1 FYS Life Maps JACKSON COMMUNITY COLLEGE 1/10 through 2/23/2012 WINTER 2012 Professor: Suzanne E Kiess, CPA, MBA JCC Phone: (517) E Mail: JCC Office: Whiting 150D The goals for FYS 110, Life Maps are many and mighty, but the underlying hope for this course is that of creating an academic environment in which students will be challenged and supported in setting and achieving educational and career goals of their own. COURSE INFORMATION: JCC Catalog Description: This first year experience course equips students for transitions in education and life. Students will be actively involved in learning and integrating practical applications to promote success. Students will develop a learning portfolio and an educational plan while enhancing critical thinking and study strategies. Prerequisites: none Required Text Materials: On Course, Downing, 6th edition, ISBN: Required Text Website: Other Required Materials: notebook paper, folder, flash drive, calendar planner Class Meeting: 11:00 AM to 12:03 PM, Tuesdays and Thursdays in WA 210 Office Hours: Mon & Wed 11 AM to 3 PM and Tues & Thur 1 to 3 PM Associate Degree Outcomes: The Jackson Community College Board of Trustees has determined that all JCC graduates should develop or enhance certain essential skills while enrolled in the College. The specific skills, called Associate Degree Outcomes (ADO), which will be addressed in FYS 110 are: The ability to think critically and solve problems, ADO #7 Grasps central ideas and arguments as outlined; Analyzes and questions underlying assumptions and logic of an issue or problem; Seeks outside information and opinions as plans are weighed and determined; 1

2 Evaluates and synthesizes information gained and constructs plan to move forward. The ability to work productively with others, ADO #9 Develops ability to discuss and question his/her own oral and written communication and that of their peers; Is engaged in small and large group work, defining and assigning roles and responsibilities; Listens well, attempts to resolve group conflict and works to reach consensus; Treats the ideas, gifts and limits of others with respect. COURSE GOALS: GOAL #1: FYS 110 will assist students in identifying their goals and better equip them to achieve those goals (ADO 7: Think Critically). Class Engagements: Complete the Pre/Post On Course Self Assessment Questionnaire and reflect upon results Develop competency in understanding and applying the tools of Inner Guide, DAPPS and the Wise Choices Process Utilize a career development tool (Discover) that results in an initial articulation of a career goal In collaboration with Academic Advising, submit a Student Education Plan (SEP) GOAL #2: Students in FYS 110 will achieve their desired outcomes and experiences through greater academic achievement through utilization of specific study strategies, (ADO 7: Think critically). Class Engagements: Instructor will utilize and demonstrate active reading strategies Incorporate explicit methods and practices for time management Complete the VARK and/or the MI express specific study plans based upon those results GOAL 3: Students in FYS 110 will have increased levels of campus engagement through emphasis upon interdependence and utilization of college resources (ADO 9: Work productively with others). Class Engagements: Receive early, specific and continued instructor feedback, consultation and conversation Experience frequent opportunities for peer assessment, group projects, collaborative work or trust building exercises Introduced, as appropriate, to the Center for Student Success, TRIO, Men of Merit/Sisters of Strength, and Academic Advising 2

3 HOW DOES THIS COURSE WORK?: What to expect from the class: FYS is a freshman level course designed with the express purpose of your college success in mind. Expect to spend time in class getting to know yourself and others. Expect to spend time outside of class reading, thinking and organizing yourself through class assignments. Your work during class is just as important as your work outside of class. Both are important! What to expect from your professor: I am interested in you and your success in college and life. I enjoy teaching and working with students. You will see me twice each week for class, and I am available and on campus throughout the week. You can expect me to start class on time and return assignments promptly with feedback. You can expect an e mail response from me within 24 hours except on weekends. You can call me anytime. I like talking and working with students. What to expect from yourself: Expect to organize your routine and responsibilities so that you can arrive to class before 11:00 AM and be ready to begin on time. Expect to block time during the week to work on our assignments so that you do not miss any deadlines. Expect to engage all aspects of your life, whether family, friends or work, so that your schedule and your commitment to college is known by all those in your life. Expect to talk with your instructor, ask questions, get comfortable seeking counsel and acknowledge your own worthiness. Methods to achieve objectives: discussion, group activities, individual time to reflect, think and write, online quizzes for self awareness, weekly assignments, and cumulative work toward a portfolio and final FYS presentation Time Expectations: College coursework take time, especially a shorter course such as this one. Consider that FYS 110 is a one credit hour course. This represents 15 classroom seat hours and hours outside of class for homework and assignments. The total hours for FYS 110 would then be between hours per semester. In a 7 week format, you can then expect to budget for about 3 hours per week on homework assignments. Activities in Class: Each class session will be carefully planned to allow opportunities for learning together in groups as well as alone in reflection. Each week there will be a classroom activity collected for points. Homework: Each week you will be assigned work to complete outside of class. These assignments are designed for you to continue thinking about the topic of the week and put your ideas, plans and conclusions into place. These assignments are due at the beginning of class each week on Tuesday mornings. I will use your best 7 of 8 assignment points. FYS Final Project: You will put together a FYS Final Project due at the end of our class. We will work on the project together so that you know exactly what to include and how to put your portfolio together. This portfolio will be your personal success guide for you to use throughout your college experience and beyond. 3

