3 High School Liaison at Bury College The Bury College High School Liaison Team has been established for over 11 years and works with approximately 3500 Year 9, 10 and 11 students on an annual basis. We are closely associated with high schools in Bury, Rochdale, Bolton, Manchester and Lancashire. Each school is allocated a Bury College school link person, whose primary role is to act as a direct point of contact for support, advice and guidance. How we support you Bury College school link staff take an active role in a variety of school-related activities, including presentations to year groups, drop-in sessions, parents' evenings and careers events. We currently offer an extensive range of presentations and school talks which can be tailor-made to suit your school s needs, including presentations to help students and their parents think about career planning and motivate them to achieve. See page 3 for further details. 01
4 Master classes, tours and tasters Each year our programme of activities continues to grow. This year we are delighted to announce that we have included additional bespoke tours in our already extensive range as well as a Master Class in Humanities. All of the activities are designed to challenge, excite and motivate pupils and encourage them to look into the various avenues that may lead to their chosen career. Delivered primarily at the Bury College Campus, sessions are free of charge and can be tailor-made to suit your school s timetable and fulfil any specific curriculum needs. 6 Activities Talks and tours The Bury College presentation This careers orientated presentation is designed to help your Year 11 pupils understand the options available to them when they leave school. The talk focusses on A Levels, Vocational courses and Apprenticeships in addition to showcasing the excellent opportunities available at Bury College. Year 11 pupils. Class size up to full year groups minutes. (Please note priority deadline for applications to Bury College is 23rd November). Understanding Apprenticeships Delivered by the Bury College Apprenticeship team, this informative presentation answers any questions your pupils may have about the Apprenticeship pathway. Year 10 and 11 pupils considering studying an Apprenticeship. Class size up to full year groups minutes. 04
7 Exam preparation and revision techniques This presentation and interactive workshop addresses your pupils exam concerns and prepares them for the busy time ahead. Pupils will uncover essential stress relieving techniques and take part in memory games to boost overall performance. Year 10 and 11 pupils preparing for exams. Average class size minutes. Be the Best Preparing to study at college The transition from high school to college can be a very daunting prospect for some pupils. This helpful talk introduces your pupils to our Be the Best pre-entry website which hosts information, tips and advice on how to prepare for studying at college. Year 10 and 11 pupils. Class size up to full year groups minutes. Future focus This presentation is designed to give pupils an opportunity to think about career planning and motivate them to achieve in school. It can also be delivered as an event for pupils and their parents, helping them to work with you in supporting their children as they think about their future. Year 9, 10 or 11 students (and parents). Class size up to full year groups. 60 minutes. 05
8 Bury College tours Bespoke tours of the campus and curriculum areas are available for all pupils. As well as showing you the outstanding facilities, we can arrange for your pupils to talk to the curriculum staff, meet the students and have all of their questions answered. All age groups. Individual tours, average class sizes, up to full year groups minutes. Master classes and taster sessions - A Level: Master class in Biology The Biology taster session is aimed at students seeking to explore the various aspects of the subject. It provides insight into some of the techniques used in modern-day Biological Science. A range of activities are offered and may include: immobilisation of algae, genetic fingerprinting or a forensic investigation. Year 11 pupils interested in studying Biology at AS Level. 15 pupils per session. 1.5 hours. June
9 Master class in Chemistry Building chemicals is not a random process. A study of Chemistry allows research scientists to plan how to make novel compounds. As part of this session pupils will conduct experiments and learn how to synthesise and purify a compound. Pupils will study how much of a chemical is present in a sample, and if it is contaminated. They will also be introduced to determining the quality and the quantity of samples. Year 11 pupils interested in studying Chemistry at AS Level. 15 pupils per session. 1.5 hours. June Master class in Computing There has never been a better time to be involved with computing. Computing is about the understanding and automation of problem solving. This session gives pupils a chance to delve into the inner workings of the computer and understand how the logic gates at the heart of the computer operate. Year 10 pupils interested in studying Computing at AS Level. Please contact the High School Liaison team to book your school on the next available date. 07
