If you choose a second major or a minor you can study an area of interest from a range of subjects. For a complete list refer to Conjoint programmes and double degrees Today, standing out from the crowd is more important than ever. A conjoint programme of study doubles your knowledge and opportunities, but it doesn t take double the time to complete. You study two degrees at the same time in a single programme of study and complete both degrees in a shorter time than it would take to complete them separately. It s usually possible to complete two three-year degrees in four to five years. You need to maintain a B grade average across all papers to remain in the programme of study and you need to do papers from each degree every year. A double degree is another great way to make your CV stand out. The difference between a double degree and a conjoint is that in the double degree you enrol separately in each of the two degrees. You can cross-credit papers from one degree to the other, which means you need to do fewer papers. Double degrees usually take longer than conjoint programmes but there are some advantages: a greater range of programmes to choose from, no minimum grade average each year and no rules about having to take papers from each qualification each year. The amount of cross-credit will vary depending on the degree combinations. 07

Kendall Ker Learning and Development Coordinator, Fisher & Paykel Healthcare Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences and Bachelor of Business in Human Resources and Employment Relations conjoint programme Being able to gain industry experience as part of your studies is invaluable, says Kendall Ker who studied business and social sciences at AUT. I can t emphasise enough the advantage of completing an industry placement in my final semester it was absolutely key to securing full-time employment before I even graduated. It gave me a distinct advantage over other job applicants, Kendall says. Attracted by reputation and industry focus This emphasis on real-world learning was why Kendall first decided to study at AUT. Not only is AUT a top university, but it is also known for the industry experience included in many of its degrees. I knew this would be an advantage when applying for jobs. Everything you do at AUT ultimately prepares you for your future career working collaboratively with your classmates and in a small group, communication skills, report writing skills, delivering presentations... These are all essential skills for the workplace. The highlight for Kendall was the co-operative education placement in her final semester. I completed my industry experience at Teach First NZ: Ako Mātātupu, a not-for-profit organisation that tackles education inequality. All the skills I had built up throughout my studies were extremely useful in the workplace. Even better, at the end of my placement, Teach First NZ offered me a job as their operations co-ordinator. A broad foundation Kendall chose to study both business and social sciences as she wanted to balance her business studies with an understanding of current and historical social issues that have shaped society. I ve always been interested in human resources and employment relations, but I also enjoy researching new topics and analysing data related to sociological, cultural, economic and political issues. Working in human resources involves working with people with different backgrounds and beliefs, so understanding complex social issues can only benefit me. The Social Sciences major fulfilled all of these things and gave me another career pathway. 09

UNDERGRADUATE Double degree: Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws If you want to make a positive difference to your community and are interested in law and the legal system, you can combine your social sciences degree with AUT s Bachelor of Laws. A double degree is also a great way to make your CV stand out to future employers. If you study the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws as a double degree, you complete the two degrees concurrently in just over five years compared to the seven years it would take if you studied them separately. You enrol in the two programmes that make up the double degree separately and have to complete all required papers for each degree (core papers and electives). What this qualification covers In each year of your double degree, you study papers from the Bachelor of Arts and the Bachelor of Laws. Now enrolled in AUT s Bachelor of Arts in Criminology and Bachelor of Laws double degree, he hopes to turn his passion into a career as a criminal lawyer. I grew up in the Democratic Republic of Congo one of the most war torn countries in the world and frequently saw people s rights taken away. It made me interested in why some people are more likely to commit crime than others, says Ben who came to New Zealand as a refugee five years ago. My law degree plus my understanding of theories related to criminology and crime will give me a good grounding for a career where I can really make a difference. Choosing a double degree After initially enrolling in AUT s Bachelor of Arts in Criminology, Ben decided to add law after his first year. I wanted to understand what justice is, and I could see that doing a double degree would be extremely helpful for my future career. Law really builds you I love the subject. Inspiring lecturers and papers There have been many highlights in his study so far, says Benjamin who completed his Bachelor of Arts last year and is in the third year of his Bachelor of Laws. My favourite paper was on war and crime, focusing on how human conflict is influenced by politics. I think I achieved my highest grades in this paper and the lecturer, Jane Verbitzky, was lovely. It inspired me to hopefully do a Master of Human Rights one day. Another standout was the co-operative education placement, Benjamin says. I completed my placement at the New Zealand Centre for Human Rights Law, Policy and Practice. I worked as a research associate, helping my supervisor to investigate how politics influence the international criminal justice system. It was such a privilege to get this position. 10

