2 Grand Rapids Community College Law Enforcement Page 2 *** Possible Articulated Courses and Early College Courses CJ 110- Introduction to CJ 105- Introduction to Corrections These courses are articulated with baccalaureate programs at other colleges or Universities. Students should check with the transferring institution about the acceptance of articulation credits. Courses that may be offered at the Kent Career Technology Center and Career line Tech Center CJ 110 Introduction to Courses that may be offered at the Kent Career Technology Center CJ 105 Introduction to Corrections If a student is placed into foundation classes s/he MUST first take those classes (EN097, RD097, RD098, MA095, MA097, MA098, PY097) Please see a counselor or department advisor for questions.
3 Page 3 The following is designed to inform counselors (CC and HS), parents and students of the necessary prerequisite knowledge, skills and abilities a student must possess prior to starting this program. 1. Intake or Assessment necessary to enter the program. Students must meet the admission requirements for Grand Rapids Community College, that is, 1) An ACT score of an 18 or higher in the categories of math, reading and English, 2) a high school GPA of 2.0 or higher or 12 college credits with a GPA of 2.0 or higher. Students who do not meet these requirements will be required to take the related component of the Accuplacer placement test. It is highly recommended that students be required to take the appropriate placement classes before being eligible to take the prerequisites into the program. It is further recommended that students take higher level classes in EN and MA which are seen to further ensure success. It is also recommended that new students entering GRCC take Introduction to College, CLS 100, in the first semester of college. 2. Academic standards high school and adult learners should possess. Include comparison of reading levels. There are 9 pre-requisite classes that must be taken before being academically eligible for the Police Academy. Every student must pass these classes and have an overall GPA of 2.0 before entering the program. EN 100 (4 cr) and EN 102(3cr) or EN 101 (3cr) and EN 102(3cr) PS 110 (3cr) Com 131 or 135 (3cr) ** CJ 110 (3cr) CJ 111(3cr) CJ 122 (3cr) Natural Science (4cr)* Natural Science with a lab (4cr) *Math may be required at transfer schools ** Recommended that students take a total of 8 humanities credit GRCC Law Enforcement Reading Levels comparison Page 4
4 It is recommended that students entering the program have at least a college reading level; however, the licensing board (MCOLES) only requires the passing of a Reading and Writing test with a C band or better. The bands have been described by The MCOLES as passing with the following percentages. A band %, B band %, C band %. Transcripts from the last 3 years of police academy students were evaluated to find out how students scored. Those who scored in the C band or with a 70-80% score were found to be those students who struggled the most academically. Most students who scored a C band had a grade point average well below a 3.0 and were close to the mandatory 70% mark in most classes. From there were only 2 licensing exam failures. Both students had scored in the C Reading and Writing band. 3. Occupational Standards high school and adult learners should possess. Students must successfully pass the MCOLES (Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards) Reading and Writing tests AND the MCOLES Physical Agility test. Students must pass an oral interview and be accepted by a 4 person interview panel before being admitted into the Police Academy. 4. Share findings from review of the high school curriculum crosswalk with the college program. In comparing the high school curriculum crosswalk, there is some redundancy in the high school program and the Police Academy. The deficiencies again were in the areas of emergency vehicle operations (police driving), investigations, fitness and technical writing. It is recommended that the KCTC program work on the basics of ethics, communication, civility and professionalism. The Programs are working together to recruit and retain students from the justice High School programs to the College program. 5. Describe the Alignment of standards to college coursework. (gap, dual enrollment, articulation). The gap analysis shows a gap in the areas of emergency vehicle operations (police driving), investigations, fitness and report writing. Specifically gaps appear to be evident in reading and writing skills, and basic physical fitness. It is recommended that mandated classes be added in these areas to address the deficiencies. A grade of 70% or greater would need to be achieved. It is also advised that the technical centers follow the articulation check list as identified by Grand Rapids Community College. GRCC Law Enforcement Dual enrollment and articulated courses are currently being offered in CJ 110 (Introduction of ) and CJ 105 (Introduction to Corrections). It appears that there is duplication in these courses. An evaluation of each course is recommended to better differentiate what is taught.
5 6. Program of Study non duplicative sequence of courses. Page 5 This Program of Study may be used by counselors, career coaches, students and parents in planning for academic success in the field of law enforcement and the Police Academy at Grand Rapids Community College. 7. External certifications earned at program completion. Students who successfully pass the MCOLES licensing exam at the completion of the Police Academy are eligible for licensing as a police officer in Michigan, once hired by a law enforcement agency. Students must pass the 200 question licensing exam within one year of the Police Academy. If the student fails, they are allowed one retest. If the 2 nd attempt is unsuccessful, the student will have to retake the Police Academy and the licensing exam.
