1 Knight Times Monthly Newsletter of the Great 799 March 2015 Volume 112, Issue 3 Dallas Council 799 Knights of Columbus Shoreview Road Dallas, Texas Chaplain s Message By Fr. Josef Vollmer-König Dear Brother Knights, The season of Lent is a time of change. It is a special time to prepare to celebrate the resurrection of our Lord. As Catholics we are asked to fast. What are we fasting from- food, drink, noise, gossip, or just busyness? The fast should help us to discipline ourselves in order to lead a more spiritual life. We are asked to pray. Prayer is more listening to God through spending time in and with Sacred Scripture, rather than talking. Prayer needs to be a part of our everyday life. This time should help us to draw closer to God. We are asked to give alms, sharing the blessings we receive from God with the less fortunate sisters and brothers among us. It is the hope that the good practices we develop during this holy season become part of our everyday life and increase our relationship with God. The disciplines of Lent remind me of the time I spent with the physical therapist before my knee surgery. This therapy was designed to help me to get rid of bad habits and develop good ones. Lent is a season of soul-searching and repentance. It is a season for reflection and taking stock. Lent originated in the very earliest days of the Church as a preparatory time for Easter, when the faithful rededicated themselves and when converts were instructed in the faith and prepared for baptism. By observing the forty days of Lent, the individual Christian imitates Jesus withdrawal into the wilderness for forty days. Blessings Fr. Call our Field Agents: Last Names A-L Marc Newhouse (972) (469) cell Last Names M-Z John Shaver (817) (214) cell Grand Knight s Letter By John Guerra Dear Brother Knights: This newsletter is going out late. Please accept this better late than never attempt to keep you informed about activity at our Council. Member dues are vital to the operation of our Council. Not only do they fund our activities and our Charity account, the dues help us pay our obligations to higher levels of the Order. The per capita tax is paid to State and Supreme Councils based on the number of members on our roster. This is good, because this allows our Council to support the charitable mission of our Order. But when a Member fails to pay his dues, it puts our Council in a situation where we deplete our Charity Fund to cover the Member s portion of the per capita tax. For the past two months, I have made an effort to get as many Knights as possible to pay their dues. This month we are launching a phone calling campaign. Starting in April, we will begin the process to drop Members who have not paid dues. At the March meeting, we also reviewed the deadlines that were enacted last fall (and which have been widely publicized). Knights who have paid their Council dues by March 31 will be eligible for a reduced family pool membership. Knights who are delinquent on that date will be subject to an additional late fee, essentially paying a higher pool rate. Assuming you pay your Council dues by March 31, your pool application can be submitted without late fee before April 30. The final, final, final date to get your pool application submitted is May 15. Anyone not aware of these dates can refer to the previous several newsletters and their pool application paperwork they received in the mail. Thank you for your support of the Council and for helping us achieve our goal of 100% of dues paid. Fraternally, John Guerra, GK Sisters' Appreciation Dinner Recap We hosted the Paul Bagley/Cardy Vance Sisters' Appreciation Dinner on February 15. It is a long-time tradition at KC 799 and our small way of saying thank you to the Sisters of our diocese. We served the Sisters a four-course taste of Italy, prepared by a professional chef. We also distributed gift baskets, flowers, goody bags and gift cards. We would like to thank the following volunteers: Chef Nick Pavageaux (Kozy) Azzurra Pavageaux Jason Gordon Amy Stuart John Stuart Susan Hill Mike Hill John Little Pat Vlk Terry Vlk Lynn Daniel Sonya Hanna Jen Widhelm Sandy Kubelka Heidi Gerst Steve Fox Colleen Fox Jennifer Collier Amy Vitek Erika Estrada Tina Galvan Tim Rogers Lisa O'Brien Kristi Files Jeff Vance Andy Ellard Jim Schuldenberg Tim Brennan Sergio Zarate Bobbie Taylor Thomas and Ann Kelton (hosts) Knights of Columbus - Dallas Council 799 Page 2

Fourth Degree Exemplification The Fourth Degree of the Knights of Columbus was founded in 1900 as the highest degree of our Order. The Fourth Degree is about Patriotism, promoting good Catholic citizenship, supporting programs to promote learning the rich history of our country and providing support for those serving in our military services. The Father Abram J. Ryan Assembly, chartered April 6, 1914, is the Fourth Degree assembly assigned for Council 799 members, and we share a long association with the Council. To join, you must have made your First Degree, have attained the Major Degrees and are a Brother Knight in good standing with your council - i.e., your dues are current. The Spring Exemplification will be held the weekend of April 11, 2015 in Palestine, Texas. Please contact Jim Hale with any questions. 4 KofC Insurance Spotlight Ask Eligible Men to Join Today, I want to address the growth of the Order. Membership growth is the fuel that keeps this great fraternal engine running. All of our charitable works at the council, state, national and international level are thanks to our hard-working members. And more members equals more charity. We know that the membership blitz is a tried and true way for councils to get more men to join. We see these pushes often in March, in celebration of Founder s Day, and again in October. These drives are successful because brother Knights have increased visibility speaking or presenting during and after Masses and at special events. We must remember that we have a duty to ask each and every Catholic gentleman to join our ranks for the good of the Church, the community and the Order. During the rest of the year, we often forget to ask men to join and to bring their families into the Knights of Columbus family. You probably know an eligible Catholic man you could ask today. What if the only reason he hasn t joined is because no one has asked him yet? When telling a prospect about the strengths of the Order, don t forget our greatest fraternal benefit: our insurance program. This is often a selling point to a potential member who is on the fence. Many members become Knights simply to be able to buy coverage to protect their family. Soon after, they realize the good our charitable works do for their community, and they are proud to be members. As your professional Knights of Columbus insurance agent, I look forward to helping us grow in fraternity in any way that I can. KayCee Club Website John Shaver FIC Marc Newhouse John.Shaver@kofc.org Marc.newhouse@kofc.org Visit the KayCee Club s new website at Check out the new look and get information on the pool or on Club hall services or rentals. KayCee Club Pool News By now all pool members and new Knight s should have received the pool paper work to renew your pool membership. If you have not received your paperwork, it is available in the office during business hours. The deadline to submit your pool paper work and payment is May 15th. Pool registrations will NOT be accepted after this date. A reminder that Knights who wish to sign up for the pool, MUST have their Council 799 dues paid by March 31st. Please do not delay in getting your dues paid, the end of the month will be here before you know it. If you pay your Council 799 dues by March 31st, the pool dues are $200. If you procrastinate and pay your dues after the deadline, but before May15th, your pool dues are $300. Diocesan Corporate Communion Bishop Farrell will host the Diocesan Corporate Communion this coming Saturday, March 7th at 10 am at the Cathedral downtown (2215 Ross Ave, Dallas TX 75201). The word corporate refers to a united group, and the Corporate Communion is an opportunity to bring all Knights together to demonstrate unity for the celebration of the Mass and Eucharist. We would love to see many Knights from Council 799 in attendance. This is also a great opportunity for you to bring the family to hear more about the great work the KC does for our Dioceses.
