1 Differential Equations Department of Mathematics College of Southern Nevada MATH 285 Section 2001 Fall 2015 TR 9:30 AM-10:50 AM Cheyenne S 134 Instructor: Dr. Jennifer Gorman Office: Cheyenne S 143-D Office Phone: (702) Office Hours: M: 12:05pm-1:15pm in my office (S 143-D) TR: 12:05pm-2:00pm in my office(s 143-D) or by appointment Prerequisite: Math 182 with a grade of C or better. Course Description: Theory and techniques for constant and variable coefficient ordinary linear differential equations. Also included are a number of non-linear types of ordinary differential equations. Emphasis will be on those differential equations arising from modeling real world phenomena. Course Objectives: Learn how to apply separation of variable techniques and variation of parameters to solve a variety of real word-type problems. Apply numerical solution techniques, including the Runge-Kutta methods, error-analysis and direction fields. May include a number of required computer lab assignments. Be able to solve a variety of linear first-order equations using real and complex Eigenvalues, variation of parameters, and matrix exponential techniques. Learn to apply techniques for homogeneous and non-homogeneous equations, reduction of order, constant coefficients. Apply techniques such as the superposition and annihilator approach. Understand and use the Laplace Transform, inverse transform, translation on the s- axis, and transform on the t-axis Text: We will be using A first course in Differential Equations; 10th Edition; by: Dennis G. Zill. 1

2 Calculators: You are allowed to use a calculator in this course. I recommend that you have a graphing calculator. If you own a device that you can install apps on there are a fair amount of good graphing calculator apps. You are welcome to use one of these during class. There will be some tests and quizzes where a graphing calculator will not be allowed. You CANNOT use one of these devices(iphone, ipad, ipod, cell phone, smart watch, etc.) as a calculator on a test. Evaluation/Grading: Homework: Math is NOT a spectator sport! To be good at it you must practice! Every section will have homework. Homework problems will be given out of the textbook. Homework will be collected once a week on Tuesdays. Three random problems will be graded for correctness at a value of 2 points a piece. 4 points will be given for completion of the non-graded problems. Thus each homework assignment will be out of 10 points. Projects: There will be real world modeling application projects given during the semester. More information about the project requirements will be given with the projects. Tests: There will be two tests during the semester: The tentative dates for the tests are September 22nd and October 27th. Tests may be comprised of both in class and take home parts. Make-up tests will only be given in extenuating circumstances, where the instructor is notified BEFORE the test. A student must make arrangements with the instructor for the Make-up test and the test must be completed within a timely fashion but no longer than a week of the original test date. Make-up tests may be significantly harder than the original. Final Exam: There will be a comprehensive final exam. The final exam is tentatively Wednesday December 9th. Your grade will be calculated as follows: The grading scale is: Homework 20% [90, 100] A Projects 10% [89-90) B+ Tests 40%(20% each) [80-89) B Final Exam 30% [79-80) C+ [70-79) C [60-70) D [0-60) F All grades will be rounded to the nearest tenth of a point. W Grades: As per CSN policy I WILL NOT and CAN NOT give a W grade at the end of the semester. It is the responsibility of the student to withdraw him/herself before the 2

3 drop date. The last day to drop a class is October 30, Attendance: Although attendance is not required at every class it is highly recommended. Attending class maximizes your success in this course. If you miss a class it is YOUR responsibility to find out what was missed. Make up tests and quizzes will only be given in extenuating circumstances. If you miss a test or quiz you must contact the professor within 24 hours. Failure to do so will result in a 0 for the test or quiz grade. The make-up must be taken within one week of the original test. Students should note that make-up tests and quizzes may be substantially harder than the original test/quiz. Resources: Students who find themselves falling behind in class should come and speak to me as soon as they feel themselves falling behind. CSN provides free tutorial services for students through the Centers for Academic Success(For more information visit There are also Math Resource Centers on each campus: Charleston: K 406; Cheyenne: 2651; Henderson C 119. Cell Phones: Please turn all cell phones to vibrate before coming to class and put them away so they are not vibrating on the desk throughout class. If you must answer a call please leave the classroom to do so. It is rude and disrespectful to talk/text/surf the web/check facebook/ect. in class. Continued use of a cell phone in class may result in the student being asked to leave. Disruptive Students: Students will be respective of their fellow students and refrain from behavior that is disruptive to their fellow classmates. Continually disruptive students will be asked to leave. CSN s disruptive student policy can be found at Academic Integrity: Scholastic dishonesty will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent. You are expected to have read and understood the CSN Academic Integrity Policy at Please be aware that the use of unauthorized devices during tests/quizzes is not allowed and constitutes a violation of academic integrity, this includes but is not limited to the use of phones and or smart watches. Disability Awareness: If you have a documented disability that may require assistance, you should contact a campus Disability Resource Center. The Resource Center phone numbers are as follows: West Charleston Campus Disability Resource Center , Cheyenne Campus Disability Resource Center , Henderson Campus Disability Resource Center CSN s ADA policy can be found at Student s Rights: Students rights and responsibilities pertaining to CSN policies and services can be found in the College Catalog and on the CSN website Libraries: The libraries offer many workshops that may or may not pertain to this class throughout the semester. The schedule can be found at or by calling for more information. 3