4 Due Dates, Late Policy and Grading: All homework assignments are due at the beginning of class at 11:00 AM on Tuesday mornings. Late work is not accepted. If you are experiencing a genuine emergency such as a death in the family, find yourself admitted to the hospital, find yourself in jail, etc., then please contact me as soon as possible. Feeling busy and overwhelmed with college, family and life is not an emergency (although it certainly does seem like it sometimes!). You will receive feedback from me on your work and progress in the class every week. Academic Honesty: The JCC Catalog states, Academic honesty is expected of all students. It is the ethical behavior that includes producing their own work and not representing others work as their own, either by plagiarism, by cheating or by helping others to do so faculty members who suspect a student of academic dishonesty may penalize the student by taking appropriate action up to and including assigning a failing grade for the paper, project, report, exam or the course itself. Instructors should document instances of academic dishonesty in writing to the Academic Dean. Please ask questions and get help early with any concerns you may have including computer problems. Keeping vs. Selling back your textbook: Give this some thought and act accordingly. Strategy #1: Really use your book, write all over it and keep it. Strategy #2: Use it very carefully, don t write in it anywhere, don t rip out any pages, and sell it back. Provide (1) the date of your SEP appointment, and (2) the name of advisor who will be working with you. 3) Results from the Self Assessment on pages 6 8 also available at If you complete this self assessment quiz on paper in the book, make sure to summarize all of your work on page 9. Prepare a written summary of all of your results. 4) Half page of writing describing your results from the Self Assessment. Do you agree with the results? Where are you strong? And, where can you improve? How does this impact your decision to be successful in college? 5) Find your own motivational video such as the 212 video. Provide (1) the title of the video, (2) describe your search in finding the video and (3) describe the video in a few sentences. 6

10 FYS Tues Thur WA Room 210 Week 4 Assignment (ediscover) due Tues 9/27/2011 at 11:00 AM 1) Get started with ediscover, register, login, secure your access slip of paper, User ID and password, click around and explore the website 2) Find the purple Inventories section and complete all 3 inventories: Interest Inventory Abilities Inventory Values Inventory 3) Also in the purple Inventory section, click on Inventories Summary, print off this 2 page report to verify your work in ediscover and bring to class 4) Write a 1/2 page reflection about your work in ediscover. What did you learn about yourself? Name 3 careers that interest you and seem to fit with your ediscover results. What would you like to do next in ediscover? Note: if you need any help with ediscover, you can contact me and you can also get with the staff at the JCC Center for Student Success (CSS). Many of the CSS staff are experts with ediscover! 10

11 FYS Tues Thur WA Room 210 Week 5 Assignment (Self Motivation & DAPPS) due Tues 10/3/2011 at 11:00 AM 1) Journal Entry #9, PP 76 77, Life Roles & Life Plan, 2 4 pages required, think of 4 life roles that apply to you, prepare a life plan for all 4 life roles 2) Journal Entry #11, PG 89, Affirmations, 1 2 pages required, complete the assignment as written in the book AND prepare 5 affirmation cards 3) Write up your experience with the JCC Student Service Center about your SEP. Keep your appointment, complete your plan and write a 1 page reflection describing your SEP and what happened at your advising appointment. Please include the following: #1 Date of appointment #2 Name of advisor who worked with you #3 Summary of the appointment and your SEP 11

Consider these ideas, consider what you do now when you study, and also think of who you are and how you work best. Prepare a 1 page plan for yourself addressing the same 3 sections in this piece of reading: #1 What do you need to do before organizing study materials? #2 What do you need to do while organizing study materials? #3 What do you need to do after organizing study materials? 3) Decide on 3 different career possibilities for you. Go back through your ediscover results and website. Take time to think through who you are and your dreams. Make sure these are 3 different careers and not 3 variations on the same type of career. Prepare a list of your 3 career possibilities. 12

You will present your Final Project in PowerPoint to the class on either MON 10/18/2011 or WED 10/20/2011. Plan to present for 10 minutes. You must include the following 14 slides: 1. Title Page including: Presentation Title, Name, and FYS Your Personal Values including: What is important to you, Your Dream(s) and Your Video 3. Your VARK learning styles in order or priority for you 4. Your 4 Letter Personality type with explanations of what fits for you for each letter assessment 5. Your ediscover results for the Abilities, Interests, and Values Inventories 6. Your 3 Careers summary page 7. Career #1 including: Education required, Courses required, and Skills required 8. Career #2 including: Education required, Courses required, and Skills required 9. Career #3 including: Education required, Courses required, and Skills required 10. Your ediscover reflection: What did you learned from doing the ediscover Program? 11. Your Action Plan: identify 3 specific steps you will take to achieve your goals 12. Your Education Plan for the next 3 semesters 13

Your Final Thoughts: What did you learn from working on the FYS Final Project Tips for PowerPoint presentations: don t include too much text; provide mostly main ideas don t read your slides; highlight the main points and embellish with examples and anecdotes, talk and tell your story stand and talk; don t sit down; don t move the mouse around while you re talking spelling and punctuation count; present material professionally, edit everything layout counts; make it look good speak clearly; don t mumble; you should run through your presentation a few times; don t wing it, practice in front of a mirror or in front of friends 3 times minimum speak to your audience of friends, don t talk to the screen, talk to us There are two sample FYS Final Project PowerPoint files available in JetNet for our class.
