2 It is difficult to choose from many successful and fulfilling moments at Holy Trinity. However, the two chosen items listed here are illustrative of the variety of moments. Recently, a mother and three children were baptized together. The family, including the father, has become vital members of our parish. Secondly, the parish just celebrated dedicating the rose window in the sanctuary to our former rector, Thomas Davis, who retired in 1995 after 25 years as Rector. A standing ovation followed the dedication for all that retired Rev. Davis has meant to Holy Trinity and the Clemson Community. How are your preparing yourselves for the Church of the future? Holy Trinity acquired the adjacent property which was formerly the United Methodist Church. A HT taskforce is actively investigating development possibilities for this property with the pro bono help of Clemson University s Community Research and Design Center and several architectural graduate students. The overall goal of this project is the enhancement of Holy Trinity s future impact with Clemson University students and the Clemson Community in general. excellent and scholarly preaching/leading Christian Education/provide and coordinate pastoral care

3 Holy Trinity s liturgical style and practice is traditional, with exceptions for special occasions and different groups. There are some services at St. Paul s that include other Pendleton churches. There is a Thanksgiving service offered there. The Good Friday service is typically at St Paul s with other churches in Pendleton participating. How do you practice incorporating others in ministry? Holy Trinity incorporates many parishioners in areas of ministry. More than two dozen parishioners serve as Eucharistic Ministers, Lecturers and Intercessors (on a rotating schedule) in the services. Approximate two dozen parishioners serve on each of the Altar Guild, teach Sunday school, or prepare meals. Holy Trinity has neighborhood groups, a strong pastoral care committee with a new visitation group, and EFM. There is an engagement team which works with newcomers and regularly engages the Parish in activities. For example, this year is the Celebration of Year of the Parish at Holy Trinity -- a thankful reflection on the many past accomplishments over the years, a recognition of who we are in the present, and an eager anticipation of the future. As a worshipping community, how do you care for your spiritual, emotional and physical well-being? Caring for our spiritual, emotional and physical well-being is led by our rector and is supplemented by the neighborhood groups and our pastoral care team. We also come together at a parish weekend at Kanuga -- a time when many new friendships are formed and old acquaintances are renewed.

4 How do you engage in pastoral care for those beyond your worshipping community? We care for those outside our worshiping community in a variety of ways. One way is through the Thrift Shop at St. Paul s. We serve a community of people through our outreach that do not have the means to shop other places. We have many volunteers involved with Clemson Community Care and the Clemson Free Clinic serving people who cannot help themselves. Global outreach includes financial and hands on support of our diocesan partnership with Cange, Haiti. In consort with Grace Episcopal, St. John's United Methodist, and Holy Trinity Lutheran churches in Anderson, Holy Trinity has partnered with the community of Bois Joli, Haiti, and has provided funds and other support for a school, community center/church, and water supply. Local outreach efforts include (with live links for more details): Clemson Child Development Center (CCDC), Clemson Community Care (CCC), Clemson Free Clinic, Safe Harbor II MARY'S House, Our Daily Bread, Our Daily Rest, and Family Promise. Our ECW supports many local and regional charities through funds raised at the annual Holy Trinity Bazaar & Artisan Market and St. Paul s Thrift Shop. A ministry that we have recently started at Holy Trinity is Family Promise, where HT is a host congregation 4 times a year for homeless families with children. The success of this program is attributed to the hard work of many HT parishioners with the leadership of HT parishioners, Ann and Brad Russell and Elizabeth Halpin.

5 What is your practice of stewardship and how does it shape the life of your worshipping community? The Stewardship Committee goal this year has been 100% participation in pledges while recognizing that stewardship involves many more aspects than just financial. With Father Nieman s guidance, conflict has been minimized over the past ten years. An example of orderly addressing conflict would be the blessing of same sex relationships and possible same sex marriage at Holy Trinity. Several forums were conducted where information was provided on this topic, opinions heard, and questions answered. While not totally in one accord, the end result was that a large majority of parishioners is ready to move forward and the dissenters felt that their concerns were heard. Consequently, Holy Trinity successfully and appropriately addressed this potential issue of major conflict. What is your experience leading/addressing change in the church? When has it gone well? When has it gone poorly? And what did you learn? Holy Trinity s approach has to attempt full discussions through Sunday school programs, forums, and on Wednesday nights at Trinity Connections where information is provided and people are invited to express their opinions. With patience and perseverance, necessary change has been made. When these approaches have not been successful, it has generally been because of lack of attendance at the forums, particularly by the dissenting parties.
