2 Tech Prep Graphic Design/Interactive Media MINUTES Meeting date time 4/16/2015 8:00 AM Meeting location Building 7, Room L21 Meeting called by Type of meeting AGENDA TOPICS Jess Moore Year-end wrap-up/updates Attendees: Jeff Covey, Lori Hoover, Jared Parker, April Thies, Donita Massing, Steve Amlin, Howard Norris, Brian Shoff, Tonya Robinson Presenters: Amanda Romero, Kyle Fisk, Jess Moore Agenda topic Miami Valley Tech Prep Consortium Update Presenter Jess Moore Covered items 2.a-c on agenda. See MVTPC PowerPoint. Item 2.d College Credit Plus: MVTPC is working together with ODE, OBR and Sinclair Community College leadership to clarify CC+ initiative and TP. Tech Prep as we administer it, is not CC+ in that sense that it is articulated credit, not transcripted credit. In CC+, the students are enrolled in the class while attending high school, and receive a grade at that time. In Tech Prep, they are not. They only receive credit for the course: After they graduate When they register for an actual SCC course If/When they request the credit Therefore, our Tech Prep (as currently offered) does not meet the requirements of a 15 or 30 hour pathway. The only way we could meet the requirement is if they actually signed up for the course (like CC+), were assigned a grade (no opting in or out of having the grade count) and paid $40 per credit hour (just like CC+ courses). More information will be coming forward from Sinclair Community College leadership as we move forward with CC+. Agenda topic VIS courses/department Update Presenters Amanda Romero and Kyle Fisk Agenda item 3. Department Chair, Amanda Romero, provided handouts with the department s 2015 highlights (see attached pdf file called VIS_update_2015) and catalog information about the VIS degree and VIS courses. She and Kyle also invited Tech Prep teachers to attend the Design Portfolio Show at David H. Ponitz Sinclair Center, Bldg. 12 on April 30, 2015, 7:30-8:30 p.m. The first year assessments begin at 6:00pm, the portfolio evaluations begin at 6:30pm and the open house is from 7:30-8:30pm. For more information (937) Some of the students sharing work are former Tech Prep students! Also, Amanda and Kyle reviewed some university transfer opportunities for Sinclair VIS graduates. They are as follows: Wright State University: We have a 2+2 partnership with Wright State University s Bachelors of Fine Arts program. Their BFA degrees allow the students to supplement their Fine Arts education with a graphic design or interior design certificate. We believe the integration of 2-year and 4-year students in our upper level courses has had a positive impact on the student learning experience and success in the classroom. Franklin University: We have partnership with Franklin University. Upon graduation, our students can complete their third year at Sinclair at our low tuition rates. Their fourth year is completed at Franklin University, where they can obtain an education in graphic design, web design, mobile design, or interaction design.

3 Agenda topic BIS 1250, CIS 1350, and ANGEL to elearn Transition Presenter Jess Moore Agenda items 4.a-b. See slide 9 on the PowerPoint. The BIS 1250 course description is on the slide. See the attached pdf file called BIS_1250 for a course syllabus. If you are interested in offering this 1 semester hour course for , please contact Jess Moore jess.moore@sinclair.edu. Regretfully Mohamed Ali was unable to attend the Summit to discuss CIS 1350, but the course description can be found on slide 9. On Tuesday, May 12 from noon-3pm the Miami Valley Tech Prep Consortium and Sinclair Community College CIS Professor, Mohamed Ali, will host a half-day workshop at the Sinclair Community College main campus in the Moore Tech Center, Building 20, Room 133 for Tech Prep teachers who are interested in offering CIS What you need to know about CIS 1350: It was agreed that MVTPC would move forward with offering CIS 1350 as a new course offering beginning fall 2015 for AC (Media Arts/Visual Design and Imaging) and IT teachers who are interested in teaching it. There are no pre-requisites for CIS In order to prepare teachers to teach the course M. Ali proposed a ½ day workshop to be offered to interested HS/CTC instructors so they could learn the open source web development tool, Aptana. The current textbook for the class is titled ACP CIS 1350 with a new price of $ and used price of $ through the Sinclair Bookstore. Professor Ali had indicated that the book would not be required in order for teachers to successfully teach the class, and that there are free books online at it-ebooks.info that would be suitable substitutes. Regarding assessment and proficiency grading for the course, Professor Ali said the best way to determine student understanding of the content was for him to meet with individual students who wish to earn the proficiency-based grade (#A, #B, or #C) and assign a final project for the student to complete. Those students who demonstrate proficiency in the course will earn credit via a form that is submitted to Tim Bryant in the MVTPC office, who will then send Tartan ID #s and grades to RSR. I would like to propose that a 3-part carbonless form be developed by our office (and approved by Prof. Ali) to record the student grade with Prof. Ali s signature. Prof. Ali can keep a copy for his records, a copy can be given to the student, and the other would be submitted to the Tech Prep office. If you wish to attend the workshop to learn about the open source web development tool, Aptana and the CIS 1350 course curriculum, please RSVP to the Outlook meeting invite. Agenda items 4.c. See slides on the PowerPoint detailing the LMS transition from ANGEL to elearn at Sinclair Community College. There are self-guided learning modules for teachers to access via with a network username and password (same as used for ANGEL). Agenda topic OBR/ODE Update Presenter Jess Moore Agenda item 5.a. See PowerPoint for ODE CTE-26 Renewal Schedule (slide 12). Agenda item 5.b. See PowerPoint slide 13. There were a variety of new Interactive Media CTAGs rolled out by the OBR this winter. If MVTPC partner schools are interested in getting CTAG approved for some or all of these new CTAGs, teachers and administrators may attend the Thursday, May 14 th CTAG workshop from noon-3pm with Rob Speckert in Building 20, Room 133 on the Sinclair main campus. RSVP to Jess Moore. If attendance is not an option, the best person in the Southwest Region to contact for assistance getting high schools and CTCs CTAG-approved is Rob Speckert, CTAG/CTAN Consultant Southern Ohio Region, Miami University - Hamilton Campus, (513) , speckere@miamioh.edu, (513) (cell), (513) (home) Agenda topic Junior Career Exploration Days Presenter Jess Moore Agenda item 6.
