4 Opus OpusOpus Melbourne University Press revolutionised by new print and distribution platform Melbourne University Press (MUP) has recently adopted OPUS Group s Integrated Print and Logistics Management (IPALM) platform. Chief operating officer Richard Tegoni says IPALM has revolutionised the way MUP does business. IPALM is an online platform that manages web orders, stock warehousing, fulfilment, POD and ebooks. For MUP, it means that all orders for its books can be fulfilled using the one system, regardless of whether they come from bookstore customers or consumers accessing the MUP website. It also means that if an MUP book is out of stock, a POD version is printed immediately and supplied to the customer, instead of the customer waiting until the publisher receives enough orders to warrant even another short print run. The third link in the distribution system is Random House Distribution, which handles MUP s warehousing. Tegoni says the IPALM system also talks directly to Random House s warehousing systems, creating the link between bookstore orders and direct consumer orders. While MUP will still do traditional offset print runs for commercial trade titles, the new systems gives the publisher the choice not to do a print run at all for niche titles or titles that the publisher is unsure of the market for; instead, copies of the title will be printed via print-on-demand when the publisher receives orders. It means we can be smarter and more cost-effective in how we market our books, says Tegoni. MUP is still in the process of adding all of its titles to the IPALM system and there may be some older titles which will not be added but Tegoni expects the publisher will eventually manage all of its books in this way. We see printon-demand as a different delivery medium for our books that is interchangeable with other mediums, says Tegoni. For example, a customer might order a book that is in stock and one that is out of stock in the same order, and now we can combine those orders. Tegoni says the new system has also improved the way MUP manages sales through its website. Previously, MUP fulfilled online orders via POD only. Now, if a title is in stock at the warehouse, that stock is used first. It s about seamless stock control, says Tegoni. It s a dynamic way of integrating distribution and selling direct.
