3 Tech Prep Law & Public Safety MINUTES Meeting date time 4/22/ :00 PM Meeting location Building 19, Room 219 Meeting called by Type of meeting AGENDA TOPICS Jess Moore Year-end wrap-up/updates Attendees: James Combs, John Demmitt, Mike Farthing, Tim Keene, Jeff Piper, Sandra Welborn Presenters: Jess Moore, Bob Rice, Tracey Brown, Rob Chambers, Joe Kelly Agenda topic Miami Valley Tech Prep Consortium Update Presenter Jess Moore Items 2.a-e on agenda. See MVTPC PowerPoint slides 2-6. Item 2.f College Credit Plus (slides 7-8): MVTPC is working together with ODE, OBR and Sinclair Community College leadership to clarify CC+ initiative and TP. Tech Prep as we administer it, is not CC+ in that sense that it is articulated credit, not transcripted credit. In CC+, the students are enrolled in the class while attending high school, and receive a grade at that time. In Tech Prep, they are not. They only receive credit for the course: After they graduate When they register for an actual SCC course If/When they request the credit Therefore, our Tech Prep (as currently offered) does not meet the requirements of a 15 or 30 hour pathway. The only way we could meet the requirement is if they actually signed up for the course (like CC+), were assigned a grade (no opting in or out of having the grade count) and paid $40 per credit hour (just like CC+ courses). More information will be coming forward from Sinclair Community College leadership as we move forward with CC+. Item 2.g on agenda. See MVTPC PowerPoint slides Agenda topic Public Safety Day 2015 Presenters Tracey Brown and Jess Moore Agenda item 3.a-b. See PowerPoint slides Event Date: Wednesday, September 16, 2015 Suggested Improvements for 2015 : Organize more chaperones to ensure that student groups visiting tables number no more than 15 students. Bob Rice proposed that LPS Capstone students (up to 40 in the program) lead student groups as a mandatory special assignment for their project. Organize a panel of experts to present to students in the Building 2 Theater (if space is available) or perhaps Smith Auditorium in Building 12. The panel might include speakers from highway patrol, PD, legal, etc. and Bob Rice would most likely assume role as facilitator. We would like to see more tables representing a wider variety of LPS professionals (i.e. Border Patrol, FBI, Crime Lab, Corrections, etc.). Look into inviting Gov. Kasich of Ohio Attorney General, Mike DeWine, to be the keynote speaker for panelists. This is a great opportunity for his office to promote industry certificates and workforce development in Ohio.

4 Wendell Meyers will contact local armed forces offices to see if they could provide any large, interactive military displays. There was also discussion about contacting WPAFB to see if they could do a drone demo. Agenda topic Fire Science Technology Presenter Rob Chambers Agenda items 4.a-b. FST Chair, Rob Chambers met one-on-one with Tim Keene, who was the only Tech Prep Fire Fighter teacher in attendance. Any questions related to the FST program should be directed to Rob at or robert.chambers@sinclair.edu. Agenda topic CJS 1101 Presenter Jess Moore Agenda items 5.a-c. See PowerPoint slide 13. At the beginning of 2015, the OBR rolled out a new CTAG for Introduction to Criminal Justice and the Sinclair equivalency is CJS This means that the MVTPC can no longer offer CJS 1101 as a proficiency class for and beyond. High schools and CTCs must be CTAG approved to for students to receive credit for the Introduction to Criminal Justice course at any Ohio public college or university that has a CTAG equivalent. As mentioned above, the Sinclair equivalent-course is CJS According to documents published by OBR three courses will be required to earn credit for this CTAG: the American Criminal Justice System (ODE Course ), Police Work and Practice in Public Safety (ODE Course ), and The Correctional System and Services (ODE Course ). In order to access college credit student must pass all 3 courses and receive a qualifying score on the End of Course examination for each course. For more information visit: If a school needs help with the CTAG approval process then the teacher and their administrator should contact Robert Rob Speckert CTAG/CTAN Consultant for the Southern Ohio Region, Miami University - Hamilton campus (513) or speckere@miamioh.edu (513) (cell) (513) (home) Agenda topic Criminal Justice Department Update Presenters Bob Rice and Joe Kelly Agenda items 6.a-d. Dr. Bob Rice was on hand to discuss changes in the CJS department with a particular emphasis on the programs offered. One of the major changes is the decrease in required hours for the CJS-Corrections degree. The total number of hours required for that degree has dropped from to 63 semester hours in fall The Law Enforcement and Cyber Investigation Technology degrees have not changed from last year to this upcoming school year and the certificates remain unaffected. Despite the loss of CJS 1101 as a proficiency course for the and beyond, there are 4 CJS courses: 1105 Criminal Law, 1155 Homeland Security Issues and Administration, 1125 Policing, and 2205 Introduction to Criminal Investigation and Forensic Science that can be offered for proficiency credit. Any LPS teachers interested in offering them for the school year should contact Jess Moore jess.moore@sinclair.edu and Bob Rice at for information and support. Joe Kelly from Cengage was on hand to demonstrate MindTap for Criminal Justice: He can be reached at joe.kelly@cengage.com or (855) ext Agenda topic ODE/OBR update Presenter Jess Moore Agenda items 7.a-b. See PowerPoint slides LPS fell under the CTE-26 renewal schedule this year, marking the implementation of the new course to program model. Medical Terminology - HIM 1101, which is included on the MVTPC credit option sheet, is also a CTAG for the school year and beyond, so it will be removed from the credit option sheet. Page 2
