4 About Let Your Major Be Your Guide Firelands Musical Arts EDucation Business Administration Arts & Sciences Health & Human Services TEchnology Let Your Major Be Your Guide is updated and produced each year as a collaborative effort between the Ziggabyte technology store at the BGSU Bookstore, the Bowling Green State University academic departments, and Information Technology Services (ITS). 16 School of Art There are three sets of recommendations for the School of Art depending on your program and major. First Year Programs (FYP) and Studio Disciplines Computer Recommendations Windows-based computers are not recommended for FYP/Studio majors. Although the initial price for a comparable Mac computer may be higher, they are much better suited to the work than a PC. Follow the BGSU Recommended Minimum Specifications (p.6) when purchasing a computer. Students who want a computer with higher specifications should refer to the technology recommendations for Digital Arts and Graphic Design, as applicable. Digital Arts FYP Recommended Software Microsoft Office ilife (includes iphoto, imovie, GarageBand, iweb, and idvd) Adobe Creative Cloud Computer Recommendations The Digital Arts program strongly suggests that students wait until their sophomore year before purchasing a computer. Digital Arts majors have access to Windows and Apple-based computer labs outfitted with the latest industry-standard software available, often more powerful than students can afford. Both Macs and PCs are used in the digital arts industry. However, generally the following guidelines should be followed based on area of focus: 3D Animation: PC preferred, Mac okay Imaging, Interactive: Mac or PC Real Time 3D: PC Video/Film: Mac Digital Arts Recommended Software & Accessories Microsoft Office Adobe Creative Cloud (12 month subscription) Digital drawing tablet DSLR camera such as Canon Rebel T3i For the detailed recommendations by the Digital Arts program, visit Page 16

17 Graphic Design If a Graphic Design major wishes to consider purchasing hardware and/or software (to be used as a supplement or substitute to the open computer labs), certain minimum requirements must be met to ensure parity with the computer labs, and most importantly, to ensure that hardware and/ or software performance remains at an acceptable level for proper productivity. Computer Recommendations The BGSU School of Art Division of Graphic Design highly recommends Apple Macintosh computers and a laptop is encouraged over a desktop. Students considering a Windows-based laptop should match or exceed the Apple laptop specifications. MacBook Pro is recommended. MacBook Air is not recommended. Recommended Software & Accessories Adobe Creative Cloud A Typeface Library beyond the typefaces that come bundled with computers and software applications External Hard Drive with multiple port options * The Design Premium Collection includes: Bridge, Device Central, Illustrator, Acrobat Pro, InDesign, Photoshop Extended, Flash Catalyst, Flash Professional, Dreamweaver, and Fireworks.
