1 PURPOSE OF THE CIM The purpose of the Certificate of Initial Mastery (CIM) is to assure that each student has mastered key academic knowledge and skills at high proficiency levels. This purpose emphasizes that: All students have the skills to read, write, reason, communicate and solve problems. All students have the opportunity to learn, think, retrieve information and use technology. All students have the opportunity to work effectively as individuals and in a group setting. Student assessment is based on academic content standards in reading/literature, writing, mathematics, mathematical problem solving, and science. WHY SHOULD YOUR STUDENT EARN A CIM? Although earning a CIM is not required for graduation, it has considerable value: Satisfies one of the criteria for a student to receive a Scholars Diploma. Completing the Reading, Writing, & Math CIM is a measure for student preparedness for SHS advance courses. In order to receive a CAM in a career area, you will need a CIM. State tests are given each year during testing windows. Within these windows, each school determines on which days it will administer state tests. During the school s testing period, a student can take a state test for the first time or re-take a test. 2 Scappoose High School is Committed to providing students with an education that is based on: Rigor in every learning experience Relevance to education and career goals Relationships with the staff and the community In an effort to improve students experience, Scappoose High School is working to implement new diploma requirements set by the Oregon Department of Education. Although putting into effect all the new requirements will take time, many improvements are already taking place, and the rest are in the process of being developed with input from the staff, the students, and the Scappoose community. Embedded in all programs is an emphasis on literacy to improve reading and writing achievement at SHS. What are the new ODE diploma requirements for ? What is Scappoose doing to meet these requirements? 1. Education Plan and Profile Schools will work with all students to develop and implement their personalized education plan and profile, which will help prepare them for their post-high school goals. 2. Extended Application Schools will work with all students to develop and produce an extended application of their education, which will demonstrate skills learned. 3. Career Related Learning Standards Schools will develop and implement curriculum based on skill sets, which will help prepare students for posthigh school education and employment. Scappoose High School Improvement Plan 4. Career Related Learning Experiences Schools will work with their community to establish career related learning experiences for all students, which will help prepare students for post-high school education and employment. 5. Academic Standards Schools will work with all students to meet the state s academic standards, as defined by the Certificate of Initial Mastery (CIM) and Certificate of Advanced Mastery (CAM). 1. Five Year Plan for Students Scappoose has developed a document that students will use to plan their course schedules with the help of career interest surveys and activities in Advisory. 2. Senior Seminar This is a required course designed to help students produce a culminating project that demonstrates their skills and focuses on career interests, and the Career Related Learning Standards. 3. Career Learning Areas Scappoose has developed six Career Learning Areas focused on providing students with skills needed in their chosen careers by surveying student career interests and analyzing curriculum strengths. 4. Career Related Learning Experiences Scappoose is in the process of making connections and building partnerships with the community to provide students with internship and mentorship experiences in their areas of interest. 5. CIM / CAM Portfolios Scappoose has adopted a Scholar s Diploma and, with a focus on literacy, maintains the goal that all students demonstrate academic standards through completion of CIM tests and work samples. 9
