6 A history of voice communications at XO (1/2) XO founded as a CLEC in 1994 by Craig McCaw. XO began serving its initial business customers in 1996 with TDM-based telephony services. Metro fiber + SONET transport to ILEC LSOs National Nortel DMS 500 deployment Local and E911 organically; TF and LD initially via resale XO became an ISP in 1999, and launched a 10G/OC- 192 national IP/MPLS network + OC-192 intercity private line network in 2001 Sonus softswitch deployed in PRI offload and LD trunking between DMS switches VoIP-based wholesale LD termination first exposure of VoIP services to customers Integrated Access first launched in 2001 based on TDM multiplexing Copyright XO Communications, LLC. 7 A history of voice communications at XO(2/2) 2005 saw the launch of VoIP-based services to Enterprise customers and the introduction of IP-based Integrated Access. Broadsoft feature server platform introduced to support Enterprise VoIP products. XO has since launched a succession of Enterprisefocused VoIP services. All voice development and network expansion and evolution is VoIP based with SIP-signaled sessions. XO continues to operate 50 circuit switches (DMS 500 and 5ESS), and will for some time to come. XO has capped all circuit-switched services except for PRIs and is harvesting business line customer base. XO had dismantled our FGD trunking network. Copyright XO Communications, LLC. 8 The XO VoIP Services (1/2) XO offers a complete range of VoIP-based telephony services for Enterprise Users. Wholesale Voice services deprecated. Thin margins and non-sticky customers VoIP wholesale services peaked at 3B MOU per month DiffServ based integrated access from DS1 to 10GE for all services is the fundamental idea. Public and private IP-based connectivity, a complete set of VoIP-based telephony services, and Cloud-based security, compute and storage offerings, all on a single IP attachment circuit. 9 The XO VoIP Services (2/2) XO s Enterprise VoIP product line is distinguished by its support for a broad range of customer endpoints. XOptions Flex (Local, LD, TF and E911) Supports TDM-based CPE IAD based (Cisco or Adtran) Lines served via FXS IAD ports Trunks served via PRI/CAS T1 IAD ports SIP Trunks (Local, LD, TF and E911) Supports customer operated IP PBXs XO has certified a wide-range of IP PBX vendors and models for interoperability with our SIP trunking services Enterprise SIP Trunks (Local, LD, TF and E911) Hosted PBX (Local, LD, TF and E911) IPVPN or DIA access Partnership with Broadsoft Simple per-seat fixed costs with options to bundle phones into MRC OTT SIP client support for smartphones, tablets and PCs Can be married with all of the above services to offer an integrated and flexible voice service with one TN and one voice mailbox... Copyright XO Communications, LLC. All rights reserved. XO, the XO design logo, and all related marks are registered trademarks of XO Communications. 9
10 The XO VoIP Platforms (1/2) Some high level architecture comments Everything on IP and IP on Everything. Ethernet access is the best way to deliver IP-based services to the customer premise. Multimedia services are (special) applications on CoS-enabled IP/MPLS wide-area networks. Integrated Access via IP is a fundamental technique. SIP & only SIP signaling of media sessions (SD & HD voice and video). TDM media gateways deployed in every market for PSTN interconnect. SBCs placed in core markets for IP-based interconnect with customers and other service providers. Transcoding functionality is currently distributed across SBCs and may be configured in TDM media gateways in the future. Quasi-centralized vs. fully distributed media manipulation design choices continue to be evaluated. Network-based functionality vs. more capable CPE XO tends to favor endpoints and CPE that can provide transcoding, FAX and DTMF support, reducing the need for expensive DSP farms. Copyright XO Communications, LLC. All rights reserved. XO, the XO design logo, and all related marks are registered trademarks of XO Communications. 10
11 The XO VoIP Platforms (2/2) Sonus Networks Softswitch Platform 57 GSX9000 HDHP TDM media gateways in 32 cities with 32,000+ DS1 ports (768,000+ DS0s) for TDM interconnection to other service providers, XO circuit switches, and customers. 50 NBS9000 HDHP SBCs in 10 cities (core nodes of IP/MPLS network) equipped with 500,000+ session licenses for SIP-signaled connectivity via network and customer IP trunk groups. 23 PSX policy servers in core TDM network & 4 PSX policy servers in the SBC network, both implementing a single unified LCR database 9 SGX mated pair SS7 gateways supporting ISUP/TCAP signaling to two Tekelec STP mated pairs Broadsoft Feature Server Platform 26 Application Server pairs across 8 cities (core nodes of IP/MPLS network) hosting 1.3M+ user licenses serving 32,000+ customer locations. 4 geographically distributed XSP servers providing all web-based customer services. 4 geographically distributed Media servers providing common resources such as tones and treatments, as well media services such as audio/video auto attendants, conferencing and multimedia call centers. All applications now hosted under Linux on Oracle Netra x4270 Intel-based servers. SSI LCR Maintenance Application LCR database construction software supporting high-frequency updates of Sonus PSX master policy server. Copyright XO Communications, LLC. All rights reserved. 12 Remaining opportunities and challenges (1/2) Packet network based communications with IETF based standards Nirvana of flexibility, scalability and incredibly low costs per bit-mile, switching event, etc. Curse of complexity many more elements carrying multiple types of traffic makes finding fault significantly more difficult. We seek the ability to monitor the quality of all calls in real time, without spending exorbitant amounts of capital. We think a major component of the answer lies in more fully leveraging the compute resources in CPE. Interoperability SIP is a (set of) standards, right? And it is, to a large degree, but we still see a significant number of intra-vendor issues that must be addressed with one or both vendor parties. And, we continue to engage in certification of new elements and software versions, an activity we would like to see taper off. Security We feel we generally have a handle on all known security concerns with the current VoIP services and platforms. This is not say that we have not experienced issues due to element software vulnerabilities, CPE-based fraud and so on. With the introduction of SIP clients on BYOD using OTT transport telephony services will be more exposed than was previously the case, at least for XO. Capacity planning Vendors still have work to do in characterizing the multi-dimensional capacity envelope of their machines, and service providers would benefit from more sophisticated modeling of complex VoIP networks, inclusive of all elements in the signaling and media paths. Copyright XO Communications, LLC. All rights reserved. XO, the XO design logo, and all related marks are registered trademarks of XO Communications. 12
13 Remaining opportunities and challenges (2/2) Move to full support of IPv6 transport A straight forward proposition that needs greater support from certain vendors and service providers. Out-moded regulatory framework Voice is an application on an IP network and in this context what exactly is the utility of a LATA, etc.? Congestion Control/inter-element feedback Network operators need more sophisticated systems that span multiple types of VoIP network elements to control call congestion. Fax Why do we still do this?
