2 INTRODUCING THE 2015 JURORS Janice Driesbach (Chief Curator, Akron Art Museum) has held positions as Executive Director of The Dayton Art Institute ( ), Director of the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery and Sculpture Garden (now the Sheldon Museum of Art) at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln ( ) and Chief Curator of the Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento ( ). In these capacities, she has overseen acquisitions and organized numerous one-person and thematic exhibitions featuring contemporary artists. Her publications include catalogs, articles and brochures on diverse topics, ranging from German and Austrian Expressionism to a guide to the Sheldon s sculpture garden and Ohio artists Julian Stanczak and Christopher Pekoc. Janice Driesbach Martina Lopez Driesbach was raised in Lakewood, Ohio, and has degrees from Allegheny College (BA) and the University of Iowa (MA). has taught art history and served as adjunct faculty for museum studies and women studies programs, as well as on advisory panels. Driesbach has served as a juror and on awards committees and has moderated panels on art collecting. Martina Lopez has been working with 19th century portrait, landscape and digital media since Her interest in the electronic environment lies in the believability of the photograph and malleability of the digital medium. For the last several years, she has been interested in the idea of the digital one-of-a -kind image. She received her B.F.A. from the University of Washington in Seattle and a M.F.A. from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Lopez s artwork has been featured in such publications as Aperture magazine; Naomi Rosenblum's A World History of Photography; The Digital Eye: Photographic Art in the Electronic Age by Sylvia Wolf, Director of the Henry Art Gallery and former curator of photography at the Whitney Museum and the Art Institute of Chicago. Most recently her work was included in a book by Mary Warner Marien, Professor Emerita at Syracuse University and the Batza Family Professor at Colgate University. Marien s book, 100 Ideas That Changed Photography, discusses the most influential ideas in photography s history from the Daguerreotype to current technologies. Lopez has received several grants including a National Endowment for the Arts Visual Arts Photography Fellowship. Her artwork has been exhibited widely and is in many private and public collections such as the Art Institute of Chicago, The Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, DC and the Center for Creative Photography in Tucson, Arizona. Lopez has been teaching at the University of Notre Dame since Her artwork is represented by Schneider Gallery, Chicago. PROFESSIONAL JURORS AMATEUR JUROR Robert E. Peppers, born in 1949 in McMinnville, Tennessee, is a BFA and MFA graduate of the Ohio University (O.U.) School of Art + Design. For a number of years he was the Assistant Director, Black Cultural Center, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana. Mr. Peppers is currently a Professor at the School of Art, O.U. He taught drawing at Penland School of Crafts and painting/collage in the O.U. Art in UK program based at King's College and University of London. Mr. Peppers' work received the "2014 Juror's Award" from Actors Theatre of Louisville in the 20th Annual African American Art Exhibition, the "Best of Mixed Media Juror's Award" from Chicago Museum of Science and Industry in the 2011 Black Creativity Art Exhibition. His exhibition history includes showings at 10 U.S. Embassies; S.A.W. Contemporary Artist Center, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada; King's College, London, England; The High Museum of Art, Atlanta, Georgia; African American Museum, Dallas, Texas; Dadian Arts Gallery at the Henry Luce III Center for the Arts and Religion, Washington D.C. and Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art, Utah State University. See pages 6-7 for details. Looking Forward 2016 Exhibition... A CLAY PERSPECTIVE NEW ARTIST AWARD Presented by the Ohio Arts Council Attention Artists! If you have never entered the Ohio State Fair Fine Arts Exhibition, or have not had a piece accepted into the exhibition in the past, we encourage you to enter this year! Two new artists will each receive an award of $250. All first time amateur and professional artists entering and accepted into the exhibition will be eligible for this award. See page 6-7 for details Please read The Arts Policies and Procedures before continuing. Important Dates: May 29 Entry deadline June 5 - Notifications sent from Fair Judge June 5 - Films ready for Jurors to review June p-8p and June 21 9a-12p Artwork Delivery July 28 - Opening Reception/Awards Ceremony 6p-8p July 29 - August 8 Exhibition hours 9a-9p August 9 - Exhibition hours 9a-6p August 9 - Artwork pick-up 7p-9p (carry-out only; entrance on ground not permitted after 7p) August 10 - Artwork pick-up 10a-8p August 11 - Artwork pick-up 10a-2p Selling Your Art Work: The Ohio State Fair provides artists an opportunity to sell their work during the exhibition. You must provide sale information during the on-line entry process. The Ohio State Fair receives a 30% commission on all artwork sold. However, artwork will only be released after 7p on August 9. 3
