1 Course 2 - New Mexico SUN Online Instructor Certification: Designing Quality Courses Skill Up Network Cooperative for Teaching & Learning (SUN-CTL) I. Course Syllabus Fall 2013 Welcome to Course 2 of the New Mexico Skill Up Network (SUN) Online Instructor Certification Program. You should find this course to be both valuable and useful in your professional development in online education. This seven week course will be conducted completely online and is driven by your participation through asynchronous discussions and interaction with your colleagues. Participants who successfully complete this course will have met the second requirement for certification to teach online for New Mexico s SUN Online Course Sharing. II. III. Course Description This course is designed for faculty who wish to develop and teach online courses as part of New Mexico s SUN Online Course Sharing. The focus in this course is on applying best practices in distance education as we focus on developing course content, learning activities and assessments that achieve instructional objectives and are based on Quality Matters Standards. During the brief seven weeks of this class, you will be designing and developing online learning modules for a course of your choosing, and you will be reviewing a peer s learning modules. This course will be taught in the Blackboard Learn Management system (Bb LMS). While taking this class, you will gain a student s perspective of what it is like to successfully complete an online course as well as learn effective strategies for online delivery. Success in this class requires both a commitment of your time as well as your personal motivation towards learning how to expand your teaching in online delivery of instruction. Ideally, you will take what you already know about good teaching and practice and apply it to the online environment. IV. Text and Materials There is no required textbook for this course. 1

2 Course Materials Prior to getting started, you will want to review the necessary computer requirements to properly run the Blackboard Learn Management System. For best performance, it is recommended that you use Firefox as your internet browser. You can download Firefox for free at Blackboard Help The following guides will be integral to your success in utilizing Blackboard Learn during this class as well as after the class should you be using Blackboard Learn Management System in the delivery of your course. Blackboard Learn Manual: This manual will be available to you online under the Help Resources tool located under our Course Tools. You are not required to print it, but there will be times when you may need to reference this manual to find the step by step Instructions needed to complete work using the Blackboard Learn tools. Blackboard on Demand and Instructor/Student Bb Help Guides: There will also be times when you may need to reference either Bb on Demand and/or the Bb Help Guides. Access to these resources is located in our course shell listed under the Help Resources course tool. I would recommend bookmarking these pages for future reference. Create a Binder and/or a Folder on your Computer/Flash Drive Although not required, it is important that you create a binder/folder to keep yourself organized throughout the class. Set up tabs/folders for the three weeks and keep your printed/saved materials, reflections, and your other work within each week s tab/folder so that you can readily find and refer to materials as needed. V. Course Learning Outcomes (Objectives) Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to 1) Identify and utilize best practices in the design and development of an online course. 2) Demonstrate the ability to adopt and develop course content, learning activities, and assessments suitable for the online environment. 3) Develop course materials that meet quality matters standards. 4) Demonstrate the ability to utilize LMS tools for designing and teaching online. 5) Apply the Quality Matters Rubric to self-assess and peer review the content and design of course shells created in the course. VI. Instructor Communication Policy 1) s will be responded to within 24 hours Monday-Thursday and within 48 hours Friday- Saturday. 2

Feedback will be provided. VII. Course Requirements and Expectations Active Participation Weekly course participation is expected of all participants. Participants are expected to log into the course a minimum of three different days per week. The discussion board point requirements reflect this policy. Participants are required to use the Messages tool in Blackboard to communicate with the instructor and peers and to post weekly to assigned discussion forums in Blackboard Learn. This will enable us to learn and interact with each other as a community of learners. Note: If you have not shown regular participation for the first full week of the course, you may be dropped for non-participation. You should not assume, however, that you will be dropped automatically. Discussions and Blogs Discussion and Blog postings must be a complete thought and have at least three lines of text. In order to facilitate a reciprocal discussion, posts and blogs need not exceed 10 to 12 lines of text. Use references to websites or readings to support your comments whenever possible. It is important that you get your discussion and blog postings up early in the week, so others have an opportunity to read them and share their thoughts and experiences. It is also important that you participate in the discussion throughout the week. Therefore, in order to receive credit, initial discussion posts or blogs must be posted by 11:55 pm on day four of the week to ensure adequate time for responses. Responses to fellow classmates must be made by 11:55 pm on day seven of the week. In addition, to receive maximum credit, posts should be spread out over a minimum of three different days of the week and a minimum of two responses to different classmates is required. Required Readings & Resources Throughout this class, you will be provided with required reading assignments and other resources. You are expected to complete all required readings/resource assignments and to integrate what you have read into the online discussion and/or blog posts. Weekly Assignments Participants are required to submit weekly assignments by the assigned due dates. Your points and grade will be dependent on completing the weekly assignments outlined in the weekly agenda. 3

4 This course is not self-paced! Participants are required to submit weekly assignments by the assigned due dates and adhere to the active participation requirements as described above. Late Policy: There will be a 50% penalty for late assignments. Late assignments will not be accepted 2 days after the due date. That is, while logged into the course, you must post on discussion boards, submit assignments, and complete other course work as assigned. (See the requirements explained under Active Participation. ) VIII. Final Course Grades Week 1 Curriculum Design for Online Teaching and Learning 250 pts. Matters Standards 2 & 4 Week 4 Engaging and Assessing Learners Online Quality Matters Standards pts. & 5 Week 5 Course Technology in Online Learning Quality Matters Standard pts. Week 6 Course Accessibility in Online Learning Quality Matters Standard 8 and Course Peer Review 450 pts. Week 7 Revisions and Reflections 130 pts. Total Points: 2230 pts. NOTE: This is a Credit/No Credit course. Participants must receive 85% or more of the total possible points ( minimum points out of 2230 possible points) in order to successfully pass this course and complete Step 2 toward online instructor certification for New Mexico SUN Online. Ethics Statement You are all bound by the ethical guidelines established by your college. This includes policies regarding sexual and ethnic harassment, discrimination based on race, color, religion, national origin, gender, age, handicap, sexual orientation, and veteran status; academic honesty and plagiarism; and other guidelines for appropriate professional and participant behavior. Please refer to your college Academics and Dishonesty Policy. If you have questions regarding these policies, please consult with your department chair, associate dean, or dean. XI. Withdrawal Policy Participants are expected to notify the instructor via Blackboard messages and/or if they are withdrawing from the course. The final date to withdraw is Monday, September 9, XII. ADA Statement This course is hosted on Blackboard Learn 9.1, which is ADA compliant. Qualified students with special learning needs are encouraged to notify the instructor at the beginning of the class about any specific assistance that may be required to support the student s learning. It is the instructor s intent to assist qualified students with special learning needs by making course modifications that will ensure a successful learning experience for the student. Students are asked to contact the Disability Resource Center on their home campus in order for support staff to assist the instructor with course modifications.
