3 WHAT IS... INTERNATIONAL SEMESTERS, WHAT ARE THEY? A Howest International Semester programme is a coherent package of course units which a Howest Bachelor programme can offer fully in English, as an option for semester exchange, to incoming students from its partner universities abroad, and as a study abroad option to other international students. Many of those English-taught course units are also followed by local Howest students, whereas the rest of the course units of their BA programme are offered in Dutch. Whether in our professional or personal lives, digital technology is everywhere. Everyone uses it to communicate and organise. The real question is whether we use computers and other tools to their full potential? Do we make them work for us? A professional digital creative is able to make full use of the existing information technology to plan and organise projects, to keep track of budgets, to organise mailings, as well as generate state-of-the-art communication plans with visuals, sound, and imaging to make any project stand out and be successful. WHAT IS A DIGITAL CREATIVE JOURNALIST? Anno 2015, hardly anyone doubts that the future of news is digital and online. The technological evolution created challenges for traditional journalists, but also offers plenty of opportunities to cover news more creatively. A digital creative journalist possesses vital new skills: visual and digital storytelling, entrepreneurship and an international, cross-media mindset. 4 COURSE CONCEPT COURSE OVERVIEW Together with students from different nationalities and backgrounds you learn to use information technology in order to plan, coordinate, communicate and illustrate a professional project. You put your new knowledge and skills to the test in an integrated project in which you will take the role of the journalist in a multidisciplinary team. WHAT MAKES THIS SEMESTER UNIQUE? JOURNALISM COURSES INTEGRATED PROJECT You will perform as a digital creative creative journalist in an international and interdisciplinary team. You learn to overcome cultural differences in communication and group dynamics. You tackle a real life project and deliver a deadline driven result. 18 ECTS 9 ECTS an international mix of students contacts between Belgian and international students an integrated project during which you will be coached to take up the role of the journalist in a multidisciplinary team the exclusive use of English as the working language the focus on the international dimension in various course units the journalism focus in digital creative topics JOURNALISTIC PORTFOLIO AND PROJECTS This course stimulates students to develop a journalistic attitude. Students are encouraged and coached to publish journalistic products on an individual portfolio website (Wordpress based). They learn how to pitch their work and work as an entrepreneurial freelancer. Furthermore the students take part in diverse projects that the Howest Journalism Department organises for its own students (international guest speakers, visit to Belgian and European political institutions, etc.) ENGLISH FOR THE MEDIA The English courses are designed to give the students weekly practice in English speaking, reading, writing and listening in order to increase the students confi dence and ability in the language. The students will have to analyse English news-related articles, videos, radio programs each week, increasing their vocabulary, comprehension and reporting skills. The students will also be faced with English speaking presentations in person and/or virtually, which they will have to report on. Students will also practice interviewing skills and will be judged on their question-asking abilities. Students will be expected to use online and offl ine resources in English for additional practice and self-study. 3 ECTS 3 ECTS INTERNATIONAL MEDIA This course aims to guide students through the international media landscape. It gives students insights in the developments and trends that characterize today s globalised media landscape. The focus lies on a comparative approach and the interaction of media models with political, historical and cultural background. The course combines (academic) theory with illustrative case studies. 3 ECTS DIGITAL CREATIVE COURSES 12 ECTS 6 TACKLE A REAL LIFE PROJECT AND DELIVER A DEADLINE DRIVEN RESULT DIGITAL PROJECT MANAGEMENT Manage a project through the different project phases via the use of digital best practices in MS Offi ce tooling (excel, outlook, word and powerpoint) DIGITAL PROJECT COMMUNICATION Boost a project through the execution of a state-of-the-art communication plan. Support your communication with creative multi-media. Learn to create/upgrade these media (image, sound, video) through the use of Adobe tooling (photoshop, illustrator, premiere, after effects, audacity) 6 ECTS 6 ECTS 7

