2 Beverly Hills Summer Academy 2015 High School Program COURSE DESCRIPTIONS AS OF FEBRUARY 2015 Please consult with your guidance counselor before registering (All course offerings are subject to policies and conditions.) The Arts PHOTOGRAPHY SESSION 1 and SESSION 2 Grades: 9-12 Credits: 10 This two-semester, sequential, 10-credit course emphasizes the basic procedures involved in Digital and Traditional Photography. Photographic compositions, the principles of the camera and film, and the history of photography are also covered. Students will maintain a traditional and digital portfolio consisting of a series of original photographic artworks and a photo journal of reflective writing and critique. Session 1 stresses basic principles such as camera control and film and paper processing. Session 2 emphasizes thematic shooting, archival preparation, and alternative processes. Students must provide their own cameras and materials (cost approx. $125-$175.) Prerequisites: None This course meets the UC VPA course requirement. According to the UC guidelines, students must be exposed to one year (i.e., 2 semesters) of VPA course content in the same arts discipline, but the semesters must be taken in sequence. Students wishing to take Session 1, but not Session 2, should contact BHSA at for special arrangements. Session 1-8:00 am 1:20 pm, 12 days, June 8 June 23 Session 2-8:00 am 1:20 pm, 12 days, June 24 - July 10 (No class July 3) $440 per session Lab Fee: $75 (in addition to the materials to be purchased by the student.) Photography Materials List 35mm single lens reflex camera (capable of operating in manual mode). Camera does not need to be new but must be in good working order with fresh batteries and include the owner s manual. (free manuals are often available online) Apron, smock, large old shirt (photo chemicals stain clothing) * optional Pencil box or small art supply box to store small items 2 or 3 black large point Sharpies One Mars plastic eraser Composition book for use as photo journal. 2 inch, three ring binder to contain portfolio Package of clear plastic sheet protectors Package of 25 negative sheets (5) Rolls 100 ISO Ilford 35mm black and white film (or equivalent brand) (5) Rolls 400 ISO Ilford 35mm black and white film or (equivalent brand) One 8x10, 100- sheet Package of Ilford brand, black and white photographic paper. Paper must be (glossy or pearl), RC, and Polycontrast. (extra paper may need to be purchased as needed) One set of 6x6 polycontrast filters. Ten 11x14 matte boards for mounting photos (black on one side, white on the other) Package of glue sticks (5 or 6) One pair of small scissors One issue of B&W Photography Magazine for use with photo journals (these are sold at the photo supply stores where you will get most of your materials).

4 PERFORMING ARTS ACADEMY Grades 9-13 Credits: 10 English CREATIVE WRITING Grades: 9-12 Credits: 5 In this one-semester, 5-credit course, students will explore the genre of creative non-fiction through the retelling of their own experiences. While touching upon the traditional approaches to story-telling, students will also explore writing as artistic expression and will thus study non-traditional media such as film, dance, painting, and sculpture. Students will gain experience in writing groups and building a portfolio. Daily writing exercises will include learning to read with a writer's eye, exploring vocabulary, and mastering and breaking the rules of grammar. Prerequisites: None This course qualifies for elective credit toward BHHS graduation. AVAILABLE 1ST SESSION ONLY: Session 1-8:00 am 1:20 pm, 12 days, June 8 June 23 Enrollment Fee: $440
5 JOURNALISM - BEGINNING Grades: 9-11 Credits: 10 AP/HONORS ENGLISH BRIDGE CLASS Grades: 9-12 Credits: 5 This course is limited to BHHS students only This course is designed for any student who will be taking an AP or Honors English class next year. This two and a half week course will prepare students for the rigors of the AP Language and AP Literature and Honors English classes via directed writing and close reading instruction of required summer reading books. AP writing prompts will be addressed along with AP style reading passages. This course is highly recommended for 9th through 12th grade students who want to make a successful transition to AP or Honors English. Prerequisites: none This course qualifies for elective credit toward BHHS graduation. 8:00 am - 1:20 pm, 12 days, June 8 - June 23 Enrollment Fee: $440 Health HEALTH EDUCATION Grades: 9-12 Credits: 5 Health Education is a one-semester, 5-credit course. Topics discussed are drug education, preventing disease, including heart disease and cancer, environmental health, emotional health, physical fitness, nutrition and sex education, including venereal diseases. 