The field of Gerontology is the scientific study of the biological, psychological and social aspects of aging. In this class we will critically discuss many of the social problems that face the aging population in the United Sates; including, but not limited to healthcare, the role of social networks, the economics of aging and the death and dying process. In addition, we will pay special attention to the changing culture in our society regarding the roles of the elderly and attitudes toward them. Course Objectives: Understand the diversity of the older population and consider the impact of rural/urban, cultural, racial, ethnic, gender and social class differences on the quality of life Understand the basis of stereotypes of aging and their impacts Understand major substantive areas of aging such as social networks, work and retirement life, economic well-being, housing and healthcare Required Readings Quadagno, Jill Aging and the Life Course: an Introduction to Social Gerontology, 6 th edition. New York: McGraw-Hill Companies, Inc. *additional required readings will be made available to students via My Westminster Course Format: This course will consist of lecture, classroom discussions, media presentations, in-class and out-of-class activities and a final term paper/presentation. Students are expected to come to class prepared to engage in textual analysis and theoretical application. Student Requirements: How to succeed in this class: 1. Attendance Policy: Due to the sheer volume and complexity of the material in this class, regular attendance is essential for success in this course. I reserve the right to lower final grades in the case of excess absences (more than two excused or unexcused) or tardiness. You are responsible for signing an attendance sheet that will be distributed. If you miss more than 6 classes, as excused OR unexcused absences, you will not pass this class. In addition, you will NOT be allowed to make up any quizzes or other points that you miss by being late or absent. 2. Complete assigned reading and be prepared to engage in discussion/ in-class activities. Completing the assigned reading not only prepares you for discussion, but also enables you to seek clarification on topics that are not clear. While I encourage the academic expression of informed opinions during 1

2 discussion and in-class activities, I will not condone intentionally offensive or aggressive behavior towards others. Please be respectful of yourself, as well as those around you. 3. Technology Policy: This class adopts a free learning environment policy, meaning that everyone is free to learn without disruptions. Please turn off all cell phones and other electronic devices that could be distracting to others before class or simply set them to silent if you are waiting for a crucial call or text. If you need to answer the call or respond to the text message please exit the classroom to do so and return when you are finished. Socially constructing a free learning environment demonstrates your commitment to your individual academic success, your respect for the professor and your respect for your academic colleagues. 4. Take notes of the main topics covered during lectures, discussion and videos. Taking notes provides you with a study tool for quizzes and exams. 5. Complete exams, quizzes and all other assignments on time. 6. Judicious use of please be advised that I will only read and respond to my during regular work hours on weekdays. I ask that you communicate with me via only for urgent matters that cannot be addressed in person before or after the class period, or during my office hours. Course Evaluation: Evaluation in this course will be based on your performance on three exams, one writing assignment, quizzes, participation, in-class activities, a final presentation and take-home assignments. The three exams will cover all lecture material, assigned readings, Power Point presentations, as well as in-class discussions. NOTE: Some lectures will skip material that is present in the assigned readings, as well as add material that is not present in the assigned readings. Students will be held responsible for all material. Examinations: You will be assessed via three examinations given during regularly scheduled class time as indicated on the syllabus. The exams will have a mixed format, including identifications and short and longer essay questions. (Worth 55% of your final grade) Missed exams: If you foresee that you might have to miss an exam please contact me as soon as possible to make alternative arrangements. Students who miss any exams without making prior arrangements will NOT be allowed to make them up. Presentation: You will give an in-class presentation at the end of the semester. Details about this presentation will be provided within the first several weeks of the semester. (Worth 10% of your final grade) Writing Assignment: You will be assigned to write a paper to accompany your in-class presentation at the end of the semester. (Worth 10% of your final grade) Quizzes: There will be several quizzes in this course, both announced and unannounced. Quizzes hold students accountable for their assigned reading, as well as, provide an opportunity for students to display their knowledge. I reserve the right to make adjustments to the grading scale should a situation arise in which I feel that more or less quizzes are necessary for optimal learning. (Worth 10% of your final grade) Activities and Participation: Attendance, preparation and participation are necessary of all students to maximize the learning environment. Throughout the semester we will engage in several activities that encourage critical thinking and the application of concepts. (Worth 15% of your final grade) 2

3 Exams: (3) - worth 55% of final grade Writing Assignment:10% of final grade Final Presentation: 10% of final grade In-class activities/participation: 15% of final grade Quizzes:10% of final grade Grading Scale A Outstanding % A % B+ Superior 88-89% B 84-87% B % C+ Satisfactory 78-79% C 74-77% C % D+ Passing, but inferior 68-69% D 60-67% F Failure Below 60% Bonus and extra credit: The opportunity to earn bonus points or extra credit may arise throughout the course. In such a case, they will be explained by the Professor. Any extra credit opportunity will be made available to the entire class and will not be offered on an individual basis. Policies: Academic Honesty: Academic integrity is part of good character and is central to the purpose and pursuit of any academic community. It can take several forms, including, but not limited to, plagiarism, cheating, misconduct, and providing false information. Students who engage in academic dishonest face the penalties outlined in the College policy. In addition, all violations will be reported to the office of Academic Affairs. Work that you submit in this class may be submitted to Turnitin.com, a plagiarism prevention service that also provides educational information on how to practice honesty in research and the writing of papers. If you are unsure about what does and does not constitute plagiarism, please ask me. You may also find it helpful to check out Paul Hasselbee s A Primer on Plagiarism : For the purpose of this course, I expect you to do your own work unless collaboration with others is required, allowed, or encouraged for a particular assignment. I also expect you to do original work for this course. This means that you may not submit work used for another course for the purpose of fulfilling requirements in this course, unless specific arrangements are made with me and you also have the permission of the other instructor. Behaving with academic integrity also means that you put forth your fair share of effort into group 3
