Miami Valley Tech Prep Consortium update Staffing Miami Valley Tech Prep Consortium was pleased to announce the following 2016 staffing additions: Katie Bauer hired as MVTPC Assistant Director/Ohio Tech Prep Southwest Regional Coordinator Josiah Wahlrab hired as Operations Specialist Nina Allen hired as Data Technician If you need to reach any of the new staff members or any part of the MVTPC team, please visit the MVTPC website and select Contact in the upper right hand corner by the search box Enrollment Student enrollment for the MVTPC as of December 1, 2015 reached 10,336 students for the school year. The number of Tech Prep students who attended Sinclair in fall 2015 numbered 3,066. This number reflects mostly junior and senior students though some of the student population is freshmen and sophomore students in PTLW programs. Web site Just a reminder that many useful documents and tools are available on the MVTPC web site. Of special interest to teachers and students are the links found under Activities and Events and Resources. The search box is also helpful in navigating the website. Many questions about the scholarship and information on the scholarship crosswalk may be found on the site. Any questions/concerns about the web site can be directed to Jess Moore. Multiple Measures for Placement update Based on a recommendation from the Completion by Design Committee, Sinclair College will continue a pilot with MVTPC to consider multiple measures for Tech Prep students who have graduated from high school and are enrolling at Sinclair. This pilot is designed to eliminate the requirement for students to take the Accuplacer assessment if they demonstrate college readiness through one of many measures, including their cumulative high school GPA. Please visit > Resources > College Readiness to access detailed information about the Multiple Measures 3.0 GPA pilot. End of year credit capture for articulated award credit Capture credit for VET 1100 (and BTN 1120 if applicable) is the same as in previous years with one small addition. Our office will send out pre populated credit capture forms for individual teachers who will complete them indicating whether or not the student passed the class with a C or better. Additionally, students must complete a credit verification form indicating whether or not they wish to have their credit(s) posted on a Sinclair transcript. Those forms will arrive prepopulated with student information, and the students must simply select an option (whether or not they want the credit posted) and sign/date the form. All forms are due June 15, 2016, and Tim Bryant is the point person for all forms. Contact him at timothy.bryant@sinclair.edu or

2 ALH 1101 Intro to Healthcare Delivery Tech Prep Vet Tech/Animal Science instructors are eligible to offer ALH 1101, a project heavy two semester hour course delivered via elearn, the Sinclair Learning Management System. It is course pre requisite for all of Sinclair s Health Sciences AAS programs. Tech Prep teachers who offered it over the school year expressed concern with the heavy grading load, largely due to the emphasis on projects, papers, discussions, etc. Unfortunately there is nothing the ALH department can do to minimize the emphasis of writing and other communication skills in the class. Though the course will largely remain the same as last year, some changes will occur in the course for fall The biggest change is the addition of a service learning project that involves interviewing an individual who is 65 years or older (who may be a family member) and completing some coordinating writing assignments. This project is set to replace the final presentation. Any Vet Tech/Animal Science teachers interested in offering ALH 1101 for the school year should contact Jess at or jess.moore@sinclair.edu for details. VET Course Liaison and VET Chair, Carolyn Worthen, DVM Carolyn Worthen was in attendance to share the following information for VET Department Updates: We are graduating 16 students on May 6 th. This is our biggest class yet, and we have high hopes for them in successfully passing the VTNE in the summer. Most of them are already working in a veterinary hospital. Accepting up to 21 students next year with three returning to complete their studies in the fall for a total of 24 students. We have a 3 year rolling average completion rate of 87%, and our goal is to have a graduating class of at least 20, so this will help us get to our goal. Curriculum has been changed only in that we are separating out components of courses to make it easier for students to retake courses if needed, and easier for students to transfer credits to higher institutions. Working with University of Findlay on determining best 2+2 pathway for students interested in Bachelor s in Pre Vet or Animal Sciences. Once this is solidified, I will be approaching West Virginia University, Wright State, and Ohio State University with similar proposals. Students will be encouraged to seek higher degrees. When the new Health Sciences building is built, we will also be able to expand our space in Building 9 to incorporate a small clinic and surgical suite that will allow us to perform preventive medicine and client education for pets of lower income families. We have already received a $20,000 grant to help us purchase equipment for the space. This clinic will not only help the community, but will also allow us to expand our techniques taught in house, and the ability to handle a larger cohort of students each year. Technical practicums and the preceptorship out in the hospitals will still continue, as there is no substitute for learning in the real world. We are developing more large animal hands on opportunities by partnering with The Ohio State Veterinary School. Our current class just visited the large animal hospital on 4/20 to observe equine and food animal surgical procedures. Future students will be spending 4 days at the clinic during the summer, working side byside with veterinary students and professionals. We will continue to have an 8 week course in large animal medicine and surgery, run by Dr. Lacey Sharp of Vet Associates of Xenia, which will continue to incorporate hands on labs working with goats and cows. Natalie Fleck will be promoted to Assistant Professor this fall, and is in the last stretch of completing her Master s Degree this spring. Carolyn Worthen was named Chair of the newly designated Veterinary Technology Department this last fall VET curriculum The Vet Tech Curriculum and 2016 Admission Policies are included at the end of the minutes. Junior/Senior Career Exploration Days We are looking to host as many Career Days in September and October as possible. Fridays work for Carolyn and her staff/students so we discussed scheduling for September 16, 23, and 30, and then looking toward October 7, 14, 21, and 28. SCCTC requested 9/23/16, WCCC requested 9/30/16, and Grant CC requested 10/7/16. MVCTC is looking at 10/14 or 10/28 as a possibility, and GCCC was not present to reserve a date. Jess will get in contact with the schools in August in order to firm up dates for the calendar.

