Presbyterian Communities and Services Ministry Update November 2013 Dear PC&SF Trustees, We share our appreciation for your continued generous support. Provided here is an update on your ministry of Presbyterian Communities and Services: Presbyterian Communities and Services: The excitement and activity is quickening as we head toward the holidays. The project development teams are busy preparing for next steps in our plans for the PVN master plan and the TBP Hospice Center. During the PC&S Board and Foundation retreat, the budgets for Phase I (In-Patient Care, Spiritual Service, Training Center, and Home Care) and Phase II (Bereavement Care), along with the appropriate landscaped connections to the natural environment for each Phase were approved. The ceremonial ground breaking for the center is planned for November 19 th with a construction start date in first quarter The PVN master plan project team met with prospective lending partners and construction partners the first week of November. Our new Director of Human Development, Lee Ann Mallory, will be launching our first Leadership Development Class on November 19 th. This will be a 9 month program investing in the personal and professional development of leaders across our organization. Lee Ann s Executive Coaching experience is such an asset and gift to our ministry. New Teammates: Steve Kearney, Chief Financial Officer: Steve Kearney joins Presbyterian Communities and Services coming from Practice Support Resources, LLC where he served from 2011 to 2013 as its Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer. Prior to that, Steve was with Jefferson Wells International where he managed the finance & accounting consulting practice for the Dallas-Ft. Worth market from 2005 to From 2002 to 2004, he was Vice President, Controller and Chief Accounting Officer of Assisted Living Concepts, Inc., a public company that operated 177 assisted living residences nationwide. Barbara Matamoros, PC&S Director of Sales & Marketing: Barbara has over 25 years marketing healthcare related services with 13 of those years with Greystone
communities where she was directly responsible for occupancy development and sales activities for new and existing continuing care retirement communities across the country. Prior to 1998, Barbara worked for Cornerstone Health Management and had responsibility for marketing and operational support of hospital-based geriatric specialty programs across the United States. With an emphasis on Geriatric Psychiatric programs and Senior Health centers, Barbara has experience in the areas of community and healthcare-based referral management, sales and customer service training and regulatory compliance. Dr. Ona Nwosu, Medical Director Faith Presbyterian Hospice: Dr. Ona Nwosu completed a hospice and palliative medicine fellowship at UTSW Dallas in June Before then, she worked as a hospitalist for the Inpatient Consultants of Texas (IPC) in Houston for 6 years. While working for IPC, she covered the Vitas Inpatient unit at Memorial Hermann Memorial City Hospital as a hospice physician. Dr. Nwosu completed her residency in Internal Medicine at the Columbia University affiliated Harlem Hospital Center in New York. Her clinical experience is vast, and includes general practice in Nigeria after graduating from the University of Nigeria - College of Medicine. Dr. Nwosu is board certified in Internal Medicine and Hospice and Palliative Medicine. Holli Grier, Executive Assistant to Godwin Dixon: Holli Grier joins Presbyterian Communities and Services with over 25 years experience providing administrative support to senior executives. Holli is coming from Evergreen Alliance Golf Limited where she supported the President and CEO and four, SVP of Operations.
Faith Presbyterian Hospice - FPH At FPH we transitioned the Executive Director and brought the leadership of the program back under Cindy Douglas, Vice President of Clinical Program Development. The program has fallen back in census and quality outcomes this past quarter. However the FPH Leadership Team continues to rebound together and is determined to bring the program back to the level of growth and quality that we are accustomed to. FPH co-sponsored speaker/author of hospice resources Gone from my Sight at two functions. She spoke at Senior Source in September and Baylor University Medical Center. FPH had its 1st annual Camp Faith on September 29th at Spring Hill Retreat (a ministry of Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church). Camp Faith was made possible by the generous Grant from Highland Park Presbyterian Church. The campers arrived around noon and enjoyed a lunch by the lake followed by indoor and outdoor activities. Invitations were sent to all families of Faith Presbyterian Hospice patients who had children and the camp was attended by 7 children, representing five (5) families and assisted by 25 volunteers.