Eve Cahill Determinations Officer, Department of Internal Affairs Bachelor of Arts in Conflict Resolution and Criminology Working for people through government agencies has always appealed to Eve Cahill. I see the positive impact government agencies can have on our society and I wanted to be part of that. Finding her passion Now working as a determinations officer for the Department of Internal Affairs, Eve loves the variety of her role. My role involves assessing evidence to establish someone s claim to New Zealand citizenship by descent, by people born overseas to a New Zealand citizen parent. It s my job to establish their identity from overseas documents and check if their claim is valid. I ve had to become familiar with the Citizenship Act, Adoption Act, Status of Children Act, the British Nationality and New Zealand Citizenship Act. I find that fascinating. Before being promoted to this role last year, Eve worked as customer services officer in the Department of Internal Affairs Service, Delivery and Operations branch, which covers passports, citizenship, and births, deaths and marriages. Understanding people and society Studying criminology and conflict resolution provides a varied and challenging view of people and society, says Eve. Through my AUT degree I developed a greater understanding of the relationship between crime and conflict resolution, and how conflict resolution can challenge our criminal justice system and society s retributivist ways of thinking. Co-op opened doors Completing her final-year work placement for the Peace Foundation gave her insight into the importance of social education, Eve says. I was involved in facilitating the Peace Foundation s Cool Schools Peer Mediation Programme at schools around Auckland. This involved creating resources and presentations and running activities to develop students conflict resolution skills. This experience gave me practical tools to complement the theory I was learning at AUT. I had to research and develop my ideas, which got me thinking outside the box when dealing with peace, war, conflict and conflict resolution concepts. It was also a great reference to put on my CV. 13

Employer comment Graduates like Olivia are really valuable to The Warehouse Group because they bring problem-solving skills, critical thinking and initiative that are vital to the success of a rapidly changing and increasingly global business. I had the benefit of seeing how Olivia approached her advisor role at Noel Leeming and was impressed with her pragmatic approach to solving quite difficult problems. I decided I had to have her in my team. Olivia is a great example of an AUT graduate who has brought a blend of theoretical and practical learning that allows her to quickly come to grips with our needs and make a real difference in our workplace. Julie Simpson, Head of Employment Relationships, The Warehouse Group Olivia Dyet Employee Relations Advisor, The Warehouse Group Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Bachelor of Business in Management conjoint programme AUT s focus on real-life experience was the highlight of her studies, says Olivia Dyet who graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Bachelor of Business in Management conjoint programme. I ve always been really interested in people and why they do what they do, so psychology was an obvious choice for me. AUT has a reputation for providing students with real-life experience and preparing them well for the workplace. For me that was a key reason for choosing AUT. She also enjoyed the focus on group work throughout her studies. You learn the importance of being persuasive to get an idea across, lead a team and achieve an outcome as a team, rather than as an individual. That is great preparation for the workplace where it really is all about teamwork. Outstanding support The support network at AUT is phenomenal, says Olivia who was one of the top students in both her psychology and business papers. But she admits it wasn t always easy. In my third year, I found out that I was pregnant. When my son was three months old I decided to return to university. Completing two degrees with a small baby wasn t easy, but the support I received from my lecturers and friends at AUT to complete my degree was great. They constantly cheered me on and went above and beyond to support me. Passionate about employment relations Now working as employee relations advisor at The Warehouse Group, Olivia loves the variety of her role. I ve been with The Warehouse Group for a little over a year now. Initially, I was a people support advisor for Noel Leeming, which is part of The Warehouse Group. Then I was lucky enough to get the opportunity in an area of human resources that I m absolutely passionate about employment relations. I love being able to use my understanding of psychology and people every day to help support the really great culture we have here. I think my degrees were invaluable and really set me up with a great understanding of how the real world works. 17

