1 22 April 2014 Preview of the Continuous Municipal Register Statistics at 1 January 2014 Provisional data The population registered in the Continuous Municipal Register decreased by 404,619 persons, standing at 46.7 million persons in the last year The num ber of registered foreign nationals decreases by 545,980 and the num ber of Spaniards increases by 141,361 At 1 January 2014, the total number of residents in Spain registered in the Continuous Register 1 was 46,725,164, according to the preview of the Continuous Municipal Register, indicating a decrease of 404,619 persons, as compared with the data from 1 January Out of this total, 41,724,906 were persons with Spanish nationality and 5,000,258 were foreign nationals, representing 10.7% of the total number registered. The figures published today are a provisional preview. The final figures, once the procedure for obtaining them has been finalised, and on receipt of a favourable report from the Registration Council, shall be submitted to the National Government prior to the end of the year for approval by Royal Decree, which shall be published in the Official Spanish Gazette. During the year 2013, the number of registered Spaniards experienced a net increase of 141,361 persons (0.3%), while the number of registered foreign nationals decreased by 545,980 persons ( 9.8%). Among the latter, those belonging to the EU-28 decreased by 313,446 persons (reaching a total figure of 2,047,532 persons), whereas non-community citizens decreased by 232,534 persons (standing at 2,952,726). 2 Population by sex, place of birth and age 49.1% of the total number of registered persons were male and 50.9% were female. Among the Spaniards, there were more females (51.1%), while among the foreign nationals there were more males (51.2%). In 2013 the first decrease was experienced, as compared with 2012, and this year it experienced a decrease of 404,619 persons, according to the provisional data. During those years that increase was mainly due to the registration of foreign nationals, whose figure stood at 5,747,734 in 2010 from 923,879 in In 2011 and 2012, net registrations of foreign nationals were negative ( 15,229 and - 190,020, respectively). 3 Foreign nationals registered in the Continuous Municipal Register (thousands) Continuous Municipal Register Statistics at 1 January (P) (P): Provisional data Foreign nationals EU-28 non-eu By age, 16% of the population is under 16 years old, 39.4% is between 16 and 44 years old and 44.6% is 45 years old or older. By nationality, it is worth noting the difference in the group of 16 to 44 years old. Thus, whereas those Spaniards registered in these ages represented 37.1% of the total, the percentage rose to 58.4% in the case of the foreign nationals. The highest average ages among the main nationalities were found in the British citizens (52.5 years old), German citizens (48.8) and French citizens (41.9). Conversely, the lowest average ages corresponded to Moroccan citizens (28.6 years of age), Pakistani citizens (29.7) and Chinese citizens (29.8). The most populated Autonomous Communities were again Andalucía, Cataluña, Comunidad de Madrid and Comunitat Valenciana. Comunitat Valenciana ( 118,599 persons), Andalucía (-47,665) and Comunidad de Madrid ( 47,279) registered the greatest reductions of population in absolute terms between 1 January 2013 and 1 January In turn, the slightest decreases of population corresponded to País Vasco ( 2,833 persons), La Rioja ( 3,283) and Cantabria ( 3,320). The Autonomous Communities with the lowest population were again La Rioja, Cantabria and Comunidad Foral de Navarra. In relative terms, the greatest decreases of population were registered in Comunitat Valenciana ( 2.3%), Aragón ( 1.7%) and Castilla-La Mancha ( 1.2%). The Autonomous Communities with the highest proportions of foreign nationals were Illes Balears (18.3%), Región de Murcia (14.7%) and Comunitat Valenciana (14.7%). The Autonomous City of Melilla also registered one of the highest percentages (15.0%). Conversely, those with the lowest proportions of foreign nationals were Extremadura (3.4%), Galicia (3.6%) and Principado de Asturias (4.2%). The Autonomous Communities registering the greatest decreases of foreign nationals, in absolute terms, were Comunitat Valenciana ( 131,366), Comunidad de Madrid ( 83,628), and Cataluña ( 72,496). In turn, the slightest reductions of foreign population during that period corresponded to the Autonomous City of Ceuta ( 132 persons), Principado de Asturias ( 3,384) and Cantabria ( 3,807). In relative terms, the greatest decreases of foreign population were registered in Comunitat Valenciana ( 15,2%), Aragón ( 14.2%) and Comunidad Foral de Navarra ( 12,6%). In the Autonomous City of Melilla the relative increase was 0.7%. Distribution of foreign citizens by nationality The foreign nationals residing in Spain, registered in the Continuous Register and belonging to the EU-28 reached 2,047,532. Among those, the most numerous were the Romanian citizens (795,513), followed by those from the United Kingdom (297,299) and Italy (180,643). Among the group of non-european-union foreign nationals, Moroccan citizens were the most numerous (771,427), followed by Ecuadorians (218,189) and Chinese ones (185,250). 8 In relative terms, among the nationalities with the highest number of registered persons, the greatest decreases were recorded among citizens from Germany ( 23.6%), United Kingdom ( 22.8%) and Colombia ( 18.6%). In turn, the only increase was recorded among the citizens from China (2.0%). By group of countries, the EU-28 citizens were the most numerous, representing 41.0% of the total foreign citizens, followed by citizens from Africa, who accounted for 21.4% of the total foreign nationals. 9 Data of municipalities by size Among the 8,117 Spanish municipalities, 4,923 had a population lower than 1,000. The Autonomous Communities with the greatest number of municipalities with less than 1,000 were Castilla y León (with 1,991 municipalities), Castilla-La Mancha (633) and Aragón (618). Conversely, the Autonomous Communities with the lowest number of municipalities with less than 1,000 were Canarias (one municipality), Región de Murcia (three) and Illes Balears (six). Regarding the municipalities with a bigger size, 61 municipalities with more than were registered in Spain. Among them, 12 belonged to Andalucía, 10 to Cataluña and 10 to Comunidad de Madrid. By Autonomous Community, the greatest percentages were registered in Comunidad de Madrid (72.2%) and Aragón (50.3%). The lowest percentages corresponded to Castilla-La Mancha (8.3%) and Extremadura (13.7%). In turn, 20.9% of the population resided in municipalities smaller than 10,000. By Autonomous Community, the highest percentages corresponded to Extremadura (50.6%) and Comunidad Foral de Navarra (45.5%), whereas the lowest ones corresponded to Región de Murcia (4.5%) and Comunidad de Madrid (5.8%).