5 ORIENTATION WEEK PREREQUISITES We organise a fulltime orientation week before the start of the actual lessons. We warmly recommend all incoming students to attend it, since it will offer you the opportunity to: get to know the other incoming students and the locals through fun team building & other activities get to know Howest and the campus(es) where you will spend your semester/year explore the Howest cities Bruges & Kortrijk together with our local students and dive into student life discover some Belgian cultural treasures through student-friendly sightseeing trips to our most beautiful art cities like Ghent, Antwerp, Brussels, get loads of practical tips from our students while getting installed in your student room Howest does not charge a participation fee for the orientation week, but students do need to pay for their own expenses, such as a couple of train trips (with a Go Pass this comes down to max. 5,1/train journey), some entrance fees (at student & group fares) and your own food & drinks. Everything in the low-cost way, and without any obligation as to participate in the paying activities. Minimum 2 successfully completed semesters or an equivalent of 60 ECTS in a Bachelor programme. This will need to be confirmed by means of an official certificate, a survey of completed courses, transcripts of records or a signed letter from the sending university. The English proficiency level we expect from incoming students is the B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Foreign Languages (CEFR), in reading, writing, speaking and understanding skills. We expect applying students to provide proof of their proficiency in English in one of the following ways: A signed confirmation letter from the sending university, stating that the applicant s language skills reach the B2 level and thus are sufficient to attend courses, participate in different types of classroom and examination activities. (Only valid for exchange students) The results of a (free) online language test which can be related to the CEFR B2 level, such as Dialang, Testpodium or the Erasmus online language test. The online test should have been taken under the supervision of the sending institution. The result sheet needs to be stamped and signed by a staff member of the sending institution. (only valid for exchange students) An official certificate or score report referring to the European Framework or from one of the recognised language tests, e.g. TOEFL: paper based 550/internet based 79/computer based 213 or IETLS: 5.5, no partial results below 5. The following applicants are not required to document their language skills for study at Howest: applicants from countries having English as their national language; applicants attending a full-time degree programme at their home institution taught in English. 8 FUN TEAM BUILDING! Howest reserves the right to contact the sending university to verify the information on language proficiency, or to contact the applicant for a telephone or Skype conversation in English. 9

6 PREREQUISITES All students should bring their own laptop. To be suffi cient the laptop should have a minimum i5 intel processor and minimum 6Gb RAM. Howest is focused on innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship. Explicit respect for intellectual property is the logical consequence. Howest wants every student to work with legal software. For the required software Howest has an agreement for all its students with Academic Software. You will benefit from the Howest discount on the licence fee. During the fi rst classes an English version of MS Offi ce (required MS Word, MS Excel, MS Powerpoint, MS Outlook) and an English version of Adobe CC14 will be installed on your laptop. There is no need to install the software beforehand. Non-exchange students can only attend the international semester as a Postgraduate course and need to have completed at least a full Bachelor degree programme at the time they start the international semester course at Howest. ACADEMIC RECOGNITION This international semester is an integrated part of the Howest Bachelor courses in Kortrijk. Howest fully applies the ECTS grading system and awards credits for the successfully achieved course units. After concluding the semester, all students receive an offi cial ECTS transcript of records and Certifi cate. PRACTICAL INFORMATION TIMING AND LOCATION The course takes place in the city of Kortrijk, which is located at a short distance of the historic city of Bruges, one of Belgium s top tourist destinations, and at only one hour from the Belgian coast. The campus can be reached very easily by public transportation, or is a 20 minute walk from the station. Our Autumn semester runs from September 14th 2015 until January 30th The first week is the fulltime Orientation Week. The actual lessons start on September 21st. From 02/11/ /11/2015 there is one week of Autumn Holiday. Winter holidays are from 21/12/2015 till 02/01/2016. The examination period starts immediately afterwards. In the last week of the semester (25/01-30/01) there are still exams, but also feedback sessions for students. Exchange students can be offered the opportunity to do early resit exams during that last week. The regular Howest resit exams are scheduled between 15/08 and 10/09/2016.You fi nd our academic calendar in English at Address of the campus Howest Kortrijk: Campus Renaat de Rudderlaan 6, 8500 Kortrijk, Belgium Howest s campuses are cashless. TUITION FEE AND ACCOMMODATION For exchange students sent by our Erasmus and overseas partner institutions this course is tuition free. Non-exchange students pay a tuition fee of The fee does not include course or other materials, nor the cost for cultural visits or study excursions (transport, entrance fees ). Those have to be paid on location. Howest has cashless campuses. Payments have to be made through a bank card. Do not forget to activate the Maestro function on it before you leave your country. A student room in Kortrijk will cost you between 150 and 350 per month. STIP Howest, our students services, will help you fi nd suitable accommodation. For nationals from outside the European Economic Area we strongly recommend to apply at least one month earlier! All applications are subject to approval by the Howest International Semesters team.
