1 Spanish Grammar II Tierra Encantada Charter School Mr. Arruga Contact Number: (505) Course Description/Objectives / Descripcion del curso / Objetivos: La asignatura de Gramatica espanola pretende ser una revision y ampliacion de los contenidos tratados en los dos cursos antetiores: Fundamentos II y II. Esta continuacion y ampliacion, sin embargo, se realizara abundadando especialmente en los aspectos comunicativos del lenguaje, pues el Dpto. de Espanol ha constatado que los alumnos tienen un buen conocimiento pasivo pero que no son tan competentes comunicativamente. Para ello, este Syllabus se vertebrara en torno a las funciones comunicativas, siendo el objetivo obtener los conocimientos que se corresponden en el Marco Comun Europeo de las Lenguas con un nivel de A2/B1. Mas concretamente, se seguira el contenido del Programa Curricular del Instituto Cervantes para los niveles referidos: Para mas informacion sobre la organizacion del departamento de Espanol se puede consultar el document: Spanish Department Program Guide, en la web de la profesora Patricia Chillon: chillon- garcia/ Assignments: Together with a variety of class works, papers, posters, essays and others, we will engage in a variety of assignments, in and out of the classroom. Some assignments will be based solely in the Spanish Grammar class, while others will be coordinated with the Learning Expedition. Projects/Products: In Expeditionary Learning schools, students participate in project- based learning that is engaged with audiences beyond the classroom. Projects are a primary structure for in- school learning, teaching core skills and content through classroom lessons, discussions, labs and work sessions, as well as through student research and fieldwork. The products of student projects are typically modeled on real- world documents and artifacts. Products are critiqued by professionals and contribute to a real- world audience. Work that begins in the classes devoted to the Expedition will be continued, refined and revised in Spanish Grammar II.

2 Materials: Students are required to have the following materials with them every day: A Spanish Grammar II notebook. A multi- subject or binder to keep photocopies, maps, etc. Pens, markers, color pencils, scissors, glue and tape. Portfolio Every year at Tierra Encantada Charter School students will prepare a portfolio that contains their academic work for the year. The portfolio will be managed in the student s Crew class, but they will also have a Spanish Grammar portfolio folder where they will keep all of their work for the class. Once work is completed and graded, it can then move from the Spanish Grammar folder to the Crew portfolio. Students will then use that work to inform their student- led conferences and the end- of- year Passages portfolio. Long Term Learning Targets and Grading: As an Expeditionary Learning School, Tierra Encantada uses Learning Targets to direct our instruction and evaluate proficiency. These Long Term Learning Targets will be addressed throughout the year, with the goal that students will be able to explain their own learning. Learning targets are aligned with the New Mexico and Common Core State Standards. The Long Term Learning Targets for Spanish Grammar II are: Ø Yo puedo comunicarme en espanol oralmente en diversos contextos. Ø Yo puedo comprender el espanol hablado de distintos origenes. Ø Yo puedo leer y comprender una variedad de textos en diferentes Fuentes. Ø Yo puedo escribir una variedad de textos en espanol utilizando el proceso de escritura. Ø Yo puedo comunicarme en espanol utilizando la ortografia, puntuacion y sintaxis del espanol standar. Ø Yo puedo comunicarme en espanol utilizando el espanol academico. Grading Scale (Academics and Habits of Citizenship): Students will receive two grades each quarter in Spanish Grammar II. The first grade relates to academics and the Long Term Learning Targets. The second grade relates to Habits of Citizenship, described below. In order to pass Spanish Grammar II, you must pass both in Academics and Habits of Citizenship.

3 Academic grades indicate progress towards meeting the learning targets. On all rubrics and class assignments, students will receive a grade between 4 and I. 4 = Displays excellence in meeting learning targets 3 = Displays proficiency in meeting learning targets 2 = Developing proficiency in meeting learning targets I = Has not progressed towards proficiency in meeting learning targets For each major assessment, the teacher will develop a rubric (a grading plan) that clarifies the criteria that a student will have to meet in order to receive a 4, 3, 2 or I. When calculating a cumulative grade, the Long Term targets will be averaged. Targets may be weighted differently depending on the requirements of the class and the Expedition. The average of the Long Term Learning Target assessments will be translated into the following letter grades = A = B = C Below a 2.0 = I What specifically do these grades say about student achievement? A = Displays excellence in meeting learning targets: The A range will fall between a (on a 4.0 scale.) This is a rigorous standard and a passing grade; credit is earned B = Displays proficiency in meeting learning targets: The B range will fall between a (on a 4.0 scale.) This is a rigorous standard and a passing grade; credit is earned C = Developing proficiency in meeting learning targets: It also means the student has significant room for improvement. The C range will fall between a (on a 4.0 scale.) This is a passing grade; credit is earned. I= Has not progressed towards proficiency in meeting learning targets: An I is earned when, in the absence of extenuating circumstances (e.g., excused absences), a student does not demonstrate substantive progress towards meeting the learning targets or criteria of a given assessment. This may mean that a student has not met the majority of performance indicators or criteria for that assessment. This is not a passing grade; no credit is earned Habits of Citizenship: In addition to academic expectations, Tierra Encantada students are expected to build culture and character through their experiences with Expeditionary Learning. Tierra Encantada has a unique set of expectations to which students will be held accountable. These expectations express the vision of a productive and a courteous community. Responsibility Habits of Citizenship Related Skills Promptness & Preparation

4 Collaboration Ethical Behavior Working Well With Others Language, Respectfulness, & Attitude Habits of Citizenship will be fostered through learning expeditions and instructional practices, as well as through other activities specifically focused on community building. Students will be graded on these Habits of Citizenship as they are articulated through academic courses, Crew, intensives and any related school activities or events. Marks for Habits of Citizenship (HoC) will follow the following grading system: 4= The student engages in these HoC skills almost all the time 3= The student engages in these HoC skills most of the time 2= The student engages in many of the HoC skills, but also ignores some I= The student frequently ignores from some or all of the HoC skills Electronics Policy: As we know, we live in a world in which we are surrounded by technology. Every type of technology has its uses and its place in our society. Tierra Encantada has a liberal policy with regard to the use of personal electronics in the classroom. However, in Spanish Grammar II, you may not use cellphones without direct verbal permission from the teacher. Cellphones must remain on your person or in your bag, and not visible on the desk. With prior permission, you may use personal e- readers or tablet computers (i.e., ipads), so long as you only use such devices for tasks related to the task. You may not use cellphones, e- readers or tablets for gaming or social networking purposes at any time. At Tierra Encantada, we are fortunate to have access to a wide range of technology, both in the classroom as well as in common areas like the Computer Lab. However, when working with technology in the classroom, you must be aware that you are responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of that tech. If you intentionally or unintentionally damage or destroy the property of Tierra Encantada Charter School, you may be held financially responsible for those damages, up to an including the full cost of replacement of any device. Late Work Policy: Work that is assigned with a due date must be handed in on the specified date. Failure to do so will result in a lowering of the Habits of Citizenship grade. If the student has not handed in the late work after three class days, then there is no evidence that the student has mastered the skills related to the Learning Target.
