6 Information for Students Will undertaking a VET Course affect my chances of going to University or TAFE? TAFE SA and other RTO s offer students a variety of entry pathways into courses. They currently recognise the SACE as one of the entry requirements. Students should speak to their VET Coordinator for details on how VET courses can contribute to an Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR). For further information regarding the entry pathways and requirements for University and TAFE SA, please visit the South Australian Tertiary Advisory Centre (SATAC) website Will undertaking a VET Course affect my other school work/subjects? The commitment required from students for each VET course varies. We strongly recommend that you consider the following BEFORE choosing a VET course: > What amount of instruction and out of classroom time is required? > Where the course is run? > What day and time the course is running? > What is the length of the course is it a term, semester or a full year? > Will I need to catch up on any school work that is missed when at my course? How do I apply for a VET Course through VETnetwork Australia Training Services? Visit our website now If a course is of interest, contact our office (all our contact details are on our website) and speak to one of the team. You can also download an enrolment form and detailed course outline BUT remember to consult your School VET Coordinator as well. Student enrolments for VET courses open Friday 5th September, 2014 How much will it cost? Course fees vary approximate prices have been listed on our website. Please note that the fees listed are subject to change at any time and without prior notification by the listed RTO. Refer to our website for course fees What are Australian School-Based Apprenticeships (ASBA S?) An Australian School-based Apprenticeship (ASBA) involves the employment of a young person who is undertaking a traineeship part-time while still attending school and enrolled in a program leading to a senior secondary certificate. Students are required to complete a minimum of eight hours of paid employment per week in addition to their school and vocational studies. These hours may be completed in a block and/or day release and may also include working on weekends and/or school holidays. The school supports the student by arranging a flexible timetable where the ASBA is made part of (not additional) their studies. The school can also assist the student in managing the combination of employment, vocational training and school subjects. Students benefit by using their apprenticeship as an integral part of their school curriculum with an added incentive to stay at school and achieve their SACE. For further information please consult your school VET Coordinator. 4 Disclaimer: at the time of printing, the information contained above was deemed true and accurate. In all circumstances, we would encourage parents and students to confirm all course / program eligibility and enrolment requirements with VETnetwork Australia Training Services or any other provider, with their school VET Coordinator.

7 What is Vocational Education and Training (VET)? Vocational Education and Training (VET) refers to qualifications, short courses and training programs that provide students with the skills and knowledge required to meet workplace or industry standards. VET courses are usually more practically focused rather than theoretical although in some industry areas, these standards are high and require high level thinking, analytical and technical skills. VET qualifications are often delivered by TAFE SA (in South Australia) and/or other private Registered Training Organisations (RTO s). What are VET courses? Most secondary schools have a VET Coordinator (who may also be known as a Career Adviser or SACE Coordinator) - VET Coordinators are able to assist students and parents with any questions relating to VET courses. These courses are divided into three categories: > VETnetwork Australia Training Services VET Courses - these courses are available to students from all schools across Adelaide CBD (and South Australia) and are advertised throughout this booklet. You can also visit our website for more detailed VET course information. > School VET programs these programs are advertised throughout the school s curriculum handbook and may only be available for students that are enrolled in that school. > Other VET courses these are offered through other training organisations and require students to enrol directly. For further information please speak to your school VET coordinator. How will completing a VET course contribute to the SACE? VET courses are recognised within the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE). For specific information, please consult your school VET/SACE Coordinator and/or visit the SACE website For specific information on VET recognition in the SACE refer to the SACE website What is the Training Guarantee for SACE Students (TGSS)? The Training Guarantee for SACE Students (TGSS) is a South Australian Government policy initiative for students who know they want to start a planned vocational pathway. Students enrol in a VET qualification while they are at school and continue it after they leave. Students must be on a VET pathway. For specific information, please consult your VET/SACE Coordinator and confirm your student s eligibility. Furthermore, visits the Skills for All website What is the difference between work experience & Structured (SWP)? Work experience provides students with a general taste of a workplace or industry. Students observe different aspects of the work carried out within the business and assist with tasks nominated by their supervisor or employer. SWP enables students to gain specific skills whilst on-the-job. The school, training provider and employer agree on these skills or competencies prior to the commencement of the students placement. These skills reflect nationally recognised and industry defined competency standards, which have been developed by Industry Training Bodies. SWP requires students to complete industry placement relating to their area of study in addition to their training within the classroom. This may be completed as a block release (one or two weeks each term) or even school holidays. Note: in some VET courses, SWP is mandatory for successful completion.