3 ODE/Ohio Higher Education Updates CTE 26 process for FY17 CTE 26 forms for Agriculture were completed this year and due to ODE on March 1, Katie Bauer, Assistant Director/Ohio Tech Prep Southwest Regional Coordinator, was the designated MVTPC contact who provided assistance to administrators from both MVTPC partner and non partner schools in the southwest region who were tasked with submitting the forms. Medical Terminology CTAG In February 2016 teachers and administrators from MVTPC partner schools, along with Jess Moore, Katie Bauer and Carolyn Worthen had a conference call with Linda O Connor from ODE. During that conversation we requested that the ODE add Medical Terminology (ODE Course ) to the Agricultural and Environmental Systems Animal Science & Management Pathway course list, to allow students to sit for the End of Course exam, and subsequently be eligible to earn CTAG credit for Medical Terminology (provided the school earns CTAG approval), which is HIM 1101 at Sinclair. At the time of the conversation, Linda was agreeable to this proposal, but, unfortunately, there has been no movement to add Medical Terminology (ODE Course ) to the course list. Our office will continue to follow up regarding this request. In the meantime Jess Moore is exploring proficiency course option with Sinclair in the event that the ODE does not add Med Term to the course list. Any news or developments re: Med Term will be shared as they develop/unfold. Sinclair Student Services Outreach Initiatives & Incentives Onsite registration was rolled out this spring at several partner schools. This initiative was supported by Sinclair s Academic Advising Center. Any partner schools interested in doing onsite registration for seniors who wish to matriculate to Sinclair should contact Wendell Meyers at wendell.meyers@sinclair.edu. Buy One, Get One (BOGO) for summer courses at Sinclair was rolled out in late winter via blasts and mailers sent to partner schools and Tech Prep students. Details about the BOGO offer can be found here: student center/buy one get one. Tech Prep Express Registration on the Dayton campus only are scheduled for Wednesday, May 4, :00PM to 6:00PM and Wednesday, July 13, :00PM to 6:00PM. Details about all Express Registration events may be found here: College Transition Getting Ready for College 2017 is scheduled for Thursday, February 16, Scholarships packets (certificate, letter, handouts, and Getting Started check list) have already been sent to many of the partner schools for distribution. Those schools that have not yet received them should be getting their scholarship and non scholarship packets soon. Students may access Unofficial Sinclair Transcripts by following directions found on the back of the Getting Started Check List found in the packets and online here: Sinclair Career Advisors can meet with undecided students. In order to meet with an advisor, students can make an appointment by visiting this link: advising/career advising. Tech Prep Scholarship Master Crosswalk can be found online at and revisions for will take place over the summer and be posted to the same page on the MVTPC web site. University Transfer options are available to all Tech Prep students. Those degree programs are highlighted in yellow on the crosswalks. Fall Tech Prep application process MVTPC anticipates some changes for the fall 2017 application process, but details have not yet been determined. We anticipate rolling out any changes at the August 3 rd Coordinator s Meeting.

4 End of the year info capture processes Non Employee Account Request must be on file for every Tech Prep teacher who wishes to access elearn course shells. Once this form is completed it is rolled over from one year to the next on July 1. If you wish to complete a Non Employee Account Request form, contact Tim Bryant at timothy.bryant@sinclair.edu. Teacher demographic information updated for Please notify Jess Moore of any changes in teaching staff or contact information as it relates to Tech Prep teachers who fall under Vet Tech/Animal Sciences.