4 Department Notes General Notes: Artist must be 17 years of age or older. The director will make the final decision regarding proper artwork condition and placement of each piece. Exhibition space is not climate controlled. The Opening Reception/Awards Ceremony is an invitation only event. Each invitation admits two; additional tickets are available for $5 each. Parking is free for this event. Please refer to the Arts General Policy and Procedure Guidelines and specific division notes for important information. Uploaded Image Specifications Artwork must be photographed on a solid background. One photo shot per 2 D entry. One to two photo shots per 3 D entry. Image(s) must be named after the title of the work it represents. For example if the title of your piece(s) is elephant, then the title of your image file would be elephant1 and the detail shot would be elephant2. Artist name must NOT appear on uploaded images. Uploaded image size requirements: 1024 x 768 pixels or smaller (width x height) - less than 6MB and saved as a JPEG, GIF, BMP or PNG formats only. If your total image file size is greater than 6 MB, you will need to use a photo editing program to re-size the photo image. Free programs available: Microsoft Image Resizer, Microsoft Photo Editor, Picasa, Irfanview, Photoscape and others. Your images must be RGB color format; CMYK files will not upload properly. It may be helpful to move entry images to your desktop (for ease in uploading). For Professional and Amateur Entries: Class 1-2-Dimensional (UPLOAD ONLY ONE IMAGE) Class 2 - Installation/Sculpture (UPLOAD UP TO 2 IMAGES) Entry Instructions: Be sure you have updated your browser to the 2015 Ohio State Fair website First time users may find it helpful to review the Online Entry Tutorial (scroll through 13 steps). A valid address is crucial for future communications, including acceptance/non-acceptance notifications and entry confirmation. Please check spam/junk mail if you haven't received expected notifications. Enter Online and follow instructions as the system walks you through the entry process. In the Description Box type the SIZE/MEDIUM/YEAR/ NFS VALUE or PRICE if for sale. This is the entry s size in feet or inches, medium used, the year completed and the value of the work or sale price and is required BEFORE you upload your images! You can process only one entry at a time. Sessions expire after 20 minutes of inactivity; save to the cart if you plan on leaving your computer for more than 20 minutes. After successfully uploading an image, a photo thumbnail will appear on the right side of the screen. If you make a mistake, log back into My Account. Delivery drop-off and shipping address for accepted artwork: Ohio State Fair Cox Fine Arts Center 717 East 17th Avenue Columbus, OH If you plan to ship your work use the above address. If you plan to hand deliver artwork (see map below for drop off location and directions). The artist is responsible for all shipping costs and in-transit insurance. Shipped artwork must be sent prepaid and in a substantial reusable container. Special shipping instructions and prepaid shipping label must accompany each piece of delivered artwork if it is to be shipped back to artist after Fair. The Ohio State Fair will not be responsible for an insufficient prepaid shipping label and will not pay any difference. 5
6 5101 and 5102 Amateur and Professional Division Notes Must be an Ohio resident. Unlimited entries. Awards will not be announced until the Awards Ceremony. Artists may only enter original untutored work (no reproductions of original work). Artwork must have been completed in the last four years and must be visibly dated (suggested on the back). Artwork previously shown in this exhibition may not be re-entered. Instructions to print entry tags will be ed upon acceptance. Print two tags for each entry accepted into the exhibit; attach one entry tag to the upper right back corner of 2D work, or to the bottom/side of 3D work. The second tag will be required at pick-up. Artwork will not be released without it! Entries will be judged from uploaded digital images. Names not allowed on images! Amateur definition: Artist does not meet the professional criteria. Artist new to or not yet skilled in a particular medium. Artist who creates as a pastime. Professional definition: Artist juried into several exhibitions. Art Work Requirements and Size Limitations: Hanging work must be wired and ready to display (saw-tooth hangers and clip frames will not be accepted). Hanging work may not exceed 8 x 8 or 100 lbs. Artists who submit accepted works with special hanging requirements need to provide hardware, detailed instructions and/or be present to hang. Installation/Sculpture style art pieces may not exceed 10 x10 x17 and must be installed by the artist. Glass or Plexiglas must be used over water media, drawings, prints, photographs and 2-D mixed media artworks. Artist must obtain approval by the director for any deviations to these limitations. 8 5103 Film Division Notes Open to all US residents. Only family friendly genre accepted. Films will be exhibited/viewed on a continual rotation. Short films may not exceed 10 minutes (including the opening title card and closing credits). Link for each entry (YouTube or Vimeo) must be ed to s.libertini@expo.state.oh.us. The body of this must include: the film s title, length in minutes, year completed and a brief description of the film. Accepted entries will need to provide two DVDs per each accepted short film entry; one standard DVD and on QuickTime file saved on DVD. DVD s will not be returned. Artists are responsible for all film/video production costs. Artist grants OEC/OSF film use privileges (i.e. web site, blog, catalog, etc.). Artists are responsible for short film submissions (i.e. rights, releases, licenses, etc.). Management will pre-screen all works prior to the jury process. 9 5104 On Site Competition Division Notes Plein Air Painting New dates: Monday August 3-Wednesday August 5. Artists may enter one painting per day (one entry fee per day is required). Only one piece of artwork must be returned to the north entrance of the Cox Fine Arts Center by 7pm on each day you compete. Artist entering by deadline of May 29 will receive in the mail no later than June 30 one parking pass and one adult admission pass per day entered. Artists entering the day of competition will pay a $50 entry fee for each day entered and will not receive parking and admission passes. Check-in: 9a - 10a at the Cox Fine Arts Center each day of competition. Artist will be provided a "working artist" sign to place in the area they select to work in. Canvas must be checked and marked as blank by Fine Arts staff during registration. Canvas must be wired and ready to hang. Artists must supply their own materials and supplies.
