20 Employer comment Claudia came to Orbit with a large knowledge base from her tourism degree. This made the initial training easier for her as she could relate back to things she had already learnt in her degree. Claudia came in with enthusiasm and a positive attitude, which fit in with our company values and made the decision to hire her very easy. The background and overall knowledge of the tourism industry Claudia picked up at AUT has really given her an advantage in her career so far, and has made for a very smooth transition into her working career. Ryan Manson, Shorthaul Team Leader, Orbit Corporate Travel Claudia Stead Shorthaul Consultant, Orbit Corporate Travel Bachelor of International Tourism Management Being able to spend three months at Orbit Corporate Travel as part of her AUT degree was an amazing opportunity, says Bachelor of International Tourism Management graduate Claudia Stead. During the 12-week co-operative education placement in my final year I met wonderful people, gained valuable experience and opened my eyes to the possibilities in the industry. Even better, I ended up being offered a full-time role at Orbit. Learning by doing While on placement, Claudia was trained as a shorthaul consultant for corporate clients, doing daily tasks such as booking and amending flights and hotels, and using the global distribution system (GDS) Amadeus. I loved learning a different side of the industry, and getting first-hand experience as a liaison between the supply and demand of tourism. Since Orbit is such a major corporate travel consultancy firm, I also met employees from all the big players in the tourism industry. As part of my co-op I was given the project of evaluating the induction process for Orbit s new employees and got to propose a new system. To do this I used a great deal of academic theory combined with my personal experience of the induction and the experiences I heard about through interviews I conducted with other employees. It was such a great opportunity. Prepared well by AUT Having always been fascinated by travel and tourism, Claudia chose to study at AUT because of its practical approach to learning. AUT has a reputation for providing a good balance between theory and practice. AUT has not only taught me so much from the academic side; it has also given me first-hand experience in the industry. This experience has already opened up many doors for me. Claudia says AUT helped her develop personal skills of perseverance, working under pressure and managing time efficiently. AUT has helped me grow as an individual and prepared me to enter the workforce. It gave me the opportunity to study what I love, surrounded by like-minded people and with great academic supervisors to help me along the way. 18

23 Employer comment Joel has been able to acquire a good understanding of what we do here at Agoda s office very quickly and efficiently. He is always eager to learn more and has even been able to share some innovative ideas with the team. I believe his degree in tourism has definitely given Joel his confidence and will help him further his career in the tourism industry. Kathy Turner, Country Manager Hotels, New Zealand, Agoda.com Joel Madden Market Coordinator, Agoda.com Bachelor of Tourism Studies* in Social Sciences Being able to spend time in the tourism industry as part of your degree is an amazing opportunity, says AUT tourism graduate Joel Madden. In your final year, you do a co-operative work placement in a tourism organisation. It s a wonderful chance to see for yourself what the tourism industry is really like and how it compares to what you have learnt at university. Real-life travel marketing experience During his 12 weeks at Coconuts Travel Marketing, Joel gained invaluable practical experience, particularly of marketing resort destinations for specific audiences, including honeymoons or families. I was lucky enough to experience a range of different tourismrelated industry events during my placement from industry nights to travel and wedding expos. Co-op opens door This practical experience during your studies is an invaluable networking opportunity, says Joel. Your co-op placement can also open the door to full-time employment. At the end of my placement at Coconuts Travel Marketing, for example, I was offered a position as support administrator there, a role I held until I joined Agoda.com. An ever-changing work environment Now working at online travel agency Agoda.com, Joel loves the variety of his role. Agoda.com specialises in hotels, and I m responsible for looking after accommodation properties in Wellington and Queenstown. I get them signed up and listed on our website, communicate with channel managers, process reports, and sort out any issues anyone may have. Well-prepared Joel feels his degree provided a good basis for his career. My studies gave me an understanding of specific trends in the market and the different opportunities within the industry. The marketing papers we did are a great help when we brainstorm ideas for how to make bookings for our properties. They also help me identify reasons why a region is doing particularly well or why it needs improvement. AUT also helped me develop the skills to write reports and press releases, work as a team and make contacts within the industry. This definitely helped me get the job I have today! * The Bachelor of Tourism Studies has been renamed Bachelor of International Tourism Management. 21
