At Texas Oncology South, we were asked to work with patients in the radiation center; our services have been very well received. Thanks to the amazing efforts of our Director of Operations, Geri Ruane, OMA added 14 new oncology-trained therapists in 2014 making a total of 28 OMA therapists and still growing! In 2014, OMA provided massage to 2,815 patients and 240 caregivers and staff at the infusion/radiation locations. This brings a total of 5,811 patients and 560 caregivers and staff for which OMA has provided its services since its inception in Financially, this has been our best year yet! OMA raised a total of $24,645.17, which is over twice as much as we did in 2013! Of course, none of our accomplishments would have been possible without the generosity and compassion of our donors. With the financial support from our generous donors, the expert advice and direction from our Board, Advisory Board, and staff, along with the extraordinary massage therapists who tirelessly volunteer 1
their time, and all the heartfelt support from the public we serve, 2014 proved to be an exciting year of growth for OMA. Cancer Support Community of Central Texas and Color Cancer of Austin. And in Dallas, OMA was joined by two excellent and enthusiastic therapists, Susan Gee and Cindy Spence. OMA Therapists at the 2014 June meeting To help spread the word about oncology massage and about OMA s services, we strive to participate in at least two community outreach events every quarter. OMA s 2014 events are described below. Geri Ruane and Kazuko DeVirgilio offering chair massage OMA also participated at the February 15 th Lakeway Community Health Fair. Two board members, Yvonne Larue and Colleen Ryan, were at this event, and enjoyed meeting participants, local medical professionals and vendors, as they gave out information about OMA. OMA raised $200 for the American Cancer 2
Society and we helped spread the word about the benefits of oncology massage. May 19 th - OMA attended the Alamo Draft House event featuring the documentary Decoding Annie Parker where therapists were there to mingle and answer questions about oncology massage. Geri Ruane, Lisa Georgeson and Diane Christopherson at the State Wellness Fair Geri Ruane, Kazuko DeVirgilio, Ashley Hiatt, Susan Prins For Relay for Life - Medford, Oregon was held on May 31 st where Lisa Johnston and Gail Bailey provided free chair massages to the survivors as they walked the course. Quarter 3: Six OMA therapists travelled to Houston to attend the 10th Annual Integrative Oncology Training Conference held at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center July 18th- 20th. The OMA therapists were invited to assist the MD Anderson staff during the hands-on section of the training. Lisa Johnston at Relay for Life Medford, OR This was the second year OMA participated in the State of Texas Wellness Fair on June 5 th in downtown Austin. Approximately 800-1,000 state employees attended this wellness fair. Attending the conference; Kazuko DeVirgilio, Kelly Bien, Kerry Jordan, Geri Ruane, Madeline Brock and Susan Prins. OMA s Education Outreach (EO) committee was created in 2014 and had opportunities to 3
present interesting and pertinent information to the public. Kazuko DeVirgilio and Madeline Brock gave the first EO presentation to a group of Austin massage therapists from the Austin Massage Therapist Meet-up Group at Lauterstein- Conway Massage School on August 11th. The topics focused on OMA and oncology massage. participants were given information about OMA and OMA's therapists who have this advanced medical training. Quarter 4: On October 15, Madeline Brock gave the third EO talk about OMA and the benefits of massage therapy for cancer survivors to the physicians at Texas Oncology South. Texas Oncology Round Rock had an OMA chair massage event in October. Two OMA massage therapists provided the massages to their wonderful staff. Kazuko DeVirgilio and Madeline Brock At the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired Health Fair on August 21 st, OMA s board members, Yvonne Larue and Diane Christopherson, represented OMA while three OMA massage therapists - Susan Rader, Martha Paull, and Robin Ryece - offered hand massages so the public could feel the type of touch we give to patients. A second OMA Education Outreach event: Geri Ruane and Madeline Brock gave a presentation at the Hands Feet & Heart, Texas Chapter of the Neuropathy Association on August 25th. Madeline and Geri discussed neuropathy as well as the potential benefits of massage therapy. Reallife stories and experiences were integrated into the talk. The importance of finding a qualified massage therapist to offer this specialized service was a focus and OMA Massage Therapists at our 2014 Annual Meeting Thanks to OMA Advisory Board member, Barbara Formichelli, OMA partnered with benefitting charities during the Austin NXNW restaurant/brewpub s Oktoberfest event on October 25th-26 th. The following January, NXNW dedicated part of their proceeds from the sales of "BonsaIPA" to OMA. From both events, NXNW donated over $3,000 to OMA. We love partnering with organizations that reach out for special causes. Thank you, NXNW owner Davis Tucker and then General Manager, Curry Dodson! On November 18 th, OMA collaborated with Texas Oncology Round Rock and Midtown 4
