1 Eastern York School District Knights News May 2014 To July 2014 SAFE SCHOOLS INITIATIVE TARGETED GRANT Early this year, the Pennsylvania Department of Education notified Eastern York School District its submission for $25,000 from the Safe Schools Initiative Targeted Grant was being approved. A team from EYSD submitted the grant application in December asking for funds to improve the district s preparedness and response to emergencies. Having been awarded the funds, Eastern York School District plans to use it for professional development, improving district-wide safety and security plans, purchase of communication equipment, and development of drills and exercises to test and evaluate its plans. In order to ensure a safe and secure environment, professional development and participation in emergency response training and exercises are necessary components of a good safety program. Training administrative, professional, and support staff employees develops a common understanding that encompasses emergency response methodologies, procedures, and plans so that they can respond quickly in the event of an emergency. Funds from the Safe Schools Initiative Targeted Grant will cover in-house and on-line training for administrative, professional, and support staff employees on topics such as incident management, parent-child reunification, crisis response and recovery, and managing the aftermath of a tragedy. Another goal of the grant is improving the district s response capabilities in the event of an emergency. Funding from the Safe Schools Initiative Targeted Grant will allow the purchase of additional radio communication equipment and the development of emergency management GO kits. The additional radio equipment will expand the district s current radio network capability and provide an alternate method to communicate with all the district buildings and key personnel. Emergency GO kits will support remote operations of an incident command team or family reunification center. These kits can be rapidly deployed and provide the essential supplies and material necessary to support an incident command team or family reunification center in a remote location. There are many stakeholders when an emergency happens. Working together in an emergency is critical to a smooth and rapid response. It is the district's intention to include local law enforcement, fire companies, and emergency management agencies in planning, drills, and exercises. By including these agencies in the planning, drills, and exercises, it will improve their familiarity with district staff, district plans, and district facilities. When all stakeholders are enrolled in providing a safe and secure environment and have a thorough understanding of their roles and responsibilities, the district will benefit by having a safe and secure environment where all students and staff learn and prosper. The district was fortunate to be awarded funding from the Safe Schools Initiative Targeted Grant. In addition to the $25,000 awarded under the Safe Schools Initiative Targeted Grant, the district has received over $23,000 in ACT 147 funds over the past 5 years. These funds have been used to purchase communication equipment and emergency supplies for classrooms. The Eastern York School District is committed to protecting the safety and health of our students, staff, and those who participate in the functions of the district. To support this commitment, the administrative, professional, and support staff employees will continually look for ways to gain additional funding for safety through grant opportunities. WRIGHTSVILLE JUMP ROPE FOR HEART In February, Wrightsville Elementary participated in Jump Rope for Heart. This event was held to help benefit the American Heart Association (AHA). The AHA raises money to help fight some of the leading causes of death in the United States such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes. Each grade jumped rope for about 60 minutes. The students and staff did a tremendous job this year. We doubled our previous amount raised and had well over 50% of the school participate in raising money for the AHA. We are proud to say Wrightsville students and staff raised a total of $7, Jacob Montgomery, 2 nd grade, was the top fundraiser and raised $ AWESOME JOB WRIGHTSVILLE!!! Next year Kreutz Creek and Canadochly will have the opportunity to participate.

2 STEM Summit held March 13, 2014 at Eastern York High School The High School held a day long STEM program for all 9th graders. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics. Junior Achievement of York conducted the program with approximately 40 volunteers from local businesses who provided students with 9 activities that included hands on experiments, competitions and career information. The purpose of these activities is to show students how the concepts they are learning at Eastern relate to the real world. Tiffany is an Eastern graduate (class of 1995) who now is employed by PTI to inform high school students about education opportunities in technical fields. PTI offers two year degrees in Design, Building Trades, Hospitality and Culinary Arts, Business, Healthcare, Nursing, Criminal Justice, Energy and Electronics, and Information Technology. Students were engaged in a presentation that focused on listening skills, education opportunities, and financial aid. Several students asked questions about life on campus, financial aid, and visiting PTI. Ms. Graham brought along Lucy the Swan as the unofficial school mascot. 9 Certifiable! CPR Certifiable That Is! Did you know that statistically speaking, four out of five cardiac arrests happen at home? Our juniors are well aware of this fact and others regarding the value of early CPR. This school year over 166 juniors were taught CPR in their required Health Education class. Students were given instruction in the correct sequence of steps and proper techniques for adult, child, and infant CPR and AED usage. They were also given the opportunity to learn how to respond during a choking emergency. The Senior High School Health Education Teachers, through the American Heart Association, have current Healthcare Provider and Heartsaver Instructor Certifications which allow them to certify their students. This practice has been in effect for the past eight years. Upon successful completion of the course, juniors have been awarded certification in Heartsaver CPR and AED for two years. Congratulations Juniors! Dillon Snell Alexander Emenheiser Sean McMaster
