2 PLANNING YOUR VISIT The schools workshop programme at Games Britannia 2016 runs from Tuesday 7 th June to Thursday 9 th June in the Cantor Building at Sheffield Hallam University. Workshops are open to schools and home schoolers from anywhere in the UK and workshop places are provided FREE OF CHARGE, thanks to the kind support of our sponsors. However, please note that charges may apply if you do not attend a workshop you have booked. THE VENUE The Cantor building is sited in Sheffield City Centre, close to the train station and is within easy access of public transport by bus and by train. Please contact us for details of available parking facilities if these are required. Cantor Building 153 Arundel Street Sheffield S1 2NU RUNNING TIMES Each day of the schools workshop programme follows the following format: Registration 09:00-09:30 Videogame Assembly 09:30-10:00 Morning Workshops 10:00-12:00 Lunchtime 12:00-13:00 Afternoon Workshops 13:00-15:00 CATERING We advise that all pupils should bring a packed lunch to eat on the day. STUDENT TO TEACHER RATIOS It is the responsibility of visiting schools to ensure adequate staffing during their visit to ensure that a reasonable level of supervision is maintained, and all schools will be expected to sign a conduct agreement to this effect. DfE guidelines suggest one adult per ten to fifteen students with at least one teacher in charge. PHOTOGRAPHY Both photography and filming will be routinely taking place throughout Games Britannia Schools will be required to sign a photographic permissions form and take responsibility at the event for managing any pupils who do not have permission for photographs to be taken. DISABLED VISITORS The university is accessible to visitors who use wheelchairs, but additional provision may need to be made for each workshop so please contact us in advance to discuss your requirements. RISK ASSESSMENT and CONDUCT AGREEMENT A template risk assessment form is available to download from the GB website along with a general conduct agreement that all schools are required to sign before attending. BOOKING will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, with some restrictions on the number of places which can be booked on each workshop by a single school during the first 4 weeks of booking. 4 PlayStation 4 Programming Programming rockets on the PS4 GAMES BRITANNIA WORKSHOPS KS4 or mathematically strong KS3 groups An introduction to programming games on the PlayStation 4 with Dr. Jake Habgood, Senior Lecturer in Game Development at Sheffield Hallam University. Jake spent a decade of his career programming PlayStation games for Gremlin in Sheffield. Supported by PlayStation First, this workshop provides a rare opportunity to gain access to the world's largest PlayStation teaching facilities at Sheffield Hallam University. Session 1: 10am-12pm on Tuesday 7 th June 20 Session 2: 1-3pm on Tuesday 7 th June 20 Session 3: 10am-12pm on Wednesday 8 th June 20 Session 4: 10am-12pm on Thursday 9 th June 20 TouchDevelop Game programming in a web browser KS3 and KS4 pupils with an interest in how games are programmed Learn to use Microsoft's free TouchDevelop platform to develop games for mobile devices with David Renton of West College Scotland (Microsoft Innovative Expert Educator). TouchDevelop games can be created and tested on most devices that have an up-to-date browser, from SmartPhones to a Desktop PCs. These can be published to the Windows stores, exported as a Cordova App for ios & Android, or released as an HTML5 web app. Session 1: 10am-12pm on Thursday 9 th June 16 Session 2: 1-3pm on Thursday 9 th June 16 Note: A maximum of 8 places on each session may be booked by any one school Robotics Programming A day at the races with robots KS3 and KS4 pupils with an interest in Programming. Learn how to program small, wheeled robots to compete in robot races, with Pete Collingwood, Subject Group Leader in Software Engineering at Sheffield Hallam University. Write programs to control their movements and get a taste of what it's like to be a programmer. Work in a team and create the most efficient program to steer your robot around the track and achieve a glorious victory over your classmates. Session 1: 10am-12pm on Tuesday 7 th June 20 Session 2: 1pm-3pm on Tuesday 7 th June 20 Session 3: 10am-12pm on Wednesday 8 th June 20 Session 4: 1pm-3pm on Wednesday 8 th June 20
5 GAMES BRITANNIA WORKSHOPS Virtual Reality Enter the world of the Oculus Rift KS3 and KS4 pupils interested in technology Not suitable for students that suffer from motion sickness or headaches Get an experience of the next generation of gaming technology with this Oculus Rift workshop led by Student Ambassadors from Sheffield Hallam University, and based on research taking place within the University's research centres. Experience the heightened levels of immersion provided to games, and discover some of the potential future applications of this exciting technology in this hands-on workshop. Session 1: 10am-12pm on Tuesday 7 th June 20 Session 2: 1pm-3pm on Tuesday 7 th June 20 Session 3: 10am-12pm on Wednesday 8 th June 20 Session 4: 1-3pm on Wednesday 8 th June 20 Session 5: 10am-12pm on Thursday 9 th June 20 Session 6: 1pm-3pm on Thursday 9 th June 20 Motion Capture Your chance to really get into character! KS3 and KS4 pupils with an interest in 3D animation. Modern videogames often use motion capture to increase the realism of animated characters. This workshop will provide you with the opportunity to act out the role of your favourite videogame character in Sheffield Hallam University s own motion capture studio. See how your movements can be brought into the digital world in this exciting workshop run by Reuben Fleming, Senior Lecturer in Animation at Sheffield Hallam University. Session 1: 10am-12pm on Wednesday 8 th June 8 Session 2: 1-3pm on Wednesday 8 th June 8 Note: A maximum of 8 places may be booked by any one school for these workshops (one whole session). Portal 2 Level Design 3D game level design KS3 and KS4 pupils interested in designing levels, including puzzles, for first person 3D physics based games. This workshop will show you how to build your own maps/levels using Valve's excellent Map Editor for Portal 2. Create and try out your own Portal 2 test Chambers add companion cubes to drop through portals onto laser guided turrets, aerial faith plates to help you jump pools of poisonous gas, add in the different types of gel bouncy blue Repulsion gel, speedy orange Propulsion gel and portal making white Conversion gel. Workshop led by Andy Stratton, Senior Lecturer in Software Engineering at Sheffield Hallam University Session 1: 1pm-3pm on Wednesday 8 th June 20 Session 2: 1pm-3pm on Thursday 9 th June 20
6 GAMES BRITANNIA WORKSHOPS Minecraft Design Creating 3D Virtual Worlds KS3 pupils interested in exploring the exciting world of Minecraft! Minecraft is a world-wide phenomenon which needs little introduction, but has endless possibilities for creative use. Few are more aware of these creative possibilities than Chris Bailey, a former schoolteacher who is exploring the children s participation in collaborative virtual play as part of his PhD research. Chris runs a regular Minecraft club as part of this research, and this workshop will build upon his research findings to ensure that participants get the most out the session. Session 1: 10am-12pm on Thursday 9 th June 16 Session 2: 1pm-3pm on Thursday 9 th June 16 Unreal 4 Map Creation 3D game level design KS5 students interested in level and game design. Please note that this workshop is only for students 16 and over. This workshop will provide hands-on experience using Epic's state-of-the-art Unreal 4 game engine. Students will create "Deathmatch" levels by starting with the general design process and ending with a playable demo. This workshop is only for students who are 16 or over in line with the PEGI age rating for Unreal Tournament games. This workshop is led by Justin Lewis, Senior Lecturer in Media Arts at Sheffield Hallam University. Session 1: 10am-12pm on Tuesday 7 th June 15 Session 2: 1pm-3pm on Tuesday 7 th June 15 Note: A maximum of 8 places on each session may be booked by any one school