10 Master class in Humanities At Bury College we offer AS and A Levels in History, Geography, English Language, English Literature and English Language and Literature combined. Our master classes offer an insight into what to expect whilst studying at Bury College, the type of activities pupils can expect to be involved in and a chance to speak to our subject specialists about A Level Humanities. Year 8, 9 or 10 pupils. 20 pupils per session. Master class in Law Rules and regulations shape our everyday society. During this master class pupils will gain an insight into how law enforcement agencies, such as the police and courts, apply these laws. The session will involve an interactive and topical programme of teaching. Year 10 and 11 pupils considering a career in the legal profession and legal related employment. 08
11 Master class in Modern Foreign Languages This is an exclusive opportunity for budding linguists to sample Bury College s state-of-the-art language lab. Currently available in French, German and Spanish, these specialised tasters offer a genuine insight into the interactive teaching style at the college. Year 9, 10 and 11 Gifted and Talented pupils considering studying a Modern Foreign Language at college. Master class in Psychology This is an opportunity for pupils to learn about how perception occurs and how memory works (including tips to help revision). Pupils will also participate in a small scale Psychology experiment, following similar criteria to GCSE Science experiments, which encourage them to think about experimental design and control. They will leave the session with information on careers in Psychology, giving them a goal to aim for in terms of GCSE and A Level. Year 9 or 10 pupils considering studying Psychology at college. 12 Master class in Sociology As a society we are fascinated by crime. We read crime books, watch crime on TV and read about crime in the newspapers. This is an exciting opportunity for pupils who are interested in studying Sociology at college to gain an insight into the sociology of crime and deviance. Sessions aim to be fun, interactive and informative and will incorporate multi-media. Year 9 or 10 pupils considering studying Sociology at college. Master classes and taster sessions - Vocational: Master class in Art and Design This is a very informative, engaging and actively hands-on session for pupils wishing to gain a better understanding of the four main disciplines in our vibrant Art and Design department. The pupils will be taken through the principles of Fine Art, Photography, Graphics and Textiles, exploring a series of practical exercises that will be fun and interactive. Year 10 and 11 pupils with a love and passion for Art and Design. 1.5 hours. Please contact the High School Liaison team to book your school on the next available date. 10
13 Master class in Barbering and/or Hair and Beauty This hands-on, interactive two hour taster session is aimed at pupils considering a career in Barbering, Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy, a thriving profession dedicated to helping people look and feel their best. Your pupils will learn essential Hair and Beauty techniques and receive treatments from our current students. Year 10 and 11 pupils considering a career in Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy. Business Challenge This 2 hour interactive taster session is designed to provide pupils with an overview of how to develop and plan their own business. Pupils will choose their business, identify their target audience and begin to consider finance, how much setting up the business will cost, marketing techniques and staffing. This session will not only give pupils an overview of setting up a business but also a taster in finance and marketing. Year 10 and 11 pupils. 11
14 Catering taster day This taster day is aimed at pupils interested in taking a course in Catering and Hospitality. Pupils will spend the morning in our kitchen working alongside our staff and students producing food for the lunch time session. Pupils will then dine in the Three Seasons Restaurant and taste the three course meal they have helped to produce. Year 10 and 11 pupils interested in a career in Catering and Hospitality. 2-4 pupils per session. 9.30am pm. February - May. Subject to availability. Master class in Construction This hands-on session is aimed at pupils considering a career within the Construction industry and will take place in our new Construction Skills Centre. Pupils will work alongside current students on a construction activity for either Bricklaying, Plastering or Carpentry and Joinery, for example, building a small cavity wall, preparing a plaster mould or producing a joinery product. The activity can be adapted to meet the needs and interests of the group. Year 10 and 11 pupils. 10 pupils per session. Thursdays. 12
