2 Discussion Leadership Forum: Introduction The Anderson Center is pleased to sponsor the Discussion Leadership Forum, led by Harvard Business School s Professor David Garvin, the globally-renowned expert on case method teaching and participant-centered learning. Discussion Leadership Forum: Participants Current and future Discussion Leaders for the Anderson Center s forums, seminars, and programs. College and university business, education, law school, or other faculty, including tenured-track and practitioner-track. CXO s, human resource and organization development executives, and other organizational leaders looking to use the case method inside their organization as an executive development or strategy communication tool. Participants should have some experience with the case method as a teacher or learner, or intend to use the case method in future applications. Discussion Leadership Forum: Objectives To enhance the case teaching and learning capacity of individual participants. To increase the service capacity of the Anderson Center. To develop networking and collaboration opportunities with interested organizations and educational institutions in Central and Greater Minnesota. Discussion Leadership Forum: Benefits Understand the philosophical underpinnings of the case method for adult and professional education. 3 Discussion Leadership Forum: Forum Leader David A. Garvin C. Roland Christensen Professor of Business Administration Chair, MBA Elective Curriculum Harvard Business School Biography David A. Garvin is the C. Roland Christensen Professor of Business Administration at the Harvard Business School. He joined the Business School faculty in 1979 and has since then taught courses in leadership, general management, and operations in the MBA and Advanced Management programs, as well as serving as Faculty Chair of the School's Teaching and Learning Center. A long-time colleague of Roland Christensen pioneer of the case method at Harvard Business School and across Harvard University David has been thinking about, publishing on, and teaching teachers and students about discussion leadership, the case method, and participant-centered learning for several decades. More recently, Mr. Garvin has undertaken research with Professor Srikant Datar on the future of management education, including a series of case studies on the practices of leading institutions. He has also taught in executive education programs and consulted for over fifty organizations, including Biogen Idec, Booz-Allen & Hamilton, BP, Gillette, L. L. Bean, 3M, Morgan Stanley, Novartis, Time Life, and the U.S. Forest Service. Professor Garvin received an A.B. summa cum laude from Harvard College in 1974, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and a Ph.D. in economics from M.I.T. in 1979, where he held a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowship and a Sloan Foundation Fellowship. 4 ANDERSON CENTER DISCUSSION LEADERSHIP FORUM June 13-15, 2011 Discussion Leadership Forum: Dates in 2011 Monday, June 13 Social at 5:30 pm and group dinner at 6:30 pm. Tuesday, June 14 Forum 8 am to 5 pm, evening group dinner. Wednesday, June 15 Forum 8 am to Noon, group lunch, 1 pm departure. Discussion Leadership Forum: Location The Discussion Leadership Forum will be held on the campus of, Collegeville, Minnesota. Overnight accommodations will also be on campus at the new Abbey Guest House, on a first-come, first-serve basis. See Discussion Leadership Forum: Fees & Payment The fee for the Discussion Leadership Forum is $1,000. The fee covers tuition, case materials, meals and lodging. Non-profit organizations receive a 20% discount. Scholarships may be available for individuals that do not have organizational sponsorship for participation in the Forum.
