Schwind, Hari Das, Terry Wagar, McGraw Hill, (Order through bookstore.uleth.ca) In addition, PowerPoint presentations will be posted on Moodle before each class for your convenience. It is my practice to post many more slides than I actually use in class. This is to help summarize the material and prepare you for the exams and assignments. Sometimes the class may want to stop for quite a while to discuss a point from one or two slides; I encourage this, and feel under no pressure to rush through too many slides. PREREQUISITES/ CO REQUISITES/EQUIVALENTS One of Management 2030, admission to the Post Diploma Bachelor of Management program, or one 2000 level course (3.0 credit hours) in Political Science AND One of Writing 1000 or a university English course (3.0 credit hours) EQUIVALENT: Management 3051/Political Science 3421 (prior to 2006/2007) MGT 3050 Y Summer

2 COURSE DESCRIPTION This course develops an awareness of the theories, practices, and legal processes that underlie the modern Employment Relationship and Human Resource Management. Students are introduced to the skills and tools needed to effectively manage people, and the rules that govern workplace relations. It is an introductory course which covers a wide range of topics in Human Resource Management. COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES By the end of the course, students should develop a good understanding of the employment relationship from both an employee and managerial perspective.they should learn about a variety of staffing related topics, including legal issues, measurement and testing, recruitment, selection, deployment, training, and career development, compensation, labour relations, occupational health and safety and other associated activities. The syllabus is your roadmap to this course. Your success and enjoyment depend on a clear understanding of assignments, grading, scoring, participation, absences and answers to any questions you may have about the course. If you are unclear about anything, please contact me right away, so you don t lose time. 2. Come prepared. Please be sure to do all the readings and assignments. Each assignment is a learning opportunity and also an opportunity to increase your final mark. 3. Lastly, please bring an open mind and willingness to participate, and I believe we will all learn a great deal and have fun! Examinations There are three examinations. The final exam is cumulative and covers all the course materials. The quiz questions are multiple choice questions. The final exam questions are multiple choice and short answer questions. The exams cover assigned readings and class lectures and the answers are based on the appropriate required textbook chapters and instructor lectures. Materials covered in class but not in the textbook may also be examined. MGT 3050 Y Summer

3 Attending class sessions is essential but not sufficient to succeed in the course. Doing the readings is essential but not sufficient to succeed in the course. To succeed in the course students must be familiar with both the material covered in the readings, as well as the material covered in the classroom. In class discussions and practices, videos, and case studies also will be the basis for exam questions. It is the student s responsibility to ensure they have all the material covered in the course in order to be adequately prepared for the exams. Also, straight memorization of material without the accompanying understanding will not result in high marks on the exams. Blackberries, Cell phones, IPods, etc. are NOT ALLOWED on the exams! Team Project (25%) Teams of four students will be formed on the first day of classes for the term. Your team will be assigned a number from one to ten and you will need to remember this number. Your team will consider itself to be a management team working in a company (you may choose any industry and create a fictional company). Your team will create a new position for your company and begin the process of conducting a job analysis and job specifications (maximum four pages) for this position. Your team will need to write up a job description for this position (maximum three pages). Your team will also need to create a recruitment posting (maximum one page) highlighting the nature of the job and the skills, knowledge, abilities and other qualities required for this position. Further, your team will need to develop a set of interview questions you will use when interviewing people for this job (maximum three pages). On May 18th, your team will be directed by your instructor on a random basis to apply for a position offered by a different team. Relating to the position you are applying for, you need to write your cover letter and resume. You MUST write your resume and cover letter and send it to the U of L career center for review. They need at least four business days to review your documents and give you the feedback. After receiving your feedback form, you need to rewrite your resume and cover letter (you should use your real resume for this part of the project; the goal is to make sure all students have a well written resume and cover letter in case they want to apply for a job in the future). Then you will hand over your cover letter and resume to the other team (maximum three pages). They will then interview you and all of your team mates (allow about 10 minutes per interview, both inside class and outside). Your instructor