15 The Childcare Challenge This taster will help pupils learn the skills and qualities required to become an effective childcare practitioner or to help when caring for children. Pupils will work in teams to complete a number of activities designed to test their speed, accuracy and creativity. Interactive activities include: Making playdoh, making up a bottle, reading a children s story, administering basic first aid and making a healthy snack. All activities can be adapted to reflect age-group, gender, culture and the schools general interests. All year groups. Up to 20 per session or full year group in PSHE in school hours but can be adapted to suit schools requirements. Master class in Electronic Dance Music Production This is a 2 hour introductory session aimed at pupils wishing to learn how to produce modern dance music. Your session will take place in our state-of-the-art Apple Mac suite using the industry standard 'Logic Pro' music production software. The session will be conducted by one of our tutors who currently works in the music industry, producing tracks for various record labels. He has also received BBC Radio 1 airplay and has remixed former UK No1 artists. Year 10 and 11 pupils interested in Music Production. 1.5 hours. Wednesdays. 13
16 Master class in Electrical Installation This interactive session will give pupils the opportunity to learn about electrical installation in our purpose built workshop facility in the Prospects Centre. Pupils will complete a series of practical tasks, such as connecting an electrical appliance, wiring a junction box and connecting a ceiling rose. An overview of employment opportunities within the electrical sector will also be provided by the tutor. Year 10 and 11 pupils. 15 pupils per session. Thursdays. Health and Social Care Challenge This interactive Health and Social Care taster session will promote personal reflection and an understanding of the needs of clients in Health and Social Care. Pupils will participate in a variety of interactive, hands-on and enjoyable activities. All pupils will be able to play a key role in three tasks: Protect the Egg, Top Trumps and Reflective Hats. By using skills in planning, creation and team work, pupils can use their experience to gain an insight into the skills and qualities needed to work in this field. Year 10 and 11 pupils interested in Health and Social Care. 14
17 Master class in Mechanical Engineering This session is designed to expose pupils interested in Engineering to Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Aided Manufacturing CAM). Using our state-of-the-art CAD CAM suite in the Innovation Centre you will design and make a product using a Denford Triton Pro CNC machine under expert supervision. Year 10 and 11 pupils. 15 pupils per session. Thursdays. Master class in Personal Finance This is a 2 hour introductory session aimed at providing pupils with an overview of some of the money skills they will need in adult life. The session will be conducted by tutors who specialise in personal finance. The session will first ask the question What is money? This will then be developed to begin to explore bank interest borrowing money by loans and mortgages, interest on savings accounts and an overview of personal budgeting which is aimed at pupils of this age. Year 10 and 11 pupils. 15
18 Master class in Public Services This is an interactive Public Services taster session where your pupils will learn about different types of major incidents and investigate ways in which the emergency services, NHS and local authorities deal with them. Pupils investigate the ways in which organisations work together to prepare for major incidents and then complete a realistic tabletop scenario where they are each given a specific role, such as tactical command, as they endeavour to plan their response. Year 10 and 11 pupils interested in careers in Public Services. Samba workshop The Bury College Samba band was formed to celebrate diverse music and to promote the benefits of Samba drumming and rhythms. With that in mind we would like to visit your school to introduce your pupils to the joys of Samba. Our band is available Mondays and Tuesdays to perform in your assemblies followed by an interactive workshop. From Year 7 up to 11. We encourage everyone to join in! pupils per session. Monday and Tuesday mornings. 16
19 The Bury College Sport Challenge The Sport Challenge is designed to introduce your pupils to courses in Sport at Bury College. They will participate in activities including coaching, fitness testing and sports massage and will be advised on a wide range of pathways into exciting careers in the sport, leisure and fitness industries. Pupils will also gain an understanding of what college is really like. There is the option of tailor made challenges for specific sports on request. Year 10 and 11 pupils who may be interested in a course in Sport. 17