For the 5th year in a row, Brad Sopa, worked tirelessly to create and host a fundraiser to benefit hospice. Brad s Dad enjoyed working on and restoring cars. He died several years ago on hospice in Florida and since then Brad has held this car show to honor his father s memory and to give back to hospice care. We are lucky enough to be his annual beneficiary! This year we were gifted $3043. Brad was honored this year as a recipient of the Each Moment Matters Award. Presbyterian Village North - PVN PVN has submitted Phase One of the Master Plan to the City of Dallas and has presented the plan to the residents. A panel of experts was gathered to present the plan to the PVN residents, including Dan Lindh and Al Black from Pres Homes in Minnesota, our Architects, Mike Wright and Godwin Dixon. The meeting was well attended and many questions were answered. The questions asked by the residents indicated a real sense of ownership for the plan. Generally, there seems to be a positive attitude about the improvements that will be coming, especially regarding the potential additions of the Lifestyle Fitness Center, Aquatic Center, and the Chapel. These areas were presented to the residents as philanthropic opportunities. We are hopeful that the financing will close in time for demolition and construction to begin in April or May of next year. The relocation of residents in preparation for Phase One of the Master Plan has gone very well. Several residents have made the move and
we are anticipating that everyone might be relocated by November 15th. We also plan to refresh some of the areas of the existing living areas to ensure we are providing attention to our current resident needs. Funding for Lifestyle Fitness Center (Wellness Center) and Great Room Renovation We have had very positive preliminary conversations with the PVN Foundation about the possibility of funding the Lifestyle Fitness Center and the Great Room renovation. Ron Kelly presented the renderings from Pi Architects and informed the PVN Board at its September meeting that the job would be bid in October, allowing us to get specific costs for each project. Once these costs are obtained, an actual grant request will be provided to PVNF in November. Their next meeting will be in December. The total grant request will be approximately $4 M. Joyce Hall teammates and residents hosted receptions of their beautiful new home; Friends and Family night, PVN Resident Reception and PC&S Leadership Reception. Total attendees were over 260. Grace Presbyterian Village GPV: Notable Developments At GPV, Mark Lenhard has transitioned from Executive Director role to a PC&S role as Executive Director of Project Development. His role will support operations in the many organizational construction projects as well as operational initiatives that promote growth of our financial and clinical outcomes. His successor is new Executive Director John Berkely. John Berkely was born and raised in New Castle, PA where he worked with his father in his grocery business until his father's retirement. He joined the US Navy and served 4.5 years as a cryptologist and upon discharge enrolled at Penn State University. His chosen course of study was Health Policy and Administration and graduated with high honors. John was hired by ManorCare Health Services for a position in San Antonio where he worked for seven years in several retirement communities. John moved back east for a few years and was hired by Lutheran Social Services where he eventually managed the entire senior services programs. Overall, John has 19 years experience in working with seniors in various retirement settings. We are blessed to have both Mark and John on the team.
Grace Presbyterian Village residents and teammates had the wonderful opportunity of hosting the 1st Presbyterian Church Dallas annual youth day camp. This unique intergenerational program connects 4th and 5th graders with older adults and provides our residents the opportunity to teach children their talents and gifts. During the 5-day camp children learned how to knit, play guitar and cook from some very experienced teachers- our residents. Grace teammates joined in the fun by sharing about their job responsibilities and working with older adults. Oak Cliff Presbyterian Church sponsored our recent Healthcare Resident Birthday Celebration. Rehab and long-term care residents were able to enjoy a wonderful menu prepared by our dining services team. Individual gifts were provided by Oak Cliff Presbyterian Church. Family members are invited each month to attend with their loved ones. The July celebration had 5 generations of family members celebrating with our resident of honor.
One of the joys that the Grace community has experienced this quarter has been the welcoming of our Pastoral Intern, Cara Ellis. Cara is a student at SMU Perkins School of Theology. On August 12, a reception was held to introduce Cara to the community. This community has welcomed Cara and Cara has brought her gifts of pastoral care, preaching, and fun personality to Grace. Cara will continue her ministry here until May This relationship between Grace, Perkins and Cara has been a true blessing. We are so thankful for the generous $50k gift from FPC and additional donation from the Bates, which has allowed GPV to be able to renovate and update the Wellness Center This center has become the hub of healthy activity with a significant volume of residents as well as staff taking the opportunity to participate in fun exercise, the spa as well as the coffee bar.
On behalf of the PC&S teams, I thank you for your generous gift of time and support. Respectfully submitted, Brenda Terry, Chief Operating Officer, Presbyterian Communities and Services
