1 CA252: Spreadsheet Applications Syllabus Professor: Office Location: Office Phone: Office Hours: Course Information Semester: Class time: Course CRN: Class location: CATALOG DESCRIPTION: Provides study in the creation, design, and use of spreadsheets for business applications. Emphasis focuses on formatting and enhancing spreadsheets, maintaining workbooks, working with lists, using appropriate functions, interpreting data, and template design. 3 semester hours. Course Prerequisite: CA 120 or successful completion of the department skills assessment. TEXTS/MATERIALS (Required): Microsoft Office Excel 2010, Comprehensive Edition: 11, Authors: June Jamrich Parsons, Dan Oja, Roy Ageloff, and Patrick Carey, Publisher: Course Technology, ISBN: This book is available at the Rockville Campus bookstore for $ or as an online ebook (with 6 months access) for $54.99: File Storage: Be advised our computers WIPE CLEAN the hard drive when the machine is restarted, so the C: drive or My Documents folder is NOT a wise place to store your work. You should store your work on a flash drive, and you may keep back-up copies of work in progress in the My Files section of our Blackboard site (I will not grade or access files stored here; this location is just for your convenience as a backup.). Software: The software used in this course is Excel Other versions of MS Office will not be an exact match for the procedures in our book and on our exams. If you do not own this version of the software, you may need to use College lab facilities to do your work. 2 OBJECTIVES: By the end of the course, the student will be able to: Non-technical skills Development and enhancement of electronic spreadsheet software Save spreadsheets for web use Format spreadsheet data Create and apply ranges to data Use functions and solve mathematical problems Use charts Manage Data Macros Import and export data Templates Multiple workbooks Speak and write about the course topics with sufficient proficiency Apply critical thinking to a variety of topics in the course Explain the purpose of electronic spreadsheet software and its application to solve common business problems Save spreadsheets as HTML files Modify cell size and alignment Apply general numbers formats Apply formats and create custom formats Apply outlines Use styles, conditional formatting, and autoformats Create and name ranges Clear and format ranges Copy and move ranges Integrate range names Use AVERAGE, MAX, MIN, LOOKUP, PMT, IF functions Use worksheet and date functions Use the Scenario Managers Use the Goal Seeker and the Solver Create, format, modify, preview and print charts Sort and query data from a list Check and review data Find specific cells and formulas Find errors and Extract data Use filters and data validation Perform multi-level sorts Create, record, edit and run macros Import data from and export data to other applications Create, modify, and utilize templates Link and use multiple workbooks GRADING: Attendance/Participation 15% Homework Assignments 25% (lowest grade will be dropped)

3 Quizzes 25% Midterm Exam 15% Final Project 20% Course Grade: <59=F, 60-69=D, 70-79=C, 80-89=B, 90=A CLASS ATTENDANCE/PARTICIPATION: Students are expected to attend all class sessions. In the case of absence, it is the student s responsibility to get class material/work assignments from the course Blackboard site or other class members. You will be responsible for all work assigned whether you are present or absent. Course notes, announcements, and sample files will be stored on the website. Check the notes regularly, as you are responsible for all information in them, whether you were in class or not. Students who miss more than three hours of class may be dropped from the course by the instructor. Students are expected to spend class time working on activities for this class. Use of the Internet shall be strictly limited to activities for this class. Behavior that impedes the learning of others or failure to participate in class activities will cause your attendance/participation grade for that day to be reduced. Class begins promptly at the scheduled time. Students are expected to be on time, return promptly from breaks, and remain until the end of class. If you miss more than five minutes of class, your attendance/participation grade for that day will be reduced. ASSIGNMENTS/QUIZZES/EXAMS Information about assignments, quizzes, and exams will be posted on our course Blackboard site. Check the site at least once a week to be sure you are up to date. Due Dates: All assignments are due at the beginning of class on the due date, both on paper AND attached to the assignments page in the course Blackboard site. Any papers handed in must contain your name and be stapled in order. No folders, please. Late assignments: After an assignment is due, if you did not have a DOCUMENTED, legitimate emergency, you will lose points for late submission as shown below: If you turn in: You lose this percent of your grade: Up to 24 hours late days late days late days late days late 40 More than 7 days late No credit Keeping Your Work: DO NOT throw away any graded work until you have received your official grade in MyMC at the end of the semester. Leave your submissions in the Blackboard

4 assignments page until the semester is over. In the event of any dispute or question, if you do not have the graded copy of the work, I will simply have to assume that whatever I recorded in my gradebook is correct. Missed Quizzes/Exams: In the case of legitimate, documented emergencies, the instructor may, at her discretion, offer a make-up. If no documentation is available, and the instructor does permit a make-up, you will automatically lose 20% on the grade of that quiz or exam. TUTORING You are encouraged to use the free tutoring in HU320 provided by faculty and contracted tutors of the Computer Applications Department. Hours of availability can be found online by clicking TUTOR SCHEDULE at POLICY ON ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: Unless a project has specifically been assigned as a group activity, you are expected to do your own work. All computer work must be done with your own hands. You may ask other students or tutors to advise you or demonstrate a process for you in a separate file, but you must do all file creation and editing YOURSELF. Any occurrence of academic dishonesty, including copying others work, copying assignments off the Internet, submitting someone else's work, plagiarism, or letting another student copy or submit your work, or any violation of the Code of Conduct will result in a zero for that assignment as well as an automatic 10-point reduction of your total semester grade. If you do not check this account at least twice weekly, you should set up the account to forward messages to your more regularly-read account. To avoid problems with viruses, worms, and spam, I do not open messages with blank or vague subject lines. College Closure or Emergency Alerts Occasionally it becomes necessary to delay the opening of school, send students home early, or close the College entirely because of bad weather.
