Key concepts to be covered will include ticket sales, crowd control, security, customer satisfaction, human resources management, revenue generation, marketing and sponsorship. Required Text Managing Sport Facilities 2 nd Edition Author: Gil Fried Publisher: Human Kinetics ISBN-13: Street & Smith s Sports Business Journal 12 Week Option for the Journal (not the Daily Option). From time to time, additions, revisions, and updates may be posted. The professor reserves the right to change reading assignments, assign additional reading material, assign research projects, and/or change the overall structure of the course. The professor will notify you in advance before changes are made. Be prepared for each class. If you are not prepared for each class, the professor reserves the right to penalize a student s course grade. Additionally, the professor may ask an unprepared student to leave class when not prepared to participate.

2 Examination and Grading This course will have two exams during the semester and a final exam. There will be three special projects during the semester. The special projects will be completed on the students own time during the semester and turned in as assigned. The course grade in total will be broken down as follows: Grading Component Percentage Two Mid-Term Exams (15% Each) 30% Final Exam 20% Three Special Projects (10% Each) 30% Class Participation 5% Quizzes/Class Projects 15% TOTAL 100% Examinations The examinations will consist of questions with multiple-choice and short answers, and come from the materials covered in class or reading assignments. Class Participation/Special Projects Students are expected to read the assigned material, attend class and participate in the class exercises and discussions. For the special projects, students are expected to complete the project as assigned and turn in the project by the due date. Extra Credit Students can earn extra credit throughout the semester by volunteering at local events. Each event is worth two points added to the final grade. A maximum of six extra credit points can be earned. Students must have prior approval from the professor and provide proof of volunteering for these events. Final Grades Final grades will be assigned based on the scale to the right. Grades for the class may be curved to scale to be more lenient, depending upon the final grade distribution, though this will be done at the sole discretion of the instructor. APSM Grade Scale: = A = A = B = B = B = C = C = C = D = D = D- Below 60 = F Class Schedule The course syllabus is intended to provide students with basic information concerning the course. The syllabus can be viewed as a blueprint for the course; changes in the syllabus can be made and students will be informed of any substantive changes concerning examinations, the grading or attendance policies and changes in project assignments. Any changes made hereto are made at the sole discretion of the professor.

Students whose absences exceed 25% of the scheduled class meetings of this class will receive no credit for the class. If a student has an extenuating circumstance that requires the student to miss class, then he or she shall communicate the extenuating circumstance to the professor in writing on or before the date of the absence. For any missed classes, including excused absences, students are required to write a minimum one-page summary of the lecture or class exercise missed. The summary is to be completed within one week of returning to class following the absence. A counted/official absence will be accrued only for those classes missed without subsequent completion of the summary report. Deductions of points toward the overall grade from official/counted absences will occur in the following rubric: 0-1 absences: 0 points lost; 2 absences: 5 points lost; >2 absences: 10 points lost. Quality of Work All written work must be typed (unless otherwise instructed) and must meet the high quality standards expected of an outstanding student and future professional. Requests for Help with Assignments Students should feel free to talk to the instructor or teaching assistant, or the instructor about any assignment; however, the student should always make an effort to begin the

Requests for Grades of Incomplete Consult the University Catalog for policies regarding grades of Incomplete Disability Accommodations Disability Accommodations: Students needing academic accommodations for a disability must first be registered with Disability Accommodations & Success Strategies (DASS) to verify the disability and to establish eligibility for accommodations. Students may call or visit to begin the process. Once registered, students should then schedule an appointment with the professor to make appropriate arrangements. Religious Observance Religiously observant students wishing to be absent on holidays that require missing class should notify their professors in writing at the beginning of the semester, and should discuss with them, in advance, acceptable ways of making up any work missed because of the absence (See University Policy No. 1.9). Excused Absences for University Extracurricular Activities Students participating in an officially sanctioned, scheduled University extracurricular activity will be given the opportunity to make up class assignments or other graded assignments missed as a result of their participation. It is the responsibility of the student to make arrangements with the instructor prior to any missed scheduled examination or other missed assignment for making up the work (University Undergraduate Catalogue). Professionalism & Participation 100% punctual attendance is expected. Students are expected to be prepared for class and to conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times. Students are responsible for checking SMU on a daily basis and Blackboard on a regular basis for notices from the university or from instructors. Unless otherwise notified, laptops are not allowed in the classroom during class sessions. All smartphones, ipads, etc., must be stored away during class. Students are expected to check Blackboard on a daily basis and complete assigned readings prior to the corresponding class lecture. Students will engage in class discussion throughout the semester; all students are expected to attend class and actively participate in class. At the beginning of each class session, two students will be randomly chosen to provide a brief summary of a newsworthy item/article from the world of sports marketing. All students should be prepared to answer questions from the professor regarding the particular deal/issue/news. Throughout the semester, each student will be called upon in this manner on at least one occasion. The ability to respond professionally with interesting material will improve your professionalism and participation grade. Re-grade Policy Students wishing to have the credit awarded on an assignment or evaluation reconsidered, have the option to do so. Re-grade requests must be made within one class period of the return of the

6 test or assignment to the student. The full assignment or test will be re-graded and results, either positive or negative will be binding. Requests not made within one class of student receipt will not be considered.
