3 HOWEST UNIVERSITY OF APPLIED SCIENCES Howest is a dynamic university of applied sciences, focused on innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship. Howest is a member of Ghent University Association, which provides high-quality higher education to about 1/3 of Flanders student population. We offer degree programmes in Architecture, Healthcare, Business and Management, Industrial Sciences and Technology, Education and Social Sciences, on four campuses in the historical cities of Bruges and Kortrijk, in the province of West Flanders, Belgium. Over the years, Howest has built a solid reputation in application-oriented scientifi c research, services and continuous education, working with distinguished academic, social profi t organisations and enterprises as partners in Europe, and all over the world. Our students and staff are given plenty of opportunities to go global, thanks to regional, national and international networks, scholarships and exchange programmes. Howest has coordinated highly successful national and international projects, and is an active partner in many others. We constantly develop our course offer in English in order to position Howest as an attractive academic choice for students from abroad, who are looking for an open, vibrant, cosmopolitan and friendly destination. We warmly welcome students from our Erasmus and overseas partner institutions for an exchange period. At this moment, Howest offers one full degree programme in English, the Bachelor of Digital Arts and Entertainment ( as well as 12 English taught International Semesters in 11 different study areas, each of them representing at least 30 ECTS. 3

And in a couple of hours the train will take you to European cities like Paris, London, Amsterdam, Cologne etc. 4

5 THE FIVE PILLARS OF PRODUCT DESIGN Every industrial product designer creates products. He or she always starts with a concept, which fi nally is being materialized. During this design process, the designer takes into account technical possibilities, social trends and needs, design and functionality. This requires both creativity and technical insight. Design and creativity, engineering, user and usage (user centered design), flexible production and multimedia, presentation: these fi ve pillars are the ingredients of our study program. 5

6 COURSE CONCEPT Besides the designer, there are a lot of stakeholders in the process of turning an idea into a product. With a bird s-eye perspective on the global industrialization process and all its actors, students will create, materialize, produce and launch a product into the market. Therefor they will be writing a business plan, researching the target group, contacting and visiting production companies, creating a marketing plan and getting a small project into production. 7 IN THE SPOTLIGHT INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL From August 24th to the September 5th, you can participate in our international summer school. During this fortnight an international team of experts from several educational and industrial partners in Europe bring together students and young professionals from different technical creative courses and disciplines such as digital design, development, product design, architecture, industrial design, furniture design, interior design, graphic design, illustration, multimedia and many more. Based on your personal interest and the competences you have obtained you will explore your technical creativity in a set of workshops on Prototyping or Motion Graphics. Professionals in each track will give you new insights and in-depth training on specific topics such as: Creative Prototyping: 3D printing, laser cutting, clay modeling, wood bending, wood turning, welding, DIY cooking material, easy handling packaging, foam modeling Motion Graphics: sound editing, tracking in video, 2D animation, video mapping,... In the second week a creative and interdisciplinary challenge, where prototyping meets motion graphics, will put your new skills to the test! You and your team will help promote the Belgian/Flemish touristic industry or local delicacies by means of an interactive installation. The result will be exhibited to a wide public in Flanders. This summer school programme will be rewarded with 3 ECTS, a lot of new international contacts and many hands-on skills. Participation cost 650. More info on summerschool.howest.be 7

8 ENGLISH FOR EXCHANGE STUDENTS ENGLISH FOR EXCHANGE STUDENTS IN HIGHER EDUCATION: A TWO-WEEK INTENSIVE LANGUAGE PREPARATION This course has been designed for our incoming and outgoing exchange students in order to provide them with an optimal linguistic preparation for their English study abroad (one semester or year). It is offered as a two-week crash course (a total of 60 hours, Mondays to Fridays) before the start of the international semester at Howest (see course overview). Classes will take place all day, every day, except for weekends. This course provides exchange students with an intensive training in speaking, listening, reading and writing skills, and is focused on their upcoming academic experience. The diversity of the academic backgrounds of the participants will be taken into account by choosing and covering a wide range of relevant topics. The course will also function as an excellent networking opportunity for the students who are about to start their study abroad. One field trip will be organised. We strongly recommend English for Exchange Students in Higher Education for students who have not fully achieved the B2-level in English at the moment of application. More proficient students will benefit from the immersion and acclimatisation experience. This course will always fall under the Learning Agreement and has to be attended for the full two-week period. As the number of places will be limited, we expect students whose attendance has been confirmed to show up in time and to fully participate. There is an extra cost for the handbook and the field trip. ACADEMIC RECOGNITION This international semester is an integrated part of the Howest Bachelor courses in Kortrijk. Howest fully applies the ECTS grading system and awards credits for the successfully achieved course units. After concluding the semester, all students receive an official ECTS Transcript of Records and Certificate. 8

