2 Norway Sweden Finland Helsinki St. Peterburg Estonia Russia Denmark Copenhagen Riga Latvia Lithuania Moscow Russia Transatlantic Estonia at a Glance Hamburg Berlin Germany Poland Population: million Area: 45,227 km 2 Language: Estonian Currency: Estonian kroon (EEK), EUR 1 = EEK (fixed) GDP per capita: 11,581 EUR (2007) GDP growth: 7.1 % (2007) Warsaw Europe Asia Belarus From the High Middle Ages to date, the Baltic Sea has continuously served as a major transport corridor between the East and the West. Once a member of the Hanseatic League and today a capital of a European Union country, Tallinn has been, for centuries, part of a dominating trading alliance. In the 21st century, Estonia is surrounded by wealthy and emerging consumer markets. The Baltic Sea region is the fastest growing business region in Europe. One of the largest ports in the Baltic Sea region is the Port of Tallinn, which is owned by the Estonian state and comprises a total of five ports and harbours. There are also several private ports in Estonia that service international transit trade: Sillamäe a port located only 25 km from the Russian border, Paldiski North Harbour, Kunda Harbour and Pärnu Harbour. The transport sector contributes about 10% to Estonia s billion EUR (2007) gross domestic product, whereas transit trade accounts for more than 80% of the flow of goods. The Port of Tallinn and its subsidiary harbours handled 36 million tons of freight in Estonia s transport and logistics sector is well prepared for new challenges: - Port of Tallinn is planning a new container terminal at Muuga with a capacity of 1.5 million TEU, - Koidula border-crossing station on the Russian- Estonian border is being considerably expanded, - Estonian Government is developing the road network in order to provide more efficient hinterland connections. Preconditions such as regular and fast short sea connections with the major European ports and the effective supply chain assisted by innovative logistical solutions, as well as the precise handling of goods in the ports have been created to be able to cope with larger cargo flows. Estonia is located at the north-western end of the Eurasian railway network. Or at its beginning, depending from which direction to look at Low tariffs is one of the advantages that Estonian rail transport system has over its neighbouring countries. The largest rail freight carrier, Estonian Railways, carried million tons of cargo in The main freight groups on the railway are petroleum and petroleum products. Container volumes have increased vigorously (from 10,661 TEU in 2006 to 16,316 TEU in 2007). As of 2007, there are two regular container routes: Tallinn- Moscow, Russia and Tallinn-Almaty, Kazakhstan. The main partner countries in road transport are Finland, Sweden, Russia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and Germany. Tallinn with its hinterland is Estonia s main transport junction; this is where the busy logistics centres, railways, ports and highways converge. 2 3
