The communication plan Understanding the vision and what it means for patients How it affects my department How it affects me When it's happening
Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital (NSECH): 7 days a week services 24 hour consultant presence in A&E Dedicated diagnostics See a specialist much more quickly Once patient stabilised can move to a general hospital to focus on recovery and rehabilitation closer to home
Emergency Care Hospital designed to: Improve outcomes Reduce length of stay Reduce readmission rates Reduce mortality and morbidity Overall better patient care and experience!
Different departments are affected in different ways: A department may be transferred completely to the new hospital Some services across the trust will be merged together and then transferred to the new hospital Some services will remain at our local hospitals but may need to change to include a service at the new hospital Some services will remain the same but the way in which they work with other departments may change. Or a department might not change at all
Service design and OT What does this mean for OT? How do we look to develop our services? Audit and benchmarking. Best practice Guidelines and developments How are our services led and managed effectively? Wrap around service - 7 day working for OT
1.What does 7dW mean To your patients, your service and your Trust Are you planning to increase current weekend services or totally change the way your service is provided over 7 days Will you extend the working day e.g. ward based services, stroke or front of house services, will this involve different shift patterns, staff working long days etc.
1.What does 7dW mean Do you have enough staff for specialist teams at the weekend or will your weekend team be generalist Will you target a weekend service for specific patient groups or areas where there is a need for a weekend service Do you intend to improve rehabilitation at the weekend or do you want to improve your critical care services Do you aim for a true seven day service where weekend services replicate weekdays services
Benefits to patients Improved experience Increased exposure to treatment Reduced length of stay Continuity of care No loss of rehabilitation gains at the weekend Reduced admissions Early supported discharge Increased contact with carers at weekend
Benefits to staff Decreased pressure Friday afternoons and Monday mornings Increased job satisfaction due to decreased frustration around gaps in weekend services Redistributed workload over seven days Availability of therapists for ward staff is seen as a benefit Therapists can use lieu days to benefit family, personal, social activities
Collaborative partnership with the University of Ghana, Accra Background 2011 delegation from Ghana visit Northumbria Discussed support with delivery of OT degree course 2012 Team invited to Ghana March 27 th - April 2 nd 2012 meet with key stakeholders. Team invited back to Ghana September 2013 to support students on last two weeks of first six week placement.( across three hospital sites) 6 students had 6 week placement at Northumbria August 2015
