2 Pastor Bev Piro Dear Brothers and Sisters of St. Andrew, 4 I am pleased and privileged to be your Interim Pastor beginning November 1. Just as I am curious to learn about you, you are probably curious about me, so here s a brief introduction. I am a native of St. Louis, Missouri, a true mid-westerner at heart. I was raised in the Missouri Synod and felt a call to ministry at age 15 as I prepared for my confirmation. Of course, women were not allowed to be pastors at that time, but the Church was going through a time of significant change, and the way was opened for me to attend seminary. I graduated from Christ-Seminary (Seminex) in The following year I married Rocky Piro, a Denver native and we started our family in Denver. My first call was to be Youth and Education Minister at Glory of God Lutheran Church in Wheat Ridge. In 1986 we moved with our two young children to Seattle where my husband studied at the University of Washington for his PhD in Urban Planning. Now, twenty-six years later Rocky and I have returned to Denver for his job as Manager of Community Planning and Development for the City and County of Denver. I have spent most of my ministry serving the people of Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church (PRLC) in Seattle. A large, urban congregation with a strong history of service to the community, PRLC is a theologically progressive church that welcomes people of all faith traditions and offers a special welcome to the unchurched. It was one of ten congregations from across the US profiled in Diana Butler Bass 2007 book, Christianity For the Rest of Us. PRLC is currently in their period of Interim Ministry following my departure in December 2012 and the Lead Pastor s retirement this past May. I have just concluded a four month Interim at Lord of the Mountains in Dillon, the congregation to which Pastor Stephanie has been called. I feel so blessed to be called to lead a community in worship, celebrate the sacraments, preach the Gospel and care for God s people and I look forward to being with you in this time of transition. 3 St. Andrew News WELCOME INTERIM PASTOR BEV PIRO As you have just read in her letter, we welcome Pastor Bev Piro (pronounced PEERoh) to St. Andrew this month as our Interim Pastor. You will have a chance to meet her at the Fall Potluck and Silent Auction on November 9th, and then her first Sunday with us will be November 10th. Pastor Bev will be part-time, working Wednesday through Friday, and Sunday mornings. Welcome Pastor Bev! CHOIR DIRECTOR UPDATE We hope to have news very soon about a selection for the St. Andrew Choir Director position. As you know, there have been three wonderful candidates who have rehearsed and performed with the choir over the last several weeks. They each have wonderful gifts and different strengths they bring to music ministry. Please keep our candidates and our choir in your prayers as a decision is made. PLEASE Wear your name tags for the next few weeks so Pastor Bev Piro can connect faces and names! 3

4 St. Andrew Happenings SENIOR SAINTS The Senior Saints will meet on Tuesday, November 19th at 10:00 a.m. to view pictures of France that Steve and Terry Mallinson took while vacationing there this past summer. On Tuesday, December 17th, at 11:45 a.m. the Senior Saints will meet for their traditional Christmas Potluck. Instead of a gift exchange we'd ask you to write a check to the Arvada Community Food Bank. Everybody is welcome! FALL POTLUCK AND SILENT AUCTION We'll celebrate the change of season and have some fun at our fall potluck and silent auction, beginning at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 9th. The silent auction tables will open at 5 p.m. with the potluck meal to follow. Once we've had a chance to eat and enjoy some fellowship time, we'll take final bids on auction items and close the tables. We are accepting gifts/silent auction items of all kinds. Some ideas: How about a coupon for a meal for four? Yard work done by you? Or an evening out with babysitting included? What do you have that could be turned into a craft project? Any food items or baked goods that could be sold for this worthy cause? Be creative! Use your imagination! We need all items to be at the church by noon on Saturday, November 9th. Proceeds from the silent auction will be divided between roof repair, benevolence and the St. Andrew Endowment Fund. 4

5 St. Andrew News PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY Will meet on November 3rd & 17th HOW DOES OUR GARDEN GROW Wow - more than a dozen volunteers from St. Andrew along with one of the Girl Scout troops that meets in our building gathered on October 5th to break ground for a community garden area. Several hours later, the progress was amazing. There are now six raised beds that will be ready for planting in the sprint. Thank you to all who volunteered, especially Jean and Diane Lascot for their work at organizing all of the supplies, the city grant, and the work day. We are looking for someone to help coordinate the garden for next spring - this would involve helping set up gardener rules and being a point of contact for neighbors who are interested in planting one of the beds. If you can be an "organizer" let us know. KING SOOPERS GIFT CARDS Thank you to those who are using the King Soopers gift cards. Every time you load the gift card with money and then use it to purchase groceries or gas, King Soopers donates a percentage of that to St. Andrew. Your efforts to use the gift cards helps! And, if you need a gift card, let Karen in the church office know. 5

6 St. Andrew Happenings ALMOST LIKE HOME MINISTRY FOR NOVEMBER November team leaders are: November 4th and 18th Jean Berres and Deb Hartke Jacque Will and Paulette Snyder RAISING THE ROOF Thank you for your ongoing contributions for roof repairs. We are raising about $3,000 for these repairs, which will extend the life of our roof for several years. To make a contribution, select a sticky note from the board in the Narthex with the amount you would like to contribute, and place it with cash or a check in the offering plate. (Checks can be noted for "property" in the subject line.) THANKSGIVING SERVICE We have much to be thankful for! Join our neighbors from other Arvada congregations for this year's Ecumenical Thanksgiving Service on Tuesday, November 26th at 7:00 p.m. at First United Church of Arvada, 7195 Simms St. Arvada. There will light refreshments of cookies and coffee following the service. 6

In the history of the Fund, it is 2009 already! This was the year, as a congregation, we celebrated the 50th Anniversary of St. Andrew. Since we were started as a mission church, we gave money to the newest mission outreach project in the Synod: House for All Sinners and Saints. This was also the first year that the committee was able to honor international requests. We received two of them. One was to Iglesia Luterana Cristo Rey in El Paso, TX/Juarez, Mexico for Christmas baskets for needy families there. The other was to United Methodist Global Mission in Sudan for educational supplies for students in that part of the world. Being able to honor global requests was another forward moving step in the life of your Endowment Fund! Mission Statement The family of St. Andrew gathers in Christ to worship and praise God, to serve and witness to others. 7