6 Mathematics REFRESHER ALGEBRA Grades: 9-12 Credits: 5 GEOMETRY Grades: 9-12 Credits: 10 This two-semester, 10-credit course is designed for students with strong interest and ability in math and/or science. This is not the Basic Geometry course offered at BHHS. Topics include proofs, congruencies, similarity, triangles, perpendiculars, parallels, coordinate geometry, transformations, circles, spheres, areas, and volumes. Algebraic techniques are used extensively and formal proofs of theorems are required. This is a rigorous course requiring several hours of homework each day, including weekends. Prerequisites: A or high B in Algebra 1-2, with Algebra teacher recommendation. 7 Science BIOLOGY Grades: 9-12 Credits: 10 This two-semester, 10-credit course utilizes a laboratory approach to introduce the student to the main concepts and principles of modern biology. Such topics as biochemistry, cell biology, physiology, reproduction, heredity and ecology are explored. Emphasis is placed not only on biological theories, but also on the evidence for such theories and the methods by which this evidence is gathered. This is a rigorous course requiring several hours of homework each day, including weekends. Prerequisites: None This course is CSU and UC-approved (a-g subject requirements) 8:00 am 1:20 pm, 24 days, June 8 - July 10 (No class July 3) Enrollment Fee: $880 Lab Fee: $75 CHEMISTRY Grades: Credits: 10 This two-semester, 10-credit course is a laboratory-based, college-preparatory course designed to present an integrated and relevant approach to basic scientific principles regarding the nature and activity of matter. Areas studied are atomic structure, kinetic theory, the periodic table, the mole concept, chemical bonding, reaction rates, organic chemistry, and biochemistry. 8 Social Science UNITED STATES HISTORY 5-6 Grades: Credits: 10 This two-semester, 10-credit course is designed to survey the basic political, economic, geographic, social, intellectual and cultural themes in U.S. history to help students develop an understanding of American ideals, traditions, and institutions focusing on the 20th Century. This is a rigorous course requiring several hours of homework each day, including weekends. Prerequisites: None This course is CSU and UC-approved (a-g subject requirements) 8:00 am 1:20 pm, 24 days, June 8 - July 10 (No class July 3) Enrollment Fee: $880 WORLD HISTORY/GEOGRAPHY 1-2 Grade: 10 Credits: 10 This two-semester, 10-credit course emphasizes the major turning points that shaped the modern world, from the late 18th century through the present, including the cause and course of the two world wars. Students will draw upon their earlier study of ancient and medieval history to trace the rise of democratic ideas and develop an understanding of the historical roots of current world issues, especially as they pertain to international relations. Students will extrapolate from the American experience that democratic ideals are often achieved at a high price, remain vulnerable, and are not practiced everywhere in the world. This is a rigorous course requiring several hours of homework each day, including weekends. 9 Other Courses CODING Grades: 9-12 Credits: 5 HTML is a computer language that is used for website development. This summer coding class will teach the basics of HTML and how it relates to building most websites. Students will learn how to script code and how that code is read by current browsers to show basic graphic images. Prerequisites: None This course qualifies for credit toward BHHS graduation. AVAILABLE 1ST SESSION ONLY: Session 1-8:00 am 1:20 pm, 12 days, June 8 June 23 Enrollment Fee: $440 ACADEMIC DECATHLON Grades: 9-12 NOT FOR CREDIT Students will learn fundamental principles of art, music theory, economics, critical reading, advance mathematics, selected science topics, historical thinking, essay-writing and public speaking. Highly recommended for students interested in the Aca Deca program, or those wishing to become wellrounded and skilled in many fields. This is a great opportunity for incoming Freshman! What is Academic Decathlon (Aca Deca)? It is an extracurricular activity/course in which schools compete nationwide in ten differen subject areas that include: Language and Literature, Social Science, Art, Music, Science, Mathematics, Economics, Interview, Speech and Essay. The competitions have a theme each year, which provides a focus for the subject content materials. The subjects themselves are meant to prepare students for topics and issue they will likely be addressing in their academic future.
