TREVELYAN COLLEGE SCR Newsletter EASTER TERM 2004
FROM THE SCR PRESIDENT Dear Friends, Thanks to the opening green leaves and the lighter evenings it is difficult to cast one s mind back to the dark days of the Epiphany Term, but we should not forget last term s events and those who made them possible. We can look back with pleasure on George Patterson addressing the Burns Supper haggis in his inimitable fashion, on James Wright proposing the Immortal Memory, and on Ian MacPhee on the highland pipes (not the Northumbrian ones as I had reported in the last Newsletter), piping us out as well as in. Bugsy Malone with its constant scene changes was a tour de force for the stage staff as well as the cast, and Paul Nicoll s excellent talk on Wallington House produced a record attendance. In contrast, there was a lack of interest in the Guest Night, which, in consequence, had to be cancelled. Please let me or other committee members have your feedback on whether it was the timing, the concept or something else which was the problem. The Wallington Sub-Committee continues and following the encouraging discussions after Paul Nicoll s talk it is hoped to arrange a preliminary visit this term. May I remind you of the SCR website maintained by Toby Watson at May I also suggest that you visit the JCR website, for the latest information on other college events and activities. That way we may not be caught unawares next time the JCR appear in fancy dress at dinner! The Easter Term programme follows the usual pattern fitting around exmainations, their preparations and aftermath. It includes two talks: one historical presentation, this time by David Williams on the history of the cinema in Durham, and the second by Dr. Sarah Wootton on the poet Keats and Pre-Raphaelite painting. The Martins are allowing us to hold the now traditional barbeque in their garden on 17 th June, and it is hoped to arrange a gentle, non-compulsory competitive element into that event. Come along to discover what it is Then it will be the last week of term, with the Sir William Luce Lecture on 24 th June, and afterwards time to enjoy what I hope will prove to be a summer of fine weather until we meet again in the Michaelmas Term. With best wishes, Ian Stewart

Art Matters Easter Term Exhibition We have another splendid exhibition lined up for this term. The artist, Jill Roland-Gosselin, British-born but resident in France, comes from a family which has produced many artists. She graduated with a degree in Mathematics and Physics from the University of Exeter but then went on to study art in London and Paris, combining these studies with work in fashion and textile design. She has taught art in schools and to adult students but now devotes all her time to painting. She has travelled extensively across the world and this has opened her eyes to various peoples and cultures. These experiences are portrayed in her work. This exhibition will also contain some images of Durham. Her children include two daughters, one a former and the other a current Trevelyan College student, indeed the present Chair of the College Arts Committee. Jill has held solo shows in France, Kenya, Morocco, Indonesia, London, and now Durham. She hopes to have a really well attended Preview to give her the opportunity to meet us; she is very conscious of the fact that her friends and supporters are mostly on the other side of the Channel. So please, please support this Preview at a.m. on Sunday 2 nd May. The exhibition will continue until 11 th June. If you wish for a pre-preview take a look at Jill s website at This will certainly convince you this show is an experience not to be missed! Julian Trevelyan Award for Fine Art This exhibition, generously sponsored by Mary Fedden, will take place on June 19 th and 20 th and will follow the usual format. Entries are especially welcome from the Senior Common Room. Creativity in any medium of the visual arts is what is sought. Entry forms will be available from the General Office from the end of the first week of term and should be returned by June 11 th. The entries themselves should be brought to the Dowrick Suite on June 18 th. Entries will be on view in the Dowrick Suite during June 19 th and 20 th, closing at 4 p.m. on 20 th. Please come along during this time to record your vote for the piece you consider should win.
Labelling of Permanent Collection This task is now almost complete and is intended to enhance appreciation of our outstanding collection of 20 th -century art. The label holders are quite expensive; printing the labels and positioning them has been time consuming. This is why I find the activities of whoever takes pleasure in reversing the labels in the SCR extremely unfunny. Maybe they would care to explain the joke to me. Muriel Woodward Sir William Luce Fellow This term we look forward to the visit of Dr. John Peterson, an independent historian and political scientist affiliated with the Centre for Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Arizona. In addition to writing, publishing and speaking on areas of professional concern, Dr. Peterson is involved with consulting and writing for such organisations as the National Council on US-Arab Relations, the Foreign Policy Research Institute, and the International Crisis Group. He is contributing editor of the Journal of Oman Studies and is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Gulf Studies. Dr. Peterson will arrive in Durham on Wednesday 28 th April and will be resident in the Guest Suite. The Sir William Luce Lecture will be held on Thursday 24 th June at 2.00 p.m. in the Sir James Knott Hall at Trevelyan College. Congratulations to Alison Carter who passed her PhD viva at the beginning of the Epiphany Term. Well Done!
Thursday 20 th May Keats and the Pre-Raphaelites A talk by Dr. Sarah Wootton Department of English Studies Dr. Wootton s talk will take place in the SCR after dinner. Please make reservations for SCR Formal with Tracey Hall by 2.00 p.m. on the previous day.
The History of the Cinema in Durham On Thursday 6 th May we will be joined at SCR Formal by David Williams, who will give a talk after dinner on the history of Durham cinema. Please come along to welcome David to Trevelyan, and, as always, your guests will be very welcome at this event. SCR Summer Barbeque The annual SCR barbeque will be held on Thursday 17 th June from 6.30 p.m. in the garden of the Principal s House and at this year s event you will have the opportunity to take part in some light-hearted summer games The new JCR exec will be invited to the barbeque, so please come along to welcome them. And please keep your fingers crossed for good weather.
