1 Course Syllabus General Chemistry II Online Summer II, 2015 CHEM 1023: General Chemistry II Online Catalog Description: A continuation of CHEM 1013, online (ACTS: CHEM 1424) Type of Course: Theory Credit Hours: 3 Pre-requisite: CHEM 1013, General Chemistry I Class Times: N/A - Online Disclaimer This syllabus represents a best plan for the course, but as with most plans, it is subject to changes made necessary by time, space, personnel constraints or other factors. Adjustments to the course structure may be required throughout the semester. Instructor Information: Name: Dr. Sarah Webb sarah_webb@asun.edu is the preferred and official means of individual student-instructor communication for this class. I will answer s within 2 business days, usually sooner but this may vary depending on the week. I do not answer on the weekends. Be sure to include name, class, and section number. Required Text, References, and Materials: 1) Text: Chemistry: The Molecular Nature of Matter and Change, Silberburg, 7 h edition, McGraw- Hill, ISBN # ) Access to a computer and a RELIABLE internet connection Equipment needed for this course: 1. Computer with web browser capable of accessing the My ASUN Portal 2. Reliable internet access (broadband recommended) 3. Microsoft Office 2000 or newer for Word and PowerPoint. 2 Note about the My ASUN Portal: As a security setting, after 45 minutes of inactivity, the portal will automatically log you out. Be sure to keep that in mind as you take a quiz. If you do not change pages or activities you may be timed out that includes changing pages (not questions) during a quiz. Reporting error messages on the Portal: If during a quiz, exam, or other activity in the portal you receive an error message of any kind, please take a screen shot of the message and include it in an to your instructor as soon as possible. To take a screen shot, press the [print screen] button on your computer keyboard and then open a word document or power point document or an and right click with your mouse and select paste to insert the screen shot into whatever you have selected. Include as much information as possible in your error reporting , including the course, assignment or other activity in which the error occurred, the date and time and what web browser you were using (i.e. Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome). The first thing you should do (after capturing a screen shot of your error message, etc.,) is to log out and then log back into the Portal this often resets your configurations and eliminates the error. Identify the intermolecular forces between liquids, solids, and gases due to chemical bonding. 2. Apply the knowledge of colligative properties of solutions to application problems. Exam I Exam II 3. Discuss basic thermodynamics. Exam II 4. Demonstrate an understanding of chemical kinetics and discuss basic mechanisms of reactions. 5. Illustrate the properties of chemical equilibrium of reactions and solubility products. 6. Explain acid/base theory and apply this knowledge to acid/base equilibrium and titration problems. Purpose and Structure of this Course: The purpose of this course is to provide a broad general knowledge of inorganic chemistry at a freshman level. The structure of this course is set up to follow quizzes with exams over each 1-3 chapter(s). You are urged NOT to wait until the last minute to complete assignments. Grading Criteria and Scale: Discussions: 15 pts each (60 pts total) Essay Questions: 15 pts each (45 pts total) Quizzes: 10 pts each (100 pts total, lowest 2 dropped) Exams: 100 pts each (500 pts total) Comprehensive Final: 100 pts TOTAL POINTS POSSIBLE: 805 All quizzes and exams will be graded immediately. Discussions and essays may take up to a week to grade. The Final is COMPREHENSIVE. It is worth 100 points with 100 questions. Class Etiquette With regard to discussion posts and communication, students are expected to: 1. Clearly identify themselves and the class and section in which he/she is enrolled. 2. Make appropriate use of the subject line. 3. Use proper English, grammar, and spelling. 4. Retain a copy of the Avoid the use of emoticons 6. Do not use net abbreviations 7. Avoid the use of slang. Instructor s Late Work Policy: Assignments will be accepted after the due date has passed, but you will be assessed a 10% Late penalty! Exceptions will be made ONLY if the My ASUN Portal system is down however, disruptions due to issues with personal computers are NOT valid excuses computers are available on campus and at public libraries DO NOT wait until the last minute!
