3 WHAT IS... INTERNATIONAL SEMESTERS, WHAT ARE THEY? A Howest International Semester programme is a coherent package of course units which a Howest Bachelor programme can offer fully in English, as an option for semester exchange, to incoming students from its partner universities abroad, and as a study abroad option to other international students. Many of those English-taught course units are also followed by local Howest students, whereas the rest of the course units of their BA programme are offered in Dutch. Whether in our professional or personal lives, digital technology is everywhere. Everyone uses it to communicate and organise. The real question is whether we use computers and other tools to their full potential? Do we make them work for us? A professional digital creative is able to make full use of the existing information technology to plan and organise projects, to keep track of budgets, to organise mailings, as well as generate state-of-the-art communication plans with visuals, sound, and imaging to make any project stand out and be successful. WHAT IS A DIGITAL CREATIVE OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST? Today, health care is in full digital development and the use of digitalised therapy is entirely justifi ed within occupational therapy. The world of assistive technology provides great digital tools to support locomotion, sensory-motor, attention, coordination, time etc. The main objective is always the optimal level of inclusion and participation. In the opendesign culture, digital production technologies are applied to develop personal aids adapted to the client, which improve considerably the occupations of each client. INTERNATIONAL SEMESTER PROGRAMMES IN SPRING: FROM FEBRUARY TO THE END OF JUNE International Business Management II (Howest Bruges) Applied Computer Sciences (Howest Bruges) Digital Creative Projects Communication (Howest Kortrijk) Digital Creative Projects in Product Design (Howest Kortrijk) Digital Creative Projects in Occupational Therapy (Howest Kortrijk) NEW Selecting courses from different International Semesters is only possible if both programmes are organised on the same campus ánd if their schedules allow it. Schedules are only available shortly before the start of the semester. The digital creative occupational therapist takes into account crucial economic and ecologic issues, and provides professional customised care for each client. In addition, occupational therapists search for evidence on digital databases to be able to work with the most effective and recent therapy. Using internet, searching in databases, practicing with serious gaming, robotics, therapeutic apps and e-health, an occupational therapist needs to fi nd easily the way in this world to meet the specifi c needs of the clients. Occupational therapists follow closely the development and possibilities of each client and use creative techniques to adapt the assistive technology. The occupational therapist meets clients of all ages; deals with post-natal to palliative and all kind of needs; development, mental health, rehabilitation, geriatrics. Being an expert in grading, accessibility and above all in listening to the wishes of the client, an occupational therapist provides meaningful occupations to achieve quality of life. 4 5

4 COURSE CONCEPT COURSE OVERVIEW Together with students from different nationalities and backgrounds you learn to use information technology to plan, coordinate, communicate and illustrate a professional project. You put your new knowledge and skills to the test in an integrated project in which you will take the role of the health care expert in a multidisciplinary team. WHAT MAKES THIS SEMESTER UNIQUE? its focus on digital skills vital to today s health care context its focus on creative, innovative product development the international dimension in several course units the challenging integrated project in which you will be coached to assume the role of the occupational therapist in a multicultural and multidisciplinary team the collaboration between Belgian and international students from Europe and beyond the exclusive use of English as the working language INCLUSION AND QUALITY OF LIFE FOR CLIENTS IS OUR GOAL PRODUCT DESIGN COURSES INTEGRATED PROJECT Learn to overcome cultural differences in communication and group dynamics. You will perform as a digital creative occupational therapist in an international and interdisciplinary team. Together with product design and communication management students, you tackle a real-life project. You will be responsible for the interaction with clients and the overall wellbeing factor of the project. An occupational therapist bridges the cultural sensitivity to coach a team towards a successful story. EVIDENCE BASED TOPIC Focus on a special client group of your interests and the assistive technologies or digital therapies which are evidence based. Learn to fi nd a creative pathway to use or adapt evidence in balance with the possibilities of the client(s). Write a CAT (critical appraised topic) during several professional coached workshops. ENTREPRENEURSHIP WITH INTERNATIONAL SCOPE (1) Design for (every)one is a Belgium based research and education project between Ghent University (Ugent) and the University College West-Flanders (Howest). It aims to bridge the gap between open design and assistive technology through co-design. Co-construction is applied as a process involving simultaneously design team members, patients and occupational therapists. Together with the client and product developing students, the occupational therapy students create an assistive prototype-tool oncoming the wishes of the client. After a try-out, improvement of details will be done to achieve the goal of participation, inclusion and quality of life for this client, who is a real case. Discover some examples on designforeveryone.howest.be ENTREPRENEURSHIP WITH INTERNATIONAL SCOPE (2) The international module on Paediatric Rehabilitation is an initiative of Rehabilitation Sciences and Physiotherapy Ghent in cooperation with the Ghent University Association partners (including Howest) and the Child Rehabilitation Centre, University Hospital Ghent. The students will experience issues of Paediatric Rehabilitation from the perspective of other countries and cultures, particularly those countries within the European Union. It is the purpose to develop and exchange expertise, especially on the rehabilitation of children with developmental and acquired brain injuries. DIGITAL CREATIVE COURSES DIGITAL PROJECT MANAGEMENT Manage a project through the different project phases via the use of digital best practices in MS Offi ce tooling (excel, outlook, word and powerpoint) 18 ECTS 9 ECTS 3 ECTS 3 ECTS 3 ECTS 12 ECTS 6 ECTS 6 DIGITAL PROJECT COMMUNICATION Boost a project through the execution of a state-of-the-art communication plan. Support your communication with creative multi-media. 