1 Professional Development Workshops for Instrumental Teachers and Music Co-ordinators Wombat Woodwind & Bass is pleased to offer a one day hands-on brass and woodwind maintenance workshop to woodwind and brass instrumental teachers and instrumental music co-ordinators. The workshop addresses the nuts and bolts of maintenance and basic repairs missing from most tertiary degree courses. The day will comprise the following two sessions equivalent to five hours professional development credits : 1. School based preventative maintenance for woodwind & brass instruments (2 hours) This workshop will introduce teachers to school based maintenance techniques which will extend the life of woodwind and brass musical Instruments and minimise repair bills 2. School based minor repairs for woodwind & brass instruments (3 hours) (Excuse me, my instrument doesn t work!) This workshop allows teachers to practise the most frequent minor repairs that can otherwise render an instrument unplayable, avoiding unnecessary trips to the repairer. NOTE : BYO a problem instrument or 2 to practise on! Dates : Tuesday 27 th May, 2014 Wednesday 28 th May, 2014 Thursday 29 th May, 2014 Cost : $220 per person. (Approximately 15 participants). 2 Professional Development Workshop 1 School based preventative maintenance for Woodwind & Brass Instruments (2 hours) Workshop Objective To introduce teachers to school based maintenance techniques which can help extend the life of woodwind and brass musical Instruments and minimise repair bills. Workshop Overview Successful instrumental music programs rely on having a library of instruments in good working order and making the most of a given budget. This budget includes monies for arrangements, books, new instruments, tutor salaries, excursions, PA systems, stands, and repairs. Some of these costs are fixed or have little scope for cost reduction. However, it is possible to achieve great savings in instrument repair costs by conducting simple preventative maintenance procedures. These procedures are generally not addressed in tertiary music courses. This workshop introduces participants to procedures which will help avoid premature wear and unnecessary damage to school instruments. By following these procedures schools can substantially reduce their repair bills, extend instrument life and minimise down time for unnecessary repairs. Designed For This workshop is designed primarily for woodwind and brass instrumental teachers. Classroom teachers and music co-ordinators with no musical background on these instruments will also benefit as no playing expertise is required to carry out the maintenance procedures. Learning Outcomes At the completion of this workshop, participants will be able to Knowledgably perform, and instruct students to perform preventative maintenance on their instruments. Be aware of definite instrument maintenance dos and don ts that are often overlooked and cause serious damage. Have the knowledge to substantially reduce instrument repair expenses and keep instruments in good working order for longer periods of time. In addition, attendees leave with comprehensive written materials for music notice boards and for students and parents to reinforce preventative maintenance procedures. Workshop Duration : Two hours with a ten minute break. Number of Participants : Approximately 15 Workshop Presenter Martin Lukas is the proprietor of Wombat Woodwind & Brass. Martin holds formal qualifications in band instrument repair from WITCC Iowa USA along with degrees in Music Performance (Clarinet) and Music Education from Melbourne University. He has many years teaching experience as an instrumental teacher and band director in both the secondary and primary systems. In addition, Martin has 20 years experience repairing & maintaining instruments in both the USA and Australia.

3 Professional Development Workshop 2 School based minor repairs for woodwind & brass instruments (3 hours) Excuse me, my instrument doesn t work! Workshop Objective To provide teachers with the opportunity to practise a few of the most frequent minor repairs that can otherwise render an instrument unplayable; thus avoiding unnecessary trips to the repairer. Workshop Overview To demonstrate common problems that render an instrument unplayable or difficult to play. These problems are often minor, so armed with some prior practice and a check list, teachers will be able to perform school based repairs to solve problems and possibly avoid the expense of professional repairs. Basic repair skills are not addressed by tertiary music courses. However, these repair skills will be of ongoing benefit to all teachers responsible for the maintenance of musical instruments. Designed For The workshop is designed primarily for woodwind and brass instrumental teachers. Classroom teachers and music co-ordinators with no musical background on these instruments will also benefit from attending as no playing expertise is required to carry out these procedures. Learning Outcomes By the end of the workshop, participants will Be able to Inspect a problematic instrument and trouble shoot for the most common problems. Be familiar with basic tools. Have the skills to perform minor repairs for a permanent or emergency fix which may help avoid unnecessary trips to the repairer. Be able to assess when an instrument is beyond school based maintenance. In addition, attendees will leave with a comprehensive check list and instructions to refer to in the future.