Janet Akai Youth Connections Cadet, Community Development and Safety Unit, Auckland Council Volunteer, Cook Islands Development Agency Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences For proud Cook Islander Janet Akai, a social sciences degree from AUT has given her the skills she needs to make a real difference. Helping youth Now working as a youth connections cadet at Auckland Council, Janet loves learning from experts in community development and being a part of youth-focused events. Our aim is to help youth young people between 16 and 24 into employment, training or education. I m constantly out in the community, engaging with passionate people who want the best for youth. One of my recent highlights, for example, was organising JobFest 15 which focused on getting youth into employment, with actual job opportunities offered on the day. I also attend meetings with local boards, schools, the Ministry of Social Development, Youthline and other services, sharing ideas on how to encourage youth to seek out the opportunities available to them. Another key focus for me is testing an online system that will help us better support young people and put them in touch with the right services. Supporting the Cook Islands community In addition to her busy job, Janet also volunteers at the Cook Islands Development Agency. I enjoy being able to combine my full-time role with volunteering, and being able to apply the skills I have developed to help support my community. One of the highlights for me last year was being a part of the Akirata Ou 2014 Cook Islands Festival. It was amazing to see how my work contributed to the happiness of my people. Culture and people Janet initially considered a teaching career but after a gap year she decided to enrol in the Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences at AUT. I realised that I wanted to do something with culture and people. I also wanted a degree that allowed me to learn more about my culture. I felt that AUT would help me achieve this. I would recommend the AUT social sciences degree to anyone who is passionate about culture, people and challenging themselves. 19

UNDERGRADUATE Employer comment Mahe is a strong, steady, solid member of the face to face team at Auckland Transport (AT). AT were happy to be able to support Mahe whilst he was studying for his BA in Social Sciences by giving him access to part-time employment, and the investment has paid off. Mahe is now a supervisor in our largest customer service centre and brings to the role the knowledge he gained from his degree. His ability to interact on any level with our diverse customer base, many nationalities and demographics, and his respect and understanding of customers and staff is an asset to our organisation. Gail Anderson, Team Leader, Auckland Transport Mahe O. Chicago Taukolo Face to Face Relations Supervisor, Customer Services, Auckland Transport Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences Master of Arts student Mahe Taukolo has always been passionate about Pacific people, a passion that led him to enrol in AUT s Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences. I knew that studying social sciences would help me better understand the problems or social injustices urban Pacific Islanders often face in contemporary New Zealand. While Mahe s degree certainly helped him achieve that, he discovered that the skills developed throughout his studies also reach much wider. Better customer interactions Now a customer services supervisor at Auckland Transport, Mahe says his social sciences degree helps him on a daily basis. I m one of the supervisors looking after Auckland Transport s four customer service centres. Each month we interact with 20,000 to 30,000 customers, helping them plan their journeys on buses, trains and ferries. It s such a fulfilling and varied role we provide timetable, fare and route information, and answer general public transport queries. The ability to better understand people and how they fit into society is a key skill I learned in my social sciences degree. It s essential for my interactions with customers and our team of customer service representatives. As part of my degree I also did a minor in conflict resolution, which helped me develop strong negotiation skills. Mahe s responsibilities are likely to grow soon, as Auckland Transport expects to increase the number of its customer service centres. Leadership skills through co-op His Year 3 co-operative education placement was one of the highlights of Mahe s studies. I did a 16-week placement at the Genesis Youth Trust, which promotes positive lifestyle changes to at-risk youth and their families. My co-op was a great opportunity to develop great leadership skills. I use these skills all the time now. Flexible study options For Mahe, being able to combine study with his other commitments was a big drawcard. I m a family man with a wife and three lovely kids and it was great to be able to fit my classes around family commitments and part-time work. For me that was a big benefit of studying at AUT. 20
