3 {PRESIDENT S MESSAGE} Between premier events, fpma STAys busy With a highly successful FPMA In Paradise, the 2012 Summer Conference recently concluded, you would think that things at FPMA are slowing down just the opposite is true! We are working hard in many areas to serve members and improve the pest management profession. Here are just a few activities in the month of September: FPMA will meet with Department of Environmental Protection and IFAS officials to discuss the delivery of Green Industries Best Management Practices. The Green Industries Advisory Committee is working with these agencies to streamline the process in advance of the January 1, 2014 training deadline for industry-gibmp certification is required prior to the Limited Fertilizer Certification from DACS as required by FPMA-supported state law. FPMA will meet with Sierra Club leadership to meet again as a follow up to the initial July 2012 meeting, where GAC Chair Bryan Cooksey, EVP Allen Fugler and I met with their Executive Committee. We hope to open an ongoing dialogue between our groups with the common goal of protecting water quality. The Bilingual Business/CEU Conference is planned for September 20th at the Ft. Lauderdale REC in Davie. It is third annual outreach to our Spanish speaking professionals, and features all 10 hours of CEU credit in dual English and Spanish sessions. Meals are sponsored by Univar and Bayer and prepared by Dr. Claude Thomas and his famous traveling BBQ pit-plan to attend the CEU day and stay for a bilingual business topic over dinner! The GHP Advisory Committee will meet to develop Request For Proposal outlines for various client groups such as hospitality, restaurants and health care. The RFP outline will call for FPMA membership as a means of ensuring professionals will deliver services to protect health and property and will be presented to associations representing those client groups. The RFPs will separate FPMA members as true professionals and will create additional business opportunities for them. It s an exciting project to build FPMA pride by building the FPMA brand! Of course, plans for the upcoming Florida Pest and Lawn Care Expo are ramping up, too. The Expo planning Committee Chairs Eric Hoffman and Herman Giraldo met recently with FPMA staff and Lisa Ashley of Fusion Communications at the brand new host hotel, the Wyndam Grand Orlando Resort Bonnet Creek to create another great event. Education Chair Claude Thomas attended the meeting to plan the entertaining CEU portion of the program with the involvement of Dr. Koehler and Dr. Baldwin of UF/IFAS. The program will feature a huge trade show (sure to sell out!), a business track of educational and a lawn care-specific track-something for everyone, from sales to technical to HR issues will be addressed. The hotel is near Disney parks, is expertly staffed and is a gorgeous property-i can t wait to share full program with members and to seeing everyone on January 21-25, 3013! George E. 4 {LEGISLATIVE UPDATE} Working behind the scenes Greetings FPMA members. Tired of answering those dinner time phone calls? Are we done with all the political surveys yet? I know that is a question that is going through our collective minds as we wrap up this year s primary season and head into a presidential election year cycle. I hope all of you have had a relaxing summer and are ready for things to pick up, from both an economical and policy-making point of view. Your Government Affairs Committee is working closely with your President, Executive Committee and Regional Directors on many behind the scenes projects that will protect your ability to continue to apply fertilizers for your lawn care customers. We have done a lot of leg work in forming a multi-industry coalition with like-minded organizations and companies to reduce our need to continually pass the hat for funding and also to enlarge the collective influence for those who produce, apply and sell fertilizer products. This group has been and will continue to meet weekly under the direction of Associated Industries of Florida, an association of divergent business interests based in Tallahassee. The coalition s sole purpose is uniting our resources and messages to change the public s perspective and the debate on fertilizer of turf, from being a contributor to water pollution to a protector of water quality when applied correctly. Pete Snyder from Florida Turf Grass Association is providing the leadership and creating a funding mechanism for various fertilizer user and producer groups to collect funds through a voluntary contribution of small percentage of each bag of fertilizer purchased. We are reviewing the results of a recent meeting of stakeholders at Massey Services in Orlando and will be discussing the plan with GAC and FPMA leadership in the weeks to come. Our goal is to have seed money raised from our membership in September for a public relations campaign and then use funds collected from fertilizer purchases to fund future projects going forward. If fully implemented, I would encourage those of you who fertilize lawns to participate in this fund because our opposition is well funded. We will need to all do a little to raise the money needed to deliver our message to the public and improve our influence over policy makers through local