1 Welcome Week Programme MSc in Carbon Management, September 2015 The following events have been organised to welcome you to the School of GeoSciences. The events coloured blue are university wide events. We have selected a few that may be of interest to you. There are many more. Details of all University wide Welcome Week events can be found at: Monday 14 th September University Card Collection for New Students Main University Library, George Square - University Card Collection event. Please see the website for when is it the best time for you to collect your card Welcome to the Library Get Connected Main University Library, George Square - Come meet members of the Library Staff to learn about the range of services and resources that the Library has to offer. With staff on hand to answer questions! We re located on the Ground Floor of the University s Main Library in George Square 1 st Floor, Main University Library, George Square - For any new student looking for help with connecting to the University network. Information Services staff will be available to help you get your personal devices - laptops, phones and tablets/pads - connected to the University network. Make sure you have your University student card with you - you'll need it to get into the Library. More about getting connected on the Information Services website Useful info for New Students : Principal's Welcome Ceremony TEAM Test Assembly Hall, New College - This traditional University ceremony welcomes new students to the University community. The Welcome Ceremony is the University's official welcome address. The Principal and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Timothy O Shea, will officially welcome you to the University. You will also get the opportunity to hear from a number of student Office Bearers, including the President, and Senior members of University staff. This is a very high demand event, please arrive by 2pm to maximise your chance of gaining entry: doors open at 1.30pm and the ceremony commences at 2.15pm. There are limited seats so if the Assembly Hall has reached capacity you can still experience this inspirational event through a live stream at Lecture Room 1, New College or back in the Central area in George Square Lecture Theatre. Lect Thtr A, James Clerk Maxwell Building, King's Buildings - TEAM (Test of English at Matriculation) is used to assess whether international students would benefit from free, non-credit English language courses and materials (ELSIS). You do not need to register for these TEAM sessions, so simply attend the session that best suits your schedule. These sessions are for UG, PGT, and PGR international students with Overall IELTS scores of 6.5 or lower (or the equivalent on another English test) Student Information Point (SIP) During Welcome Week and throughout your time at the University of Edinburgh the staff at the Student Information Point are happy to help you with advice or guidance relating to your student experience. We also provide a range of documents, including but not limited to, Bank Letters, Council Tax exemption certificate, and certificates of Matriculation. Wednesday 16 th September 10: Introduction to the GeoScience Computing Environment Room 2.02 Geography Building, Drummond Street This session will explain how to access and use the student computer systems.[please be sure to bring your university username and initial password] Practical Computing Skills Room 2.02 Geography Building, Drummond Street Not Another Campus Tour! Thursday 17 h September EUSA - Join us on for a tour of Edinburgh s most ethical and sustainable places! Learn where to fix your bike, find healthy food shops and discover the best fitness spots. Our tour includes delicious FREE tasters, exclusive offers and no-nonsense advice. Tickets must be collected from Baristo at Potterrow from 9.00am on the morning of any tour you wish to go on. Please go as early as possible to avoid disappointment! Carbon Management Social Event Join us for food, drinks and a game of skittles in one of the Oldest Pubs in Scotland. A great fun opportunity to get to know your class mates better before teaching starts. Location: Meet at the ECCI reception at 3.15pm to walk/bike with the Programme Team. Alternatively go straight to the venue Sheep s Heid, The Causeway, Edinburgh, EH15 3QA Can You Escape? Can You Escape is a live room escape game: you and your team will be locked in a room and the countdown will begin! You have an hour to solve the puzzles and escape the room. Can you beat the clock? 4 The UK Graduate job market what you need to know This event is for postgraduate taught students. Come meet members of the Career Service who will discuss "What you need to know about the UK Graduate job market. Location: Careers Service, 3rd Floor, Main University Library Friday 18 th September Register with a General Practitioner (GP) All students on a full-time course of studies in Scotland are eligible for National Health Service (NHS) treatment. This includes international students and any dependants with you in the UK. The University Health Centre The University Health Centre provides comprehensive medical care for those who wish to register as patients of the practice, and who live within the practice area. The practice is located at the Richard Verney Health Centre at 6 Bristo Square. Registering during Welcome Week They will be accepting new registrations during Welcome Week (14-18th September). Times for registering each day are 09:00am- 4:00pm. Though queues may be long, it is strongly recommended that new students register that week to ensure that you can register with the Richard Verney Health Health Centre (if you live within their practice area). More information For more information about Registering with a GP including what items to bring with you when you register, please see the New Students web information: Venue: Richard Verney Health Centre, Bristo Square Getting Started at Masters Level Workshop You have to fit a lot of challenging work into one short year. This interactive workshop help you to hit the deck running by focussing on: Differences between undergraduate and postgraduate learning environment Academic expectations Managing a Masters Getting the most out of your course. Participants are encouraged to ask questions and raise issues they would like to discuss. This is a brief workshop designed to clue participants into life at masters level. It will not be an in-depth workshop on any or all topics. The IAD provides detailed workshops on these topics later in the semester. For futher information, please visit: Booking: these courses generally open for booking 2-4 weeks in advance of the shown date. Places can be booked via the IAD website ( or via MyEd Booking Channel. If you do not see a live booking link please check back nearer the course date. Cancelling: If you need to cancel your booking, please do so at the earliest opportunity and at least 3 working days before the event. Someone else may be able to take your place, but we need time to contact them. Also, although you are not charged for an event, there are costs we incur (eg photocopying) which relate directly to places reserved.

5 Postgraduate Taught Student Welcome This is the University's formal Welcome for all Postgraduate Taught students. This includes hearing from and talking to different services, networking with fellow students and hearing about the different opportunities available to you.