9 PREREQUISITES Minimum 2 successfully completed semesters or an equivalent of 60 ECTS in a Bachelor programme in product design, interior design, industrial design, mechanical design, packaging design, furniture design This will need to be confirmed by means of an official certificate, a survey of completed courses, transcripts of records or a signed letter from the sending university. The profi ciency level we expect from incoming students is the B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Foreign Languages (CEFR), in reading, writing, speaking and understanding skills. We expect applying students to provide proof of their profi ciency in English in one of the following ways: A signed confi rmation letter from the sending university, stating that the applicant s language skills reach the B2 level and thus are suffi cient to attend courses, participate in different types of classroom and examination activities. (Only valid for exchange students) The results of a (free) online language test which can be related to the CEFR B2 level,such as the Erasmus online test, Dialang and Testpodium. The online test must be taken under the supervision of the sending institution. The result sheet needs to be stamped and signed by a staff member of the sending institution. (Only valid for exchange students) An offi cial certifi cate or score report referring to the European Framework or from one of the recognized language tests, e.g. TOEFL: paper based 550/internet based 79/computer based 213 or IETLS: 5.5, no partial results below 5. The following applicants are not required to document their language skills for study at Howest: applicants from countries having English as their national language; applicants attending a full-time degree programme at their home institution taught in English. Howest reserves the right to contact the sending university to verify the information on language profi ciency, or to contact the applicant for a telephone or Skype conversation in English. 9

10 PREREQUISITES All students should bring their own laptop, with all necessary and officially licensed software for MS Office and Adobe CC. The course overview above mentions the specific software necessary for the course unit. Howest applies a very strict policy on the use of legal software. If you have a Mac, you need to be able to run bootcamp. Non exchange students cannot attend this international semester at Howest. TIMING & LOCATION You will study in Kortrijk, with its design region, Week van het ontwerpen, de kreun, Budalab on the Buda Kunstencentrum, Bienale Interieur and many innovative companies, a nice place for any creative spirit. All classes will take place at the Howest Industrial Design Center. An open design campus, where students can prototype, brainstorm, create all their idea s (industrialdesigncenter.be). Your teachers are experienced and will share their up-to-date knowledge as well as broaden your understanding of their field of activity. All Howest staff will warmly welcome you. Our Fall semester runs from September 15th 2014 until January 30th The first week is an orientation week; students are informed of the exact day of their welcome session by . From 27/10/ /11/2014 there is one week of Autumn Holiday. Winter holidays are from 22/12/2014 till 04/01/2015. The examination period starts immediately afterwards. 11 TUITION FEE AND ACCOMMODATION TUITION FEE AND ACCOMMODATION The international semester is tuition free, since it is only meant for exchange students from partner universities. Course or other materials and the cost for occasional trips will have to be paid cash on location. As a Howest student, you have access to our modern computer infrastructure. Via the laptop project, wireless internet, the electronic study platform Leho and numerous other ICT facilities, you have everything you need for school and self-study assignments, group work, research, etc. Each Howest student also receives a personal address. You order your courses online to later collect them at the course service Cursoa in the main building. At the BEEP, you can study in peace, meet up with your project group and work on your selfstudy assignments. You have access to online journals and e-books. You can also consult a number of digital sources at home via a VPN connection with the Howest network. You can consult the catalogue of all Howest multimedia centers at As a Howest student, you can consult books and journals at all Howest multimedia centers or you can check them out for free. Each class day, campus restaurant t Obee serves breakfast, hot and cold meals of the day, soup and sandwiches (also for vegetarians). A student room in Kortrijk will cost you between 150 and 300 per month. Stuvo Howest, our students services, will assist you in your search for accommodation if you wish. You can also look for accommodation via which includes a searching engine in English. Bear in mind though that fi nding accommodation on your own can be quite challenging if you don t speak any Dutch or you only stay one semester. 11
