12 Hazardus Materials Chemicals f Special Cncern - Perxide Frming A wide variety f rganic cmpunds can spntaneusly frm perxides n expsure t air. Perxides are sensitive t heat, frictin, and shck. Label cntainers with receiving, pening and dispsal dates. Stre in amber, transparent bttles. Stre away frm heat surces and sunlight. D nt attempt t pen a cntainer r a perxide frming cmpund if there are whitish crystals arund the cap and/r in the bttle because it may be ptentially explsive. 13 Hazardus Materials Chemical - Engineering Cntrls Chemical Fume Hds are an imprtant tl used t minimize expsure. Hds must be available fr use and functining efficiently at all times. Wrk with vlatile chemicals in fume hds when feasible. Fume hds are nt a place t stre chemicals r equipment. Fume hds are nt designed t cllect particulates If yur hd is nt functining prperly, create On-line Service request. web link

14 Hazardus Materials Chemical - Engineering Cntrls (cnt.) Prir t Using a Fume Hd Check the hd certificatin sticker n the frnt f the hd t ensure that the air flw is between 80 and 150 feet per minute when tested. Check visual alarms t ensure that the hd is functining prperly. Hld a Kimwipe r tissue at the face f the hd t ensure air is flwing int the hd when the fume hd is turned n. Check baffles t be sure slts are pen and unbstructed by equipment r cntainers. Ensure that all chemicals and equipment are at least six inches behind sash Decrease turbulence by pening / clsing sash slwly; avid swift mvements inside / utside f the hd. Keep sash as lw as pssible (clsed when nt in use).

15 Hazardus Materials Chemical - Waste Dispsal N chemical waste shall be discarded via the sink t the sanitary sewer system. When cllecting waste, cmpatible waste streams may be cllected in ne cntainer; never mix incmpatible wastes. Chemical dispsal cntainers: Use cntainers that are in gd cnditin and are cmpatible with waste strage type. Always keep the cntainer clsed during strage; never leave a waste cntainer pen with a funnel in it. Use cntainers with capacities f ne galln r less and never ver fill them. Label all waste cntainers with: The wrds Hazardus Waste. Principle chemical cnstituents. Date that waste was first placed in the cntainer.

BSCs are designed t prtect the prduct, wrker, and envirnment. Laminar flw hds nly prtect the prduct. BSCs remve particulates, nt chemical vaprs. All Bisafety cabinets must be certified annually, prir t initial usage, and if mved. Cntact EH&S befre purchasing a new cabinet fr help in selecting the apprpriate cabinet.

23 Hazardus Materials Bilgical Waste Dispsal Bihazardus waste includes the fllwing general categries: Cultures and stcks. Pathlgical waste. Human and animal bld and bld prducts. Used and unused sharps (e.g., needles, syringes, pipettes, scalpels, brken glass, slides, cver slips). Animal waste (e.g., carcasses and bedding). Islatin wastes. Any ther refuse, which has been mingled with any f the waste(s) listed abve. Never place chemicals, chemical bttles, radiactive materials, r ther trash in biwaste cntainers.

Bihazardus sharps Hazardus Materials Bilgical Waste Dispsal (cnt.) 36 Persnal Prtective Equipment Splash Gggles and Face Shields Splash Gggles must be wrn whenever lab wrkers are using liquid chemicals that culd injure the eyes, including heated liquids. Face Shields must be wrn in cnjunctin with splash gggles if lab wrkers are using chemicals that culd splash and crrde r burn the face, r when using txic chemicals that culd be splashed and absrbed thrugh the skin.

37 Persnal Prtective Equipment Respiratrs Respiratrs must be wrn when there is ptential expsure t cntaminants such as biaersls, dry chemicals and airbrne particulates.
