Examples of these majors include physical education, business, humanities, social sciences, nursing and dental hygiene. In this course, students will acquire the basic knowledge in chemistry, and will apply the chemical concepts in a laboratory setting. Additionally, students will be able to understand the application of chemistry in biochemical processes. CHEM 1151L is a co-requisite for this course. Objectives: At the completion of the CHEM 1151 course, students should be familiar with the following primary topics: measurements, nomenclature, atomic bonding, states of matter, solutions, equilibria, acids, bases, and ph. 1

2 Expected Educational Results Provided by GPC for CHEM 1151 (Revised Oct. 28, 2008): Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to: 1. Use the metric units and appropriate prefixes for mass, length, volume, temperature, density, specific gravity and calories, and convert between one unit and another, including English units. 2. Describe the subatomic particle composition of an atom and interpret atomic number and mass number, including isotopes; describe the electron distribution in the orbitals of an atom. 3. Use the periodic table as a tool to predict trends in chemical behavior, such as atomic radius, ionization energy, bonding. 4. For any given atom or molecule/ionic unit: a. Predict the bond type. b. Draw the Lewis Dot structure. c. Determine the number of bonds formed by hydrogen and the row two elements. d. Determine the polarity and geometry of the molecules using VSEPR theory. e. Determine the relationship between polarity and physical properties of compounds. f. Write the formula from the name of a compound and vice versa. 5. For chemical reactions: a. Balance chemical equations. b. Solve simple stoichiometry problems. c. Identify energy changes that accompany a reaction. d. Classify types of chemical reactions. 6. Use Kinetic Molecular Theory to explain disruptive forces (kinetic energy) and cohesive forces (intermolecular forces) of molecules/particles in relation to the three states of matter, with major emphasis on the gaseous state; state the molecular properties of solids, liquids and gases, and perform calculations using the Ideal Gas Law and Dalton s Law of Partial Pressures. 7. Describe solutions and colloids in qualitative terms and perform calculations related to concentration, dilution, and colligative properties. 8. State factors affecting rates of chemical reactions, interpret energy diagrams, use collision theory to explain rates of reactions, write and interpret the equilibrium constant expression for a given chemical reaction, use Le Châtelier s Principle to predict shifts in equilibrium. 9. For acids and bases: a. Compare and contrast properties and definitions. b. Calculate ph given the hydronium ion or hydroxide ion concentration of a solution and vice 2

3 versa. c. State the role of buffers and their mechanism in maintaining ph in body fluids. d. Write the conjugate of a given acid or base, and relate acid or base strength to the strength of its conjugate. e. Calculate pk a and relate it to the strength of an acid. f. Perform calculations on an acid-base titration. 10. State the different types of radiation and describe how radiation is harmful to living tissue; describe the use of radioactive isotopes in medicine. The instructions for student registration on MasteringChemistry are given in the handout, posted on icollege. Using the provided Course ID, you must enroll in my course on MasteringChemistry during the first week of class. Online quizzes and homework assignments for this course will be given on MasteringChemistry. Attendance Policies: Attendance is mandatory! There will be NO make-up quizzes for the in-class quizzes. Students in my class are allowed to make up 1 class exam. However, this exception is made only for students who miss the exam day due to a family emergency or severe personal illness. For other class materials and assignments, including homework and online quizzes, students are still responsible for these materials during their absence. Classroom Policies: Students should respect the instructor, classmates, and the policies set by Georgia Perimeter College. For example, you should not interrupt lectures or exams. Because of the time 3

4 constraint for each lecture period, it is recommended that you ask questions during the class exercise periods and at the end of lectures. In this course, lectures and class assessments will begin on time. Therefore, students should not come to class late. During the class period, if you have an emergency, inform me before leaving the classroom. Recording devices may not be used in the classroom. However, students with documented disabilities are allowed to receive classroom accommodations. The information for the Center for Disability Services (CDS) is presented on the Georgia Perimeter College website. Additionally, students may contact CDS directly by calling (678) In this course, students who come to class prepared are more likely to perform well on class assessments. It is your responsibility to review the information in your textbook before coming to class. In the classroom, taking notes during the lectures and class exercises will help you learn the class materials. Outside of the classroom, you are expected to complete the assigned online quizzes and homework sets on Mastering Chemistry. The online assignments are designed to help you evaluate how well you understand the topics discussed in class. If you have any concerns about the class, talk to me after class. Additionally, I will be available to meet with you and answer your questions during office hours. However, if you would like me to answer your questions outside of office hours, you may me your questions, or me to schedule an appointment. Course Requirements and Grading Information: Exams: There will be 4 class exams given for this course. I will drop the lowest exam score for one of the 4 class exams. The dates for the lecture schedule and class exams are listed in the "Lecture & Test Schedule" table. All exams will be taken in class. The class exams contribute 60% of the final grade. Quizzes: Some quizzes will be in-class quizzes. In-class quizzes will be given randomly during the lecture. In addition to the in-class quizzes, some quizzes will be online quizzes. The online quizzes will be posted on the Mastering Chemistry website. You must complete and submit each online quiz by the deadline posted on Mastering Chemistry in order to receive a score for the quiz. The scores from both the in-class quizzes and online quizzes make up 10% of the final grade. Homework: All homework assignments will be posted on Mastering Chemistry. Similar to the online quizzes, you must submit each homework set by the deadline posted on Mastering Chemistry to receive a score for the homework assignment. 10% of the final grade will come from the scores for the homework assignments on Mastering Chemistry. 4