will also assign your team to interview the members of another team. You must keep notes of each person interviewed and later, create a four page (maximum) summary of the interviews outlining your reasons for the student you chose. In class, each team will later announce to the other team who they chose and why and give interview feedback to all members of that team. After reviewing chapters 7, you should provide a plan for training and development of your new hire (maximum two pages). This plan should explain methods and techniques to ensure effective training and development for the position. After reviewing chapters 9&10, you should complete the compensation part of the project (maximum three pages). At first you need to provide a compensation research and describe the existing typical/industry average compensation system (in Calgary or Canada) for the position of your choice. Specify the total annual pay and what portion of the total compensation for the position is fixed salary or hourly wage and what portion is varying compensation. If there is a varying compensation component, indicate what type of compensation it is (e.g., commission, profit sharing, weekly/monthly/annual bonuses, etc). Provide an estimate of the annual varying component. That is, what is the usual annual amount of the commission (in dollars, as opposed to percentages), bonuses, profit shares, etc. Make sure that you indicate the source of your data (suggestions: and the like). You also need to list the existing typical/industry average (in Calgary) indirect MGT 3050 Y Summer

4 compensation components (e.g., perks, benefits, vacation days, employee services, pieces of art on the company campus or in administrative offices, etc.) for the position. Estimate (guess) the cost of each of the indirect compensation components to the employer. After gathering this information, describe your proposed direct and indirect compensation components for the position (maximum one page). Your proposed compensation should do the best job of (1) attracting most talented employees, (2) ensuring their retention, (3) encouraging performance and ensuring attainment of organizational goals through attainment of individual goals, (4) improving satisfaction, (5) motivating intra and inter departmental cooperation, (6) providing a clear link between performance and compensation, and finally (7) it should be economically feasible. Each team will then write a short report (maximum seven pages) identifying what they did right and what they did wrong in the different steps of the hiring process, what they learned, and how they could improve upon this process next time. You will then hand all of the above in for marking. In total, your team will need to hand in the following: job analysis/specifications + job description/specifications + recruitment posting + interview questions + the cover letters and resumes of the other team done as an appendix (depending upon the size of the team you interview, this could be 15 to 18 pages of letters and resumes i.e. five or six people) + interview summary + compensation report+ training report + final report = approximately pages in total. Please note the following regarding grades and firing non contributors: Group members will complete peer evaluations, which will be used to adjust individual scores on the group project as appropriate. In the event that a group member s contribution and performance is unacceptably poor, and if group members documented attempts to resolve the issue are unsuccessful, group members will have the right, with my consent, to fire a group member who is not carrying his or her weight to the satisfaction of the group members. In order to fire a group member, you must first contact me to advise me of the problems and the steps you have taken to resolve the problem. In addition, you must advise your fired group member no later than one week BEFORE the project is due (please send a confirmation of our discussion to the fired individual with a copy to me). Late assignments In fairness to students who complete work on time, works submitted after the due date will not be accepted. In case of notifying a legitimate reason for lateness prior to the due date, penalties for lateness will be incurred. 5 COURSE POLICIES 1. Prerequisites. It is the responsibility of students to check the prerequisites for courses before registration. If students are found to be registered in a course for which they do not have the prerequisites, and they have not received prior permission from the appropriate program chair, they can be de registered. If this occurs after the drop/add date, tuition will not be refunded. 2. Examinations. Alternative arrangements for writing a missed exam may be made at the discretion of the instructor. Deferrals may only be granted in extenuating circumstances such as extreme illness or other serious circumstances beyond the student s control. Work commitments, holidays or traffic are not considered legitimate reasons for missing an exam. Students who fail to write final exams must provide satisfactory evidence of illness or extenuating circumstances AND must have the approval of the Dean for a makeup exam. For missed exams, a grade of F (0 marks) will be given. Deferred final exams can only be written at times set by the school and instructor. Please note that if a final exam deferral is granted, the date will be set by the instructor and department. Students who fail to write final exams must provide satisfactory evidence of illness or extenuating circumstances AND must have the approval of the Dean for a makeup exam. For missed exams, a grade of F (0 marks) will be given. 