to host Partners in Caring and Healing: A Workshop for Caregivers and People Living with Cancer. This free workshop was based upon William Collinge s DVD 1, Touch, Caring and Cancer, which demonstrates simple massage techniques for comfort and relaxation that cancer patients and their caregivers can learn and apply. Texas Oncology provided food and refreshments and OMA gave each couple a free copy of the DVD for them to use at home. This interactive workshop, guided by OMA s MTs, was well-received, and we look forward to presenting this type of workshop again. OMA therapist, Kerry Jordan, shows a husband a few simple massage techniques that he can offer to his wife. OMA was represented by Geri Ruane at the 2014 ESCAPE (Encouraging and Sustaining Cancer Advocacy Programs and Efforts) Cancer Advocacy Leadership Conference that took place at the Miraval Resort & Spa in Tucson, Arizona. This four-day retreat brought together advocates from around the country who are involved in cancer-related programs and projects. Texas Oncology Central held another holiday chair massage event for its staff, thanks to Dr. Debra Patt. This is the third year that TOC has given the gift of massage to its staff! Who We Helped in 2014 Ultimately, OMA's goal is to make oncology massage accessible to patients undergoing cancer treatments by educating therapists, the medical community, cancer patients and the general public about the benefits of massage on overall health. In order to do that, OMA helps massage therapists with financial support to acquire oncology massage training so they can confidently and safely go into treatment centers to provide free hand and foot massages to as many people undergoing chemotherapy or radiation treatments as possible. With support from our donors, in 2014 we were able to reach out to 2,815 patients, 157 caregivers, and 83 medical staff at 7 locations and with a force of 29 Practitioner and Support oncology massage therapists. We also awarded three educational stipends and had 14 Practitioner therapists working in facilities by year s end. To highlight this more clearly, the table below illustrates OMA s growth with your financial help. Year Number of Massages Number of Locations Number of OMA Therapists 1 Collinge & Associates. Touch, Caring and Cancer copyright 2009; OMA s growth over the years 5
We hope in the years to come that more medical facilities will incorporate the oncology massage services now provided by OMA. Then, with your continued donations, we can spread our message and provide services to new locations. we are very proud to show these results that attest to the growth and success we ve had in OMA 2014 Finances - What did we spend and where did funds come from? OMA received $24, in donations and fundraising efforts in 2014, more than double what we saw in the previous year! OMA Finances 2014 Total Donations $24, Corporate Donors $9, Major Individual Donors $8, General Donors $6, Total Expenditures $18, payments to Therapists $15, Operating Costs $2, Balance $6, The table above illustrates the 2014 donations totaled $24, and expenditures (that includes the administration costs for OMA) were $18, leaving a balance running into 2015 of $6, The OMA Board and Operations staff try very hard to ensure we meet our goal of providing hand and foot massages free of charge to the patient, caregiver, and medical staff in the facilities we service. As a result, The graph above shows 81% of our funding was given directly to support the OMA therapists for their time in the infusion/radiation facilities while only 19 % was used for marketing and administrative costs (no salaries are paid for administrative duties). $25, $22, $20, $17, $15, $12, $10, $7, $5, $2, $0.00 DONOR ANALYSIS BY YEAR Events Partnerships Corporate Major Individual Locations General Donors We are very proud to acknowledge that our success is directly related to the generosity of you, our Donors. Without your contributions, we could never do the work or accomplish these great results. 6
Our Outstanding Donors We are very grateful to have the support of our major donor, Texas Oncology. Their patients, caregivers, and staff have all seen the benefits from including OMA s services at their facilities. We are also very thankful to Betty Kuhl, who has been the primary supporter for Texas Oncology Midtown since the very beginning. Her wonderful son, Rob Hill, passed away in 2010 as a result of cancer treatment. Rob Hill was the inspiration behind the founding of OMA, and we are most appreciative to Betty Kuhl. When Dawn and Christopher Lissner heard of OMA s mission and purpose in 2014, they generously donated to OMA to show their support. Once again, OMA wants to thank the Lissners. The managers at NXNW Restaurant and Brewery in north Austin graciously included OMA at their Oktoberfest event, which proved to be a delightful partnership that we hope to continue every year. Our many generous donors who have helped OMA grow and succeed are listed below. GOLD DONORS ($1000 or more) Texas Oncology Betty Kuhl Dr. Debra Patt Dawn and Christopher Lissner NXNW Restaurant and Brewery SILVER DONORS ($500 or more) Mary Cooke Yvonne Larue Diane Christopherson Cruger S.
