2 P A G E 2 Acknowledgement The holidays are a time of prayer and reflection. We atone for our past shortcomings and resolve to do better in the coming year. We give thanks for our blessings and pray for peace, healing and well-being in the year ahead. The solemnity of the Days of Awe, the joy of Sukkot, and the boisterous revelry of Simchat Torah cover a broad spectrum of religious emotion.. Now that the holiday season of 5775 is concluded, we want to acknowledge the generosity and effort of all who helped make our worship and celebrations this year so beautiful and inspiring. We missed Cantor Paul Weichsel and Linda this year. Paul has uplifted us with his chanting of the liturgy over the past two plus decades and could not be with us this year because of Linda s illness. We wish Linda, who has now completed her round of treatments at the Mayo Clinic, speedy and complete healing. We are grateful to Ozma Rahman, our office administrator, and Gina Cihlar, our custodian, for the extra work and responsibilities that they perform during this season. Sari Wancket, President of the Board, Zale Glauberman, chair of the Religious Committee, and Stuart Shiffman, chair of the House Committee, worked hard in preparation for the holidays, so that the services would flow smoothly and so that our building would be in tiptop shape. Frank Stern helped change the Ark curtain to the special white used for the holidays. The Sabath - Seitz family and the Wancket family donated pulpit flowers for Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur respectively. Barry Seidman's excellent sounding of the shofar set the appropriate mood for these days of judgment and repentance. Lois Rakov did a fine job with services for our young people on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Special thanks to our ushers - Mark Deluhery, Sara Lieber, Len Lieberman, Caleb Melamed, Maurice Nagorsky, Adam Porter, Brian Schwartz, Jerry Schwartz, Barbara Seidman, Michael Stern, and Mark Wancket- for maintaining the decorum and dignity of our worship services. And thanks to our substitute rabbis - Harry Berman, Anne Morgan, Adam Porter, and Eli Seidman, whose assistance allowed Rabbi Marks the opportunity to rest his voice. The Haftorot were beautifully chanted by Harry Berman, Barry Seidman, Sari Wancket, Barbara Seidman, Caleb Melamed, and Linda Morrison. Lois Rakov did an outstanding job reading the Torah on the first day of Rosh Hashanah and on Yom Kippur morning. The singing of our choir added to the beauty and spiritual uplift of our services. Thanks to our director, Erin Sabath, and to choir members Deborah Berman, Zale Glauberman, Lisa GoldbergBelle, Carol Kitterman, Linda Morrison, Fran Nagorsky, Jackie Perlmutter, Mark Wancket, Sari Wancket, Barry Weiss, and Peter Wenz. We appreciate the efforts of our Sukkah decorators the students at B rit Yisrael School and especially Jori, Elliott, and Edie Sisk. Our Board sponsored a delightful Oneg following services on the first night of Rosh Hashana. Sisterhood, arranged to provide child care at all morning services. The Sisterhood-sponsored Break the Fast following Yom Kippur was, as always, a welcome conclusion to the rigors of a day devoted to prayer and fasting. We acknowledge the efforts of Beryl Feldman, Sandy Weiss, and Grace Wenz and their helpers, who worked so hard to prepare and serve this delicious meal. Carol Kitterman provided apples and candy for our Simchat Torah celebration. Bisch Memorial Home, as they have done for many years now, supplied us with Jewish religious calendars for the coming year, for which we re most grateful. If we've omitted a name, please be assured that the error is inadvertent and will be corrected at the earliest opportunity. Special thanks to all of our members for their support and their participation and for striving to make this a warm, friendly, and caring Jewish community. To Temple Families The Board is planning to initiate a Mazel Tov Squad With Rabbi Marks blessing we are planning to add a small celebration to our Friday night services, starting once a month. We are asking our members to us to let us know of special simchas like birthdays, anniversaries, the birth of children to our families, or other special events that Rabbi can announce from the Bima. The congregation along with some choir members will sing a song of celebration to salute these special events in the lives of our members. We would hope that you would join us at that service The Board is planning to add a new musical element to our Friday night services. We are asking that all interested members who play a musical instrument to contact Rabbi or Ozma to take part in the services which we hope will be a once a month event.

3 P A G E 3 President Message Another high holiday season has come and gone. I hope that all of you had time for self-reflection. Even without the presence of Cantor Weichsel, we had wonderful services. I want to thank Rabbi Marks for going above and beyond his usual outstanding service to our congregation. I also want to commend my fellow choir members, especially Peter Wenz, for taking on additional responsibilities. I know that Rabbi Marks also relied on other congregants to serve as substitutes while he was assuming some of the cantorial duties. I thank those individuals and everyone else who participated. I would be remiss if I did not thank our board of directors who generously volunteer their time to help guide our congregation. During my Kol Nidre address, I shared my thoughts on what Temple Israel stands for besides a warm, friendly and inviting place for people to worship. I hope all of you have thought about what Temple Israel stands for and your personal connection to our congregation. I thank you for your generous Kol Nidre pledges. If you did not receive your pledge card during the holidays, one will be mailed to you. When you receive it, I hope that you will make a generous pledge to help us continue all of our great work at Temple Israel. Please note that Kol Nidre funds comprise more than 35% of our yearly operating budget. We are faced with a significant projected budget deficit for the coming fiscal year. Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. It is a day for family, food, and being thankful for what we have. We are fortunate to live in Springfield where we have not had to endure terrorist acts like some other cities. But, we must not allow ourselves to become complacent. Our security committee, headed by Mark Deluhery, remains vigilant and keeps up with all current security measures and warnings. We all should consider ourselves as part of the security team. Remember the important slogan, If you see something, say something and report anything that is suspicious or unusual. Happy Thanksgiving! Sari Miller Wancket With Sadness.. We mourn the tragic passing of our beloved member LYNNE ASH October 1, 2014 Lynne and her late husband, David were long-time members of Temple Israel. She was an associate at the Taylorville Wal-Mart for over 35 years, an active participant in Girl Scouts and Sertoma, a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, and a cherished friend. We extend condolences to daughters Marissa and Elizabeth, son-in-law Rob, and grandsons, David and Steven. May her memory endure as a blessing, and may she rest in peace.