3. Exam policies: For security reasons, students may not leave the examination site during the first thirty (30) minutes nor enter after the first thirty (30) minutes. Data or internet enabled phones (i.e. Blackberry, I Phone etc.), laptops or other electronic devices may not be used during examinations without prior approval of the instructor. Students, who are found to have an electronic device on their person or desk during an examination, could be in breach of the electronic devices policy, which could result in a 0 grade on the exam. Please see additional examination policies in the 2012/2013 University Calendar, page Academic Dishonesty. In cases of academic misconduct, you will receive an F on the assignment and/or you will receive an F in the course. Students can find further information in the Calendar. Ethical Conduct: The University s policies are described in the calendar and all students are expected to read and comply with them. Special care should be taken to understand and avoid the Academic Offenses of Plagiarism and Cheating listed in the Student Discipline Policy. Students will respect the basic standards of intellectual integrity, including, but not limited to, refraining from plagiarism, cheating or copying someone else s work. In addition, students are expected to take an active role in encouraging other members of the academic community to refrain from academic dishonesty, and are asked to advise the instructor if they are aware of any such violations. This provision applies to any work submitted as a group project. Plagiarism: to steal and pass off the ideas and words of another as one s own (Webster s). Plagiarism will not be tolerated and will automatically result in a zero grade for the submission. Any student caught plagiarizing may also be subject to additional University sanctions. For the current university policy on Cheating and Plagiarism, please consult University of Lethbridge calendar. The University of Lethbridge subscribes to a plagiarism detection service. Students may be required to submit their written work in electronic form for plagiarism checking. MGT 3050 Y Summer

6 CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS ATTENDANCE & PARTICIPATION Class attendance and participation in class discussions is highly encouraged and is essential to succeed in the course. Information not covered in the textbooks and assigned readings may be covered in class which you will be responsible for on the quizzes and final examination. While class attendance and participation normally will not affect your final mark, outstanding participation in discussions, presentations, and simulations may be rewarded with a slight adjustment of the final course letter mark in cases when the final mark is right between letter intervals (e.g., A vs. B+). The adjustments will be made in exceptional cases only and when the mark is within 0.1 points from the next letter interval. The definition of outstanding performance is largely subjective and the decision about the grade adjustment is up to the instructor s discretion. Please note the following: I do not allow make up assignments or extra credit work in any of my courses. Every student gets the same chance one chance for each graded element of the course. Plan your time and prepare accordingly, as there is no safety net if you do poorly on an exam or an assignment. CLASS PREPARATION To optimize the use of the in class time, the material that can be easily learned by reading the textbook and assigned articles will not be covered in class. For example, term definitions, facts, and other simple material from the textbook that you can learn on your own by reading the textbook will not be generally provided in class. However, this material will be covered on the exams. Lectures will focus on the material presented in the textbook and general discussion relating to the topic(s) outlined in the lecture schedule. Students are expected to read the assigned text chapters and readings before class, and be prepared for class discussion. Important information and additional readings for MGT 3050 are posted on Moodle. Students should regularly check the Announcements section of Moodle for ongoing notices. I may not necessarily cover all of the materials in the chapter, but it is the responsibility of the student to understand the concepts presented in the textbook and lectures. If you are unsure of any of the concepts, please take the initiative to ask me during class. I welcome questions. CONTACTING ME The best way to reach me is through e mail. I normally review s first thing in the morning, and commit to responding within 24 hours of reading the , during the week. I don t consistently check on the weekend, and usually won t respond to weekend s until Monday. INTERNET & ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATION DEVICES Any surfing of the Internet during lectures that is not directly related to the class discussion is distracting and strictly forbidden. Additionally, the use of any electronic devices (e.g., cellular phones, Blackberries) for e mailing, textmessaging, etc. is strictly prohibited. Please turn OFF your phone before the beginning of each lecture.