5 Final Exam: The Final Exam for this course will be cumulative, and has been prepared by the General, Organic and Biological Chemistry Committee. The final exam is structured to include all materials covered in this course. A study guide for the final exam will be provided near the end of the course to help students prepare for the exam. The date for the Final Exam is provided in the "Lecture & Test Schedule" table. The final exam score counts as 20% of the final grade. If the school is open, class will meet as regularly scheduled. If an exam is scheduled on a day that the college is 6

7 closed, students should come to the next class meeting prepared to take the exam that was scheduled for the cancelled day. ACADEMIC HONESTY POLICY - Cheating and Plagiarism Cheating includes any attempt to defraud, deceive or mislead the instructor in arriving at an honest grade assessment. Plagiarism is a form of cheating that involves presenting as one s own the ideas or work of another. All portions of any test, project or final exam submitted by you for a grade must be your own work performed without any external aid beyond that which the instructor has given explicit consent. Specific requirements will be described for collaborative projects, but in that instance all work presented must be the work of members of that group. All research materials must be properly cited. Violation of the Academic Honesty Policy will result in a grade of zero for that test, project, or exam accompanied by documentation. The second offense will result in assignment of a grade of F for the course and a formal charge of Academic Dishonesty will be lodged with the College Dean. Policies have been established by Georgia Perimeter College to insure due process in charges of cheating or plagiarism. A copy of these procedures can be found in the current Student Handbook under the heading Academic Honesty. Cheating is not only copying the work of someone else (classmate, tutor, author), but also allowing your work to be copied. Americans with Disabilities Act Statement: If you are a student who is disabled as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act and requires assistance or support services, please seek assistance through the Center for Disability Services. A CDS Counselor will coordinate those services. Withdrawal Policy: A grade of W will be assigned if the student officially withdraws by midpoint. After midpoint, withdrawal will result in an F grade unless a hardship withdrawal is granted by the Campus Academic Dean. It is the student s full responsibility to withdraw through the Office of Enrollment and Registration Services if the need arises. Withdrawal from CHEM 1151 lecture automatically requires 7

8 withdrawal from CHEM 1151 laboratory, and likewise a withdrawal from lab will result in withdrawal from lecture. Grade of Incomplete : An incomplete ( I grade) is available only in the event that the course has been essentially completed. If the student misses the final exam due to injury, illness or other special circumstances, he/she may request an I grade. Documentation will be required confirming the illness or difficulty. The I grade must be made up within one semester or the I grade automatically reverts to an F. Note that the student may receive an I grade only if he/she is passing the course. Multiple Campuses Statement: Students taking lecture and lab at different campuses should be aware that, while the content is the same, the order of topics may be different. Students are responsible for covering the material as required by each instructor. Drop for Non-Attendance: Students who never attend a class (or never log-in for a distance learning class) by one week after the end of drop add will be reported for non-attendance. Students who do not drop a class during the schedule adjustment period and are reported for non-attendance will be automatically dropped from the course. Neither the course(s) nor any grade(s) will appear on the student s permanent record. Students reported for non-attendance in a required Learning Support, English as a Second Language, or Regent s Test Preparation course will be withdrawn from all collegiate level (1000 or 2000-level) courses in which that student is concurrently enrolled. Students dropped from a lecture with a co-requisite lab will be withdrawn from the lab and given a grade of W. Regent's Test Statement: Students are required to take the Regent's test. Each student has two attempts to pass this test before he or she accumulates 45 hours of collegiate credit. After two attempts, or after reaching 45 hours, a student will be required to take classes to prepare for the test. These classes are three credit hours each. (The test is free; the courses require tuition payment.) After accumulating 54 or more credit hours, a student may not take any collegiate level courses until he or she completes the preparation classes and passes the Regent's test. Students should sign up for the test when enrolled in or immediately following the completion of ENGL 1102 and prior to accumulating 45 credit hours. Learning and Tutoring Center: The Learning and Tutoring Center (LTC) offers free individual tutoring on a drop-in basis. Tutoring is available in a wide variety of collegiate courses as well as in learning Support courses. Professional, degreed personnel conduct tutoring. Lab Waiver Policy: Students with special medical conditions (pregnancy, nursing, immune deficiencies, etc.) who have documentation from their (licensed) physician may request a waiver of lab until a later date. Students must present this documentation to the department chair at the time of the request. 8