ordinances and in the state chambers in Tallahassee. On a different note, I wanted to express special thanks to FPMA representatives D.R. Sapp, Sean Brantley, Adam Jones, Tim Hulett and Mark Ruff for being our negotiation team with the Department on recent rule making discussions at the Apopka REC. We will continue to work with Bureau Chief Mike Page and the Department on reasonable, responsible regulation development. In local elections, the dismissal of County Commissioners McClash of Manatee, Judah in Lee, and Thaxton (term limited as a County Commission and running for Superintendent of Elections) in Sarasota reflect a repudiation of activist and intrusive government in Southwest Florida. We have all worked hard to { } We have done a lot of leg work in forming a multi-industry coalition with like-minded organizations... push back against scientifically unsupported fertilizer regulation and can take some credit for the election results in these cases. The opposition to expanding, unnecessary government regulation and our efforts to present pest and lawn professionals as caring environmentalists have demonstrable results in what is the most politically contentious area of the state-a testimony to our collective efforts! Finally, Pest-PAC just finished a successful fundraising effort for Representative Jimmie Smith, our legislative champion of recent sessions. Pest-PAC supported several candidates for legislative offices the August 14th primaries and one of the candidates we supported, our industry s own Katie Edwards of the Dead Bug Edwards family, was successful in Round One. Please stay posted for Round Two, the general elections in November... 9 industry news Dr. Koehler of UF featured in Answer Man Column Dr. Koehler of UF was recently featured in Answer Man column of Orlando Magazine, under the heading A Nose for Bugs: Q: Can dogs really detect termites and bedbugs? A: Canines are literally superhuman when it comes to sniffing out the insects. Phil Koehler, a professor of entomology at the University of Florida, tested some highly trained dogs a decade ago and found that they were right 90 percent of the time when indicating live termites. More recent tests using bedbugs produced a stunning 98 percent accuracy rate, Koehler says. Humans stink by comparison, mustering only 35 to 40 percent on the detection meter. Ken recently resigned from Aaron Pest Services of Jacksonville to devote his life to the ministry full time. Ken said the inspiration for the Wear Gloves ministry is Matthew 9:37: the harvest is plentiful and the workers are few, so hard work is necessary for those called to serve. Wear Gloves works with food pantries, clothing distribution, interfaith kitchens, international missions, child care facilities, nursing homes and with local groups to better serve the homeless and their communities. It s not just a donation. It s an investment in a child s future, is a defining statement of Big Brothers Big Sisters and Larue Pest Management shares this vision of investing in children. Recently, the company sent Big Brothers Big sisters of the Suncoast a check of $900, for the 1st quarter of A donation to Big Brothers Big Sisters impacts a child s life and makes us part of something bigger, said Keith Ruebeling, president of Larue Pest Management and FPMA treasurer. We realize the importance of giving back and that is why we donate $10 for every property we are hired to service. Our customers know, not only will they receive professional service, but that part of their purchase is going to help someone in the community. Each year the Society raises funds to support cancer research, education, advocacy, and service. For the 1st quarter of 2012, Larue Pest Management wrote a check of $900, to help in the fight against cancer. PCT Reports: Hulett Discovers, UF Confirms West Indian Termite in Palm Beach County PCT Online reported that the University of Florida has confirmed an infestation of the West Indian subterranean termite in Loxahatche-the first one in the state outside of a single Miami neighborhood-an indication that this species is moving to the north. A Hulett Environmental Services technician found the termite infestation during an inspection. This species of subterranean termite is found in Jamaica and the Grand Cayman, and it was 1995 when it was first discovered in this country in Miami, said Rudolf H. Scheffrahn, the professor of Photo courtesy of Hulett Environental Services entomology who confirmed Hulett s findings. The termites were most likely transported to Loxahatchee a number of years ago in a potted plant from the Little Haiti neighborhood where it is common. The West Indian subterranean termites are small, brown and swarm during early summer evenings. They look similar to drywood termites, but getting rid of an infestation requires a different treatment protocol. It s easy to misidentify the West Indian subterranean for drywood termites and spend hundreds of dollars on treating the wrong species, said Tim Hulett, company President and CEO, and an entomologist. The wasted money is bad enough, but if left untreated the subterranean termites can cause extensive damage that will be much more expensive to treat and repair later on. 10 pco magazine SEPTEMBER 2012 FPMA A Non-Profit Membership Organization Established 1945
