1 Online Course Syllabus CS406/BA406 Managing Web Technologies Important Notes: This document provides an overview of expectations for this online course and is subject to change prior to the term start. Course Description Prerequisites Course Outcomes Student Responsibilities Course Outline Required Course Materials Grading Criteria Assignments Course Description This course introduces the web development process and client side programming using Java scripts, HTTP, CGI and Perl. Provides the concepts of developing interactive web sites. Covers web security and e-commerce. Prerequisites In order to successfully participate in this course, students are expected to have a working knowledge of the following topics and proficiency in the following skills: Working knowledge of the Windows operating system and 40 hours of hands-on experience using a personal computer. Specific areas include: disk formatting, word processing/editing, and file creation, maintenance, and printing. Working knowledge of Internet browsers such as Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator. CN457 The Internet, or basic knowledge of the web and HTML.

2 Course Outcomes Upon completion of this course students will be able to: 1. Discuss the evolution of web site design 2. List the members of a web development team and discuss each member's function 3. List the steps necessary to develop a successful web strategy 4. Explain the function and operation of e-commerce systems 5. Understand the languages and systems used to build sophisticated web sites 6. List the languages used for client-side programming of a web site 7. List the languages used for server-side programming of a web site 8. Discuss strategies used for providing various degrees of web security Note: 1 Unit per week, the book contains 8 units Student Responsibilities Students must take a great deal of responsibility for their own learning outcomes in an online course. Students are expected to actively participate in online discussions and complete all assignments on time. Your participation in online course discussions is a graded component of this course (see Grading Criteria). Students should expect a minimum of 15 hours per week of study, homework assignments, and/or projects. If you are not willing or able to spend the necessary time, please reconsider whether this is the correct time to take this class. Course Outline All course assignments and online reading materials are presented in Week by Week. Outcomes and Reading Assignments Lists expected learning outcomes and the reading assignment for each week. WestNet Web Site. To use the WestNet Web Site, click the link under the WestNet logo. The WestNet web site offers different tools, in addition to those provided on the course site, to help you learn the course materials. Activities completed on the WestNet web site are for self-assessment only. They are not graded components in the course. Some of the features available on the WestNet web site:

3 Audio overviews and summaries. Animations of concepts found in the textbook. Quizzes at the end of each lesson. These are not a graded component in the course. They offer you an opportunity to assess how well you understand the weekly reading assignment. Glossary of terms Activities Describes three activities, which apply the concepts from the weekly reading assignment that you must complete and post to the Discussion Forum. Case Studies Describes the week's case study, to be completed once the reading and activities are completed. Answers are ed to the Facilitator. Graded Quizzes Links to the graded online quiz that tests your understanding of the week's information. Do not confuse graded quizzes with the quiz questions offered on the WestNet web site. They are not the same questions. The graded quizzes for CS406 are found on the course site. They are not provided on the WestNet course site. The facilitator will make the quizzes available online for you to take by Wednesday of each week. You may only take each quiz once and your grade will be immediately available to you. Course Deadlines This course is organized around an eight-week program. An online week correlates to a 7- day work week, beginning on Sunday. Week One begins on the first day of the term, which is always Monday. Weekly assignments that you must work on and complete: 1. Reading - Prior to the start of each week, before Monday, complete that textbook reading assignment found in Outcomes and Reading Assignment, listed in the Week by Week Table of Contents. 2. Activities - Answer the activity questions found in Activities and post your answers on the Discussion Forum by Saturday at midnight. 3. Case Studies - Complete the Case Study and your solution to the Facilitator by

5 Sunday at midnight. 4. Quizzes - Review the Self-Assessment Questions and take the Quiz by Sunday at midnight.
