5 What is Starkit Software Appliance? Starkit helps you to take control of your cloud data ( and documents) from cloud services providers instead of the other way around. Starkit is a self booting software that installs and configures all settings automatically during installation. It is packaged in more generally applicable image format (.iso, Live CD) that supports installations to physical machines and multiple types of virtual machines. 12 Why do I need Starkit for archiving if Google Apps and Office365 do it? Using your provider s archiving service is the largest mistake newbies do. You pay hefty subscriptions to your current provider such as Google Apps or Office 365 for archiving that will work only for hosted with them. What about your other accounts not hosted with them? 14 If I use Starkit do I still need a cloud storage provider (i.e. Dropbox or Google Drive)? No, using your own Starkit appliance, you will no longer need a cloud storage provider such as Dropbox or Google Drive. Your cloud storage provider is you, using your own server where you will install the Starkit software. Starkit build incloud storage functionality is based on the open source software owncloud. 15 What is the difference between Starkit and a mail server (i.e. MS Exchange)? MS Exchange server and other mail servers represent just a sub-set of the services and applications included in Starkit. Privacy is a fundamental part of a dignified life. Even if you think you have nothing to hide, you may indeed have something to fear. You might fear for yourself. As Kafka so chillingly illustrates in The Trial, the prospect of unwarranted government pursuit is terrifying. Or you might fear for our society. Living under the constant gaze of government surveillance can produce long-lasting social harm: if citizens are just a little more fearful, a little less likely to freely associate, a little less likely to dissent the aggregate chilling effect can close what was once an open society. 23 How are my s and files safe from the bad guys, government espionage, competitors and disgruntled employees. Your data is not on someone else s computer The data you send and receive is encrypted The data on your Starkit appliance is encrypted Data on your Starkit appliance cannot be deleted Your data ( s, files, calls, chats) is encrypted at rest and in transit when you use Starkit. That means any unauthorized person who wants to access your data will not be able to read it. If you are using or cloud storage providers like Gmail or Dropbox or a provider in another country, according to the news, the NSA or any other government, pretty much has a direct line to your mailbox and files. Even if they don t have direct access to your data, it is very easy to ask for it from your provider. For example the US government doesn t need a warrant to access your Gmail or Dropbox account, all they need is a National Security Letter and they don t even have to notify you. If you host your own and cloud storage using a Starkit software appliance, at the very least your government has to serve you a warrant to access your data. That is if the government wants to follow the Constitution which they seem to have no problem violating on a daily basis. But, in any case, if your Starkit software appliance falls in the wrong hands, Strarkit has you covered, because all data on your appliance is encrypted and is pretty much unreadable. In addition to the data encryption, the data on your Starkit is never destroyed or deleted, you can always recover it.