5 ORIENTATION WEEK PREREQUISITES We organise a fulltime orientation week before the start of the actual lessons. We warmly recommend all incoming students to attend it, since it will offer you the opportunity to: get to know the other incoming students and the locals through fun team building & other activities get to know Howest and the campus(es) where you will spend your semester/year explore the Howest cities Bruges & Kortrijk together with our local students and dive into student life discover some Belgian cultural treasures through student-friendly sightseeing trips to our most beautiful art cities like Ghent, Antwerp, Brussels, get loads of practical tips from our students while getting installed in your student room Howest does not charge a participation fee for the orientation week, but students do need to pay for their own expenses, such as a couple of train trips (with a Go Pass this comes down to max. 5,1/train journey), some entrance fees (at student & group fares) and your own food & drinks. Everything in the low-cost way, and without any obligation as to participate in the paying activities. Minimum 2 successfully completed semesters or an equivalent of 60 ECTS in a Bachelor programme. This will need to be confirmed by means of an official certificate, a survey of completed courses, transcripts of records or a signed letter from the sending university. The English proficiency level we expect from incoming students is the B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Foreign Languages (CEFR), in reading, writing, speaking and understanding skills. We expect applying students to provide proof of their proficiency in English in one of the following ways: A signed confirmation letter from the sending university, stating that the applicant s language skills reach the B2 level and thus are sufficient to attend courses, participate in different types of classroom and examination activities. (Only valid for exchange students) The results of a (free) online language test which can be related to the CEFR B2 level, such as Dialang, Testpodium or the Erasmus online language test. The online test should have been taken under the supervision of the sending institution. The result sheet needs to be stamped and signed by a staff member of the sending institution. (only valid for exchange students) An official certificate or score report referring to the European Framework or from one of the recognised language tests, e.g. TOEFL: paper based 550/internet based 79/computer based 213 or IETLS: 5.5, no partial results below 5. The following applicants are not required to document their language skills for study at Howest: applicants from countries having English as their national language; applicants attending a full-time degree programme at their home institution taught in English. 8 FUN TEAM BUILDING! Howest reserves the right to contact the sending university to verify the information on language proficiency, or to contact the applicant for a telephone or Skype conversation in English. 9

6 PREREQUISITES All students should bring their own laptop. To be suffi cient the laptop should have a minimum i5 intel processor and minimum 6Gb RAM. Howest is focused on innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship. Explicit respect for intellectual property is the logical consequence. Howest wants every student to work with legal software. For the required software Howest has an agreement for all its students with Academic Software. You will benefit from the Howest discount on the licence fee. During the fi rst classes an English version of MS Offi ce (required MS Word, MS Excel, MS Powerpoint, MS Outlook) and an English version of Adobe CC14 will be installed on your laptop. There is no need to install the software beforehand. Non-exchange students cannot attend this international semester programme. ACADEMIC RECOGNITION This international semester is an integrated part of the Howest Bachelor courses in Kortrijk. Howest fully applies the ECTS grading system and awards credits for the successfully achieved course units. After concluding the semester, all students receive an offi cial ECTS transcript of records and Certifi cate. PRACTICAL INFORMATION TIMING AND LOCATION The course takes place in the city of Kortrijk, which is located at a short distance of the historic city of Bruges, one of Belgium s top tourist destinations, and at only one hour from the Belgian coast. The campus can be reached very easily by public transportation, or is a 20 minute walk from the station. Our Spring semester runs from February 8th until July 2nd Classes start on 8 February, but all newly arriving incoming students are expected on Monday February 1st, for our fulltime Orientation Week. From 28/03/ /04/2016 there is a two-week Easter Holiday. The examination period starts in the last week of May. The last week of the semester (27/06-02/07) there are feedback sessions for students. Exchange students can be offered the opportunity to do early resit exams during that week. The regular Howest resit exams are scheduled between 15/08 and 10/09/2016. TUITION FEE AND ACCOMMODATION This course is tuition free, since it is exclusively meant for exchange students sent by our Erasmus and overseas partner institutions. The fee does not include course or other materials, nor the cost for cultural visits or study excursions (transport, museum entrance fees ). Those have to be paid on location. Howest has cashless campuses. Payments have to be made through a bank card. Do not forget to activate the Maestro function on it before you leave your country. A student room in Kortrijk will cost you between 150 and 350 per month. STIP Howest, our students services, will help you fi nd suitable accommodation.
