The integration of the real music industry into these workshops gave a fantastic insight into careers and opportunities that are readily available to our students when looking at life after education. This event was beneficial to everyone involved and even made me staff member of the week for not crashing the timetable! 3 What we offer: Workshops: To be delivered by Sam Robson who has a back ground in this type of out reach work and has up to date knowledge and experience of the music industry and careers development. Workshops to be assisted by artists and crew members to achieve maximum enrichment. Personal Tutoring: The students can be separated into different groups with particular skills sets for example drums, piano, guitar, bass, vocals, keyboard etc. This will end with a piece of music being learnt and a final ensemble performance involving the whole class. Work Experience: Students who are interested in what happens back stage are invited to our "Sound Engineering Class" where our crew talk to them about life on the road, tips & tricks when behind the scenes and the importance of a sound check. Student Relations: Many of the students have commented on the influences we are able to bring to the table when both talking and working with young musicians. This is often due to the average age of our artists being early 20 s, therefore allowing students to relate to them further and more effectively, whilst realising how much they have accomplished over such a short amount of time. Live Performance: The day usually ends with an entertaining PowerPoint from the Sam Robson highlighting possible career outcomes for the students futures, (music related or not). This is followed by a minute performance from artist attending.
4 A typical day: Arrival: Arrive early morning to meet & greet students and select work experience students for the day if agreed by the school. Load In: Crew sound check stage, lighting and seating for live performance, preparation for any necessary workshops as well as assess health and safety on stage. Music Introduction: Students in music lessons are introduced to the artist, the music industry and life on the road as well as offer careers advice and any tips for the future. Relevant Curricular Workshops: Workshops can be planned and delivered to meet school interest and specialism. The most popular workshops consist of the following: 1. Ensemble Workshop: Students can be arranged in smaller groups to work with the band members in creating an ensemble piece to perform to the other groups or as a class. 2. Sound Engineering workshop: Music Students are invited to attend a short master class in stage sound and sound checking at a specific point in the day. 3. Performance workshop: Students will have the opportunity to work in depth with the band and crew to refine their live performance and work specifically on many aspects such as sound, stage presence, positioning, image etc.
5 Performance: Each school date will consist of a live performance from the artist in either a lunch time or lesson. This show will generally be between 30 and 45 minutes long but can include a school warm up act if beneficial to the school. This show not only raises aspirations for the students involved but also provides a fantastic example of the day s work in action including crew, a top live act, sound engineers and - in the case of a band - around 10,000 worth of music equipment.
