Class Credits: 3 Instructor bford@germanna.edu Course Description: Covers computer concepts and Internet skills and use a software suite, which includes word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation software to demonstrate skills required for computer literacy. Lecture 3 hours per week. Additional Course Description: The course is intended to provide a basic understanding of computer concepts and common application software to support the computer competency requirement No computer experience is assumed, and no mathematics beyond high school is required. Emphasis will be placed on providing the student with a working foundation in word processing, electronic spreadsheets, presentation software, database software, and a general understanding of computer concepts and operating systems. The course is will use the software package of Microsoft Office, and the operating system Microsoft Windows 7( Windows 8 will also be covered but the college computers have Windows 7 installed). Microsoft Office includes Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, and Microsoft Access. We will be using Office 2013 version. Learning Outcomes:
2 Upon completing the course, the student will be able to: Describe basic computer concepts and components. Demonstrate the use of communications and networking technology Describe the major operating system functions and demonstrate usage of operating system services to include: disk management, file management, and memory management. Demonstrate the use of word processing software to create, modify, and format documents. Demonstrate the use of spreadsheet software to create, modify, format spreadsheets and perform what if analysis. Demonstrate the use of database management software to create and query a database. Demonstrate the use of presentation graphics software to create, modify, and format a presentation. Major Topics to be Included Basic computer concepts and components. Communications and networking technology Major operating system functions Word processing application software. Spreadsheet software. Database management software. Presentation graphics software. Textbook and Supplies: Microsoft Office 2013 Introductory, Vermaat, Cengage Learning, ISBN: Go to the online college campus bookstore for information. In addition you will require a USB flash drive (pen) of at least 1GB in size to store your files and work. Additional Attendance/Withdrawal Policy for this course: It is the responsibility of the student to meet the requirements for attendance. You cannot make up a missed lecture. I do not withdraw students but student may receive an F if they exceed the number of allowed appetences. Please refer to the policy in the student handbook or in Part B of this outline. Academic Dishonesty Course Specific I follow the college policy for academic dishonesty. Please refer to the student handbook and the Academic Policy section listed in Part B of this Outline. Basically students found cheating will receive a Zero grade for that work and I will formally report the matter to the Dean for additional action.
3 Course Plan for College Closing : If the college is closed or the instructor does not hold class for whatever reason it is the student responsibility to check on Blackboard for any posted information and/or assignments. Electronics (e.g. Cell Phones) /Food Classroom Policy: If the class meets in a classroom for its scheduled meetings students are to turn off or set silent all cell phones and devices. There is no food or drinks permitted in the classroom. You are not to use the computers during class time for personal or other social media such as Facebook or chat rooms. Computers are to be used only for class work. Grading Policy and Grading Scale: Grades are weighted using the following percentages. (the total points found under MyGrades in Blackboard are not used to calculate your grades) There are 2 tests, and a final exam. s, Quizzes and other assignments will be given, as instructor deems valid. Quizzes are normally given after each chapter. Most chapters include 2 labs. Following is the weighted criteria: Test 1 = 10% Test 2 = 10% Final Exam = 15% s, Quizzes, and all other assignments = 65% Grading scale: A = B = C = D = F = 59 0 Introduction to Computer Applications and Concepts Germanna Community College - Tentative Course Activities & Assignments Individual assignments and due dates are posted on Blackboard. Instructor must complete form with specific details relative to the course or activity. Words bracketed by parentheses indicate need for course specific information. Completed, signed forms are required for all off-campus activities. Originals are submitted to Campus Security and copies to Dean s Office. Faculty should retain a copy as well. No student can participate in the course or course activity without submitting
