REPORT TO SCHOOL COMMUNITIES SPORTS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM Engaging young people through education, industry and community partnerships. Program Host Schools Sporting Partners
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Sports Education and Development Australia (SEDA) was established in 2006 as a provider of senior secondary education and training in partnership with schools. The concept was established to meet the needs of young people requiring an applied learning education focus that was set in the real world. The disengagement of young people in the senior years often results in lack of attendance, motivation and reflects a lack of direction and meaning in what they are learning. Schools and SEDA have responded to the needs of many young people through a program that engages them in their study, motivates them to challenge themselves and improves their skills. WHAT THE PROGRAM WHAT HAS ACHIEVED WE DO GROWTH SINCE INCEPTION Programs - 1 Councils - 1 Schools - 1 Participants - 18 Staff - 1 Sports Associations - 1 Venues - 1 Delivered sports programs to 5000 students -23 Councils - 16 Schools - 12 Participants Staff - 32 Sports Associations - 12 Venues Programs Delivering sports programs to 99,000 students SEDA is the first non school senior secondary provider to be registered with the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority (VRQA). The programs offered at SEDA are state-wide Sports Development Programs linking secondary and tertiary education to major sporting organizations. SEDA are currently operating programs with: Cricket Victoria AFL Victoria Football Federation Victoria Life Saving Victoria Surfing Victoria Netball Victoria Yachting Victoria Swimming Victoria Tennis Victoria
The program links closely with state schools and Victoria University in the delivery of a VCAL/VCE curriculum for students in Years 11 and 12. Students graduate with Sport and Recreation Certification at levels III and IV and can progress onto a Diploma of Sport (Development). The Sports Development Program s curriculum is broadly based to provide pathways into careers in sport and recreation, other like industries, or to articulate into higher education in areas such as human movement, marketing, teaching, sports coaching, administration and business. PROGRAM PARTNERS We would like to acknowledge the contribution all partners organizations have made to the development and implementation of the program. HOST SCHOOLS The principals and staff of all Host Schools have contributed enormously to the initial implementation and development of the program. Without the valuable contribution of these key people the program would not have achieved the results and positive outcomes that the students have and are experiencing. The Principal Committee has, and will, continue to meet regularly to strengthen the policy, guidelines and quality of the program. VICTORIA UNIVERSITY Victoria University, as the Registered Training Organisation, has made an enormous contribution to the development of program VET delivery, program management, professional development, administration and partnerships with key government organizations. The management and compliance support has assisted in developing a quality curriculum and continues to ensure a high standard of delivery. We look forward to strengthening this partnership in the future. STATE SPORTING ASSOCIATIONS The State Sporting Organisations who co-brand the program provide staff support, venue development and the students with qualifications within the Sport and Recreation industry. The sporting organizations provide the students with unparalleled access to the industry via its staff and programs. We would like to acknowledge the commitment all staff within the State Sporting Associations have demonstrated in assisting to make the program engaging, hands on and industry based. COUNCILS/SPORTING CLUBS The ongoing support the program has received from 16 local councils and numerous sporting clubs across the state has greatly assisted in the implementation and development of programs and projects locally. The council sport and recreation staff and sporting club management staff have recognized the positive impact the program, its staff and students have in the local community and have worked to ensure classroom environments are safe, engaging and are suitable to conduct normal classroom activities.
SPORTS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM MANAGEMENT STRUCTURE The structure of the program involves: 11 Host School Representatives 4 Program Managers 1 Curriculum Manager 1 Compliance Manager 23 VIT Registered Teachers 2 Welfare Coordinators 1 Program Manager (Employed by Victoria University) 6 TAFE staff (Employed by Victoria University) 4 Admin officers 1 Admin Officer (Employed by Victoria University) COMMUNICATION Parents have been involved very closely with the program mainly due to the close communication lines between themselves and the teaching staff. The dynamic between teacher and parent is very similar to that found in a primary school setting as one teacher working closely with the students the entire school year. Parents have seen great changes in the level of motivation, attendance and engagement in their child s education and a greater direction in their career focus. The program provides a range of methods of communication: Student reports are distributed to parents on a semester basis. Parent/teacher interviews operate each term of the year students are linked to the Victoria University portal and obtain information, results and curriculum via this medium Students at all venues have their own laptop (provided by the program) and have wireless access to all VCAL and Sport and Recreation curriculum online to SEDA Head Office. Each of our major programs produce 4 E-News Reports annually that are sent to parents, students, schools and all partner organisations
PROGRAM BENEFITS FOR STUDENTS Increasing engagement, attendance and motivation through an interest based program Exciting links with sport Excellent pathways into the workforce and higher education Challenging and interesting sporting curriculum Involvement in Coaching, Fitness Instruction, Exercise Science, Event Management, Sports Management, Sports Administration and career planning Practical experience linked closely to major sporting organizations and the wider community FOR SCHOOLS Assistance in the management and coaching of school sport teams Support for events and clinics in feeder primary schools linked to partner schools Assist school staff with the planning and implementation of sporting carnivals, camps and open days Deliver clinics in specialized coaching accreditation, umpiring, management and officiating Opportunities to link school events with sporting organization partners. 6 FOR PARTNER SPORTING ORGANISATIONS Sports Development Program students and staff link within partner sporting organisations to development programs to increase the interest and participation in the sport. Students and staff work closely with sporting organisation development staff to deliver sporting programs in schools and community groups. Aspects of the Sports Development Program curriculum are closely linked to the sporting organisations strategic objectives. Focus areas include coaching, event management, sports administration, sports management and marketing. The focus on sport has enabled many young people to see the benefits in linking their study and skill development with an interest area or a future career. They are working to establish a pathway for themselves through the opportunities provided by the state sporting association partners. Sports Development Program students on traineeships, as part of the applied curriculum, adopt the role of School Sport Support Officers (SSSO) to promote sport and physical education in primary and secondary schools across the state. SSSO s provide coaching, school sport coordination, physical education, support for disability programs, literacy support, social cohesion programs and assistance in school sport competitions. SEDA SSSO programs include: Major programs and events run by the sports associations Literacy and Sport Literacy/Numeracy Harmony and Sport Social Cohesion Programs Physical Activity and Nutrition Networking with Community Partners Links to Sporting Clubs/Club Development School Sport Programs Clinics School Sport Programs All Abilities School Sport Programs VSSSA/VPSSA Regional Events Coordination School Sport Programs-CALD Program School Sport Programs-Coaching/Teaching School Sport School Sport Programs-CALD/Multicultural/Social Cohesion Programs Active After School Community Programs Homework Classes Resource and Facility Management
