Through interactive demonstrations led by trained education specialists, students also are introduced to concepts such as salinity, density and heat capacity, while opportunistic learning occurs as students observe dolphins, pelicans, and ocean-going ships crossing the bay. This trip is Limited to 25 participants so register soon by contacting the Medina County Extension office at Registration fee is $12 which includes transportation to Corpus Christi, water and snacks on the boat. 4 PAGE 4 FROM THE BARN 2016 MCJLS RULE CHANGES At the April 25, 2016 Medina County Junior Livestock Show Board meeting there were some rule changes made. The new rules will be handed out at all validations or can be obtained at the County Extension Office. LAMB & GOAT VALIDATION TAGS The Lamb & Goat validation tag order forms are included in this newsletter. Please complete your tag order form and return it along with your payment to the Extension office by: Monday - August 15, 2016 A prepaid tagging fee must accompany validation tag orders for all livestock. CALF SCRAMBLERS Anyone interested in participating in the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, San Antonio Livestock Exposition or the Star of Texas - Austin calf scramble need to contact the Extension office at no later than Friday, September 23rd. Participants must have reached their 12th, but not their 18th birthday on January 1, 2016 and not be enrolled beyond their junior year in high school. ATTENTION...MAJOR & COUNTY BROILER EXHIBITORS Orders for major and county shows will be due in the month of October, watch for order forms and due dates in the September newsletter. The order forms will also be available online or at the Extension Office. HEIFER VALIDATION PROGRAM Texas is privileged to have the largest junior breeding heifer program in the nation. However, the sheer size of Texas, diversity in counties and beef breed associations has created some challenges for effectively and fairly managing the program. Because of numerous breed divisions offered, there are inconsistencies in how breed associations record purchase and transfer information. Heifer Validation is being initiated to ensure a level playing field for all junior breeding beef heifer exhibitors and to present a unified approach to verifying breeding beef heifer registration papers, ownership and physical possession. Participating major livestock shows are requiring all junior breeding heifers to be tattooed, brands recorded and hair samples collected for the DNA Assay. All heifers must be validated by the County Validation Committee. Watch upcoming newsletters for more information and validation dates. STATE FAIR ENTRIES Exhibitors interested in showing validated cattle or swine projects at the State Fair need to enter those projects between July 15th through August 22nd during office hours at the Extension office. For more information contact: Derrick Drury at COMMERCIAL HEIFER NOMINATIONS The Junior Commercial Heifer Show and Sale was added to the Medina County Junior Livestock Show to give 4-H and FFA youth with commercial beef projects an opportunity for recognition during the stock show. Division rules can be found at: under publications Validation for this division will be held Sept. 25th at 2:00 pm. Individuals interested in entering this division must complete a commercial heifer nomination form included in this newsletter and submit a $20 nomination fee by Sept. 19th. Any prospective exhibitors are encourage to direct questions to Derrick Drury at the Extension Office. ANIMALS FOR SALE - LAMBS, GOATS, PIGS, RABBITS Breeder lists are available at the Extension Office. We also receive flyers on upcoming events. The Texas 4-H and Youth Development Opportunity Scholarship Program is conducted in coordination with the Texas 4-H and Youth Development Program, the Texas 4-H Youth Development Foundation, and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service. All applications must be submitted through the applicant s county Extension office and meet all criteria to be considered. Approximately 225 academically-competitive scholarships totaling $2.3 million were awarded in the 2016 Texas 4-H Scholarship Program ranging in amounts from $1000 to $20,000 (amount established by donor). No scholarship recipient whose award is based on this application process will receive less than $1000 (may require receiving a combination of scholarships totaling $1000). The Texas 4-H Foundation seeks to ensure that each recipient receives the highest dollar amount of scholarship for which that recipient is eligible.