20 The Travel and Tourism Holiday Challenge This is a 2 hour interactive taster session designed to explore the demanding world of the Travel and Tourism industry. Working in small groups, your pupils will take part in a variety of activities. These include selling a specific holiday destination and experiencing life as a cabin crew member. Fun and informative, these sessions develop creativity, promote team work and incorporate presentation skills. Year 9, 10 and 11 pupils who may be interested in a career in the Travel and Tourism industry. Practical Geography Our new tourism tutorials provide an opportunity for your pupils to gain an appreciation of tourism within the Geography syllabus. There are six tutorials available (of which you can choose two per session): Introduction to Tourism, Tourism Development, Extreme Environments, Tourism Management, Eco-tourism and Careers in Geography. Year 10 or 11 Geography pupils. 2 x 50 minute tutorials. 18
21 Competitions and Events: The Bury College Challenge The Bury College Challenge is an exciting new competition for local schools. You are invited to nominate four of your Gifted and Talented pupils to represent you and compete against other schools in the ultimate battle of wits, general knowledge and common sense. Year 10 and 11 Gifted and Talented pupils. 4 pupils per school. Number of schools per competition depends upon interest. 2.5 hours. Friday 24th May 2013, 10.00am pm. 19
22 The Debating Challenge Prestigious universities such as Oxford and Cambridge have identified the need to develop higher level thinking skills in young people to help them prepare for higher education. To help schools address this need, we have devised the Bury College Debating Challenge to promote critical thinking, independent research skills, team work and verbal communication. You are invited to nominate four Year 10 pupils to form a team and represent your school in this new and exciting competition. Teams will be given three social or political topics to research thoroughly before the event and asked to develop arguments for and against. Year 10 Gifted and Talented pupils. 4 pupils per school. 3 hours. Friday 14th June 2013, 12.00pm pm. The Bury College Maths Challenge Your gifted mathematicians will complete a series of challenging Maths problems within a strict time limit and compete for a prize. This innovative competition has been extremely well received by pupils and staff, who felt the session enabled the most mathematically gifted pupils to be challenged in a fun format. Year 10 and 11 Gifted and Talented pupils willing to put their mathematical skills to the test. 4 pupils per school. Tuesday 9th April 2013, 10.00am pm. 20
23 Year 9 Gifted and Talented Summer School The Bury College Summer School is an exciting opportunity for your Gifted and Talented Year 9 pupils to experience a genuine insight into life at Bury College. They will sample the subject areas of their choice and try out aspects of our enrichment programme. The summer school is designed to encourage pupils to seriously consider their post-16 options. Year 9 Gifted and Talented pupils pupils per school. 1 full day. Monday 1st July
24 Perfecting your Music performance workshop This exciting new workshop aims to develop pupils performance skills, building confidence and self-esteem and expand their subject knowledge of Music Technology. Year 10 pupils interested in Music students per school. 2 days. Wednesday 3rd Thursday 4th July
25 Performing Arts Summer School This exciting 2 day Performing Arts Summer School will teach pupils extracts from wellknown musicals such as Grease, Mama Mia, Hairspray and even Ghost! Pupils will learn routines in different dance styles, learn songs from the shows and link them all together with scripted extracts, culminating in a performance on the final evening for parents and friends. Year 10 pupils interested in Performing Arts students per school. 2 days. Wednesday 3rd - Thursday 4th July Science and Industry day The aim of the day is to motivate Year 9 or 10 pupils currently on the Triple or Dual Award Science pathway and introduce them to the wide range of career opportunities available. Pupils will participate in a variety of workshops and speak to professionals and past students. This is an inspiration for anyone interested in Science, Engineering, Technology or Medicine. Year 8, 9 or 10 pupils interested in Science and Engineering pupils per school. 2.5 hours. Friday 26th April 2013, 12.30pm pm. 23
26 Sport enhancement days The Sport enhancement days are full day events for up to 40 of your Year 9 or 10 GCSE PE/BTEC Sport pupils. They will spend the day with the Sports department at the Bury College campus and experience practical and theory lessons. The aim of the day is to enhance their GCSE/BTEC performance and prepare them for a sport related subject at college. The events are to be organised and delivered by our Level 3 BTEC Sports students under the supervision of Bury College staff. The students will tailor make the day to suit your curriculum needs. Year 9 or 10 pupils currently studying Sport or PE. Up to 40 students per school. 1day. Monday 8th April - Friday 3rd